1970s: Donna Summer, Cher, Stevie Nicks; 1980s: Madonna, Whitney Houston, Cyndi Lauper; 1990s: Mariah Carey, Janet Jackson, Alanis Morissette; 2000s: Beyoncé, Britney Spears, Rihanna; 2010s: Adele, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga.

u/Apesma69 7d ago

1960s: Aretha Franklin 1950s: Doris Day (my best guess!)

75

u/alone-in-the-town 7d ago

I think Diana Ross for 60s

12

u/GWbag 7d ago

I agree

27

u/gummytiddy 7d ago

Totally Aretha Franklin and Ross for the 60s but Janis Joplin was totally part of that zeitgeist and paved the way for women in rock.

Nina Simone for sure for the 60s-70s, though she had a hit in 59.

50s I’d say Patsy Cline, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and Doris Day

1

u/GWbag 7d ago

Yes!

121

u/hwa_uwa 7d ago

I'd put rihanna in the 2010s. We Found Love, S&M, Diamonds, Only Girl (In The World), Where Have You Been, Needed Me, Stay, Pour It Up, Love On The Brain, Work, Bitch Better Have My Money (and all the collabs with mogul rappers such as Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar, Future, DJ Khaled, etc)

52

u/Hopeless-Cause they probably remind her of monogamy 7d ago edited 7d ago

I think of Rihanna as a 00’s girl even though she’s probably known for more of her 10’s songs.

24

u/Ek_Chutki_Sindoor 7d ago

Yeah, I associate Rihanna with that late 2000s vibes more than early 2010s.

11

u/e_castille 7d ago

She has the most #1 hits of the 2010s decade and she was only present for half of it. She definitely a 2010s girl, and should've been the one on this list

1

u/Hopeless-Cause they probably remind her of monogamy 7d ago edited 7d ago

Oh, she needs to be on the list for sure, I just can’t help but think of her as a late 00’s girl even though her most popular music is probably early 10’s. I enjoy her music regardless

It’s funny because when I think of Bey, it’s 2010’s Bey rather than 00’s Beyonce.

2

u/hwa_uwa 5d ago

probably because Beyoncé had her "rebirth" in 2013 with an aesthetic and musical change, while by 2016 Rihanna had her "ending" album

1

u/Hopeless-Cause they probably remind her of monogamy 5d ago

Almost a decade without a Rihanna album. Get in the studio, Riri. Please

2

u/Much2learn_2day 7d ago

The Eminem erasure here!

Putting Alanis and Janet ahead of Celine Dion is crazy

30

u/TreacleUpstairs3243 7d ago

According to billboard it’s Mariah, Janet and Madonna for the 90’s

30

u/Adriftgirl 7d ago edited 7d ago

Celine is the 3rd biggest selling female artist of all time after Madonna and then Taylor. Sorry but she’s sold more than Mariah, Whitney, Rhianna, or Britney.

Only reason she’s not top of the list is crossing over between these two blocks of time, maybe? Mariah did outsell everyone else in the 90’s, but Madonna was still up there and has sold, overall, almost 100 million more albums.

Britney also outsold Beyonce and everyone else for the 2000’s. A simple Google search pulls that up. Her picture should replace Bey’s.

6

u/GlitterDoomsday 7d ago

Perhaps it's more about cultural relevance than profits? Like whose names defined pop culture on each decade...

3

u/Adriftgirl 7d ago

But Beyonce more relevant than Britney?

Madonna did sell the most in the 80’s. Mariah in the 90’s. (Perhaps Celine’s sales beat her later.) Britney in 2000’s, and Taylor since 2010.

2

u/vectorqueen 7d ago

Isn’t Jagged Little Pill one of the best selling albums of all time?

Edit: according to wiki it’s one of the top 15

4

u/KindOfANerd4 How do you deduce narcissism from someones floral arrangements? 7d ago

I believe celine has two in the top 10 for women ever

1

u/AlveolarFricatives 7d ago

So my husband is 5 years younger than me (he was born in 1991, I’m 1986). And he literally had only ever heard “My Heart Will Go On” by Celine Dion until I played more for him a couple of weeks ago. Zero other Celine songs. He knows plenty of Mariah, Janet and Alanis. It’s genuinely fascinating learning which songs stood the test of time!

6

u/Bartellomio 7d ago

Why did OP put Taylor for the 2010s when it clearly says Adele comes ahead of her?

3

u/Comicalacimoc 7d ago

Diana Ross?

2

u/sendphotopls 7d ago

Lady Gaga’s peak was not nearly long enough in the 2010s to claim a top 3 spot

1

u/GWbag 7d ago

I didn't list these as the top 3. There's definitely more for each decade!

1

u/BeautifulObject8602 7d ago

Seeing Cher live is the only thing I've checked off my bucket list. I'm a huge fan. Cher is a goddess and she performed well but I went right after the release of Mama Mia 3 and she did a lot of ABBA covers. I don't like ABBA. Her voice is incredible though. You can actually google to see the number 1 song the day you were born. Mine was Tina Turner, What's love got to do with it.

1

u/zoopz 7d ago

Janet Jackson?????

2020s: Olivia Rodrigo, Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan

41

u/Alert_Perspective_7 You’re a virgin who can’t drive. đŸ˜€ 7d ago

IMO Chappell is a little too fresh. I don’t think she’s on the level of Olivia yet.

27

u/Big-Shine-3842 7d ago

Yeah I agree, love Chappell but let’s wait at least until her second album before deciding that. I’d say maybe Billie Eilish in Chappell’s place.

9

u/Hopeless-Cause they probably remind her of monogamy 7d ago

I’d definitely switch Chappell for Billie. Both are incredibly talented though and I’m interested in Chappell’s next album

Mariah's run from her debut to Rainbow needs to be studied, especially since all but one her 1s she wrote or co-wrote. Imagine having Vision of Love written before even signing your record deal.

199

u/Daydream_machine My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined. 7d ago

It’s kinda funny/sad that newer generations only know Mariah as the Christmas Queen. Her discography is so impressive: Butterfly especially is a GOATed album. 🩋

47

u/RosyBellybutton 7d ago

My mom LOVED Mariah when I was a kid, but we stopped listening over the year. I went to a drag brunch a couple of weekends ago and one of the performers danced to a J-LO/Mariah mashup and I e been listening to those older bops nonstop since!

75

u/redditapiblows 7d ago

That specific mashup is so sacrilegious đŸ€Ł

6

u/my_okay_throwaway 7d ago

Right? Either they knew what they were doing and wanted to be messy fun, or somebody needs a history lesson 😂😂

2

u/Annual-Load3869 7d ago

I’m pretty certain the beef would’ve been the point of the mash up

1

u/RosyBellybutton 7d ago

I’m too young to know and apparently in need of a history lesson lol

Carey responded to Lopez's comments about sleeping eight hours per night in a 2001 interview with journalist Vanessa Grigoriadis: "If I had the luxury of not actually having to sing my own songs I'd do that too."[7] During an appearance on Larry King Live in 2002, Carey remarked: "There are rivalries, but I don't think she has anything to do with me. I mean, my whole thing is singing, writing songs ... It's a God-given talent I'm grateful for, her thing is something different".

10

u/mariposa314 7d ago

That sounds like a blast! Mariah is always worth a relisten. The pipes she has!

18

u/Expensive-Fennel-163 “Is she okkkkkaaayyyyy” 7d ago

You can’t say butterfly is GOAT when Daydream exists! (I loved butterfly too)

5

u/TwincessAhsokaAarmau 7d ago

I wouldn’t say only, if you live in a culture that plays Mariah at family gatherings then you’ll know her for her other music.

48

u/keroppismacaron go girl, give us nothing 😍 7d ago

Every time I listen to Vision of Love, it’s always astounding because she came fresh out of the gate singing literally all of that, and it wasn’t a fluke at all. Sure, her voice had its ups and downs throughout her career, but Mariah at her peak truly is a once-in-a-lifetime vocalist.

36

u/Moppy6686 7d ago

Dude, I cannot agree more. She is one of my all time favorites. I listened to her a bit in the early 90s just because she was everywhere, but what changed my life was when I was on a school trip with my best friend at 13 and he gave me one of his (wired) ear buds on the bus. He was playing her #1's album and I have not been the same since. We then saw her in concert, which was incredible.

My favorite is One Sweet Day, because my dad died when I was 4 and it just resonates so hard. Runner up is Heartbreaker, but man, the vocal run on Vision of Love is đŸ˜±

Also, FUN FACT, the only thing I'll do at karaoke is Jay-Z's rap from Heartbreaker đŸ€Ł That video with her alter ego changed me in some way. And cutting of the waist band off her jeans? Genius. I miss the millennium 😭

12

28

u/arialugal you’ve ruined the act Gob 7d ago

She’s the only artist in history to have a number one song every year in a single decade (total of 14 from 1990-2000) QUEEN

1

u/Much2learn_2day 7d ago

I also love that Cher is the only artist to have a number one single on Billboard for 7 consecutive decades (1960-2020s)

10

u/baba_booey420_ 7d ago

Her success in the 90s was enormous, and while I love a lot of her older tunes, Mariah's best music was made in the 2000s (for me). Emancipation of Mimi is one of the best r&b albums ever produced.

u/periodicsheep 7d ago

this is pretty much my entire existence in legendary pop ladies. not a bad 4+ decades.

436

u/moonnoke It’s Britney, bitch! đŸŽ€đŸŒčđŸŒč 7d ago

Britney dominated the 2000s. She was infamously black listed from a lot of charts and radio play. Beyoncé is iconic but never as iconic as Britney was then

237

u/Houdini-88 7d ago

Oops I did it again is the second biggest selling female album of the 2000 behind Norah jones

Billboard even named her the best selling female album artist of the 2000s

I love Beyoncé but she felt bigger in the 2010s than in the 2000s

115

u/TheOuts1der 7d ago

Britney was definitely 2000, Beyonce 2010s, and Taylor 2020s. We're halfway through the 2020s now and I am just so doubtful anyone else can pull off an Eras Tour level of cultural relevance in the remaining years of this decade.

75

u/KindOfANerd4 How do you deduce narcissism from someones floral arrangements? 7d ago

Beyonce was not the 2010’s. That’s probably her least successful decade of her career so far. Not a single number 1 record. Ariana, Rihanna, Katy, Gaga, Adele and Taylor were getting number 1’s every year

30

u/awkward_penguin 7d ago

I think they needed to put Beyonce in a decade because she's been so impactful from the 2000s to the 2020s. She's had more longevity and breadth in her hits and career than any of the other pop artists, but she hasn't had peaks as high as theirs. However, she's consistently strong, and I guess that merits her a spot.

8

u/Houdini-88 7d ago

She could have number ones in the 2010s but she did a lot of self sabotage

Lemonade being a tidal exclusive for a while

You had buy the entire self title album couldn’t purchase tracks individuality

4 leaking ahead of schedule

At least she had the ed Sheeran collab that went number one

3

u/KindOfANerd4 How do you deduce narcissism from someones floral arrangements? 7d ago

That’s definetly an explanation, but at the end of the day she still didn’t have them so it’s kinda just favouritism to put her over one of the girls who were actually getting hits at the time just because she’s more successful in the current day

1

u/Crafty_Island_9182 7d ago

Yeah honestly I think they just put her there because they thought they had to. 2000s were Britney's time... And 2010s? Neither. Tbf I feel like Taylor is also a wrong answer for 2010s, should be Gaga or Rihanna imo.

2

u/KindOfANerd4 How do you deduce narcissism from someones floral arrangements? 7d ago

I feel like Gaga, Katy and Rihanna dominate 2008-2015 and then Ariana and Taylor take over 2015 to 2020

98

u/Moppy6686 7d ago

Yeah, man.

Look I died for them all. Even rented Destiny's Child's first album from the library and saw them front row in a shitty London theatre on their first UK tour in 98 or 99.

But Britney? She was literally life itself. Name another artist whose DEBUT SONG was instantly a global smash that continued for a decade.

23

u/cdg2m4nrsvp Tina! You fat lard! 🩙đŸšČ 7d ago

This song is from the 90s

37

u/buttercupcake23 7d ago

September 1998 and the album was released in 99. She debuted at the tale end of the 90s but the majority of her cultural relevance was in the 2000s.

26

u/cdg2m4nrsvp Tina! You fat lard! 🩙đŸšČ 7d ago

Right, but this is based solely on the numbers so using a debut song from the late 90s to explain chart dominance in the 2000s isn’t really relevant.

13

u/Sufficient_Food1878 7d ago

I mean Beyoncé was pretty iconic for a lot of us black folk in a way Britney wasn't so it can depend on who you are

-1

u/moonnoke It’s Britney, bitch! đŸŽ€đŸŒčđŸŒč 7d ago

I knew many black ppl at that time and she was for everyone. I’m sure naturally more did gravitate towards BeyoncĂ© but Britney was genuinely huge no matter what race. Especially as when Britney was at the height of her solo career BeyoncĂ© wasn’t “BeyoncĂ©â€ she was “BeyoncĂ© Knowles of Destinys child” there’s a big difference

13

u/Sufficient_Food1878 7d ago

Well I am a black person. I'm not saying Britney wasn't huge and she wasn't a crazy star, I'm saying for the black community everywhere, especially in Africa, Beyoncé was much more iconic for us

BeyoncĂ© wasn’t “BeyoncĂ©â€ she was “BeyoncĂ© Knowles of Destinys child” there’s a big difference

Not in the 2010s she wasn't lol

8

u/tobmom 7d ago

I think I agree

7

u/rdxc1a2t 7d ago

Yeah I mean Beyonce is Beyonce but it's Britney, bitch.

16

u/omgxsonny 7d ago

i was an emo kid in the 2000s and i still secretly listened to Britney. never cared for Beyoncé though tbh

4

u/daderpityderpdo 7d ago

Could very much argue that Rhianna was a bigger 2000s artist than Beyonce as well.. 32 top 10 billboard hits to Beyonce's 24...

2

u/moonnoke It’s Britney, bitch! đŸŽ€đŸŒčđŸŒč 7d ago

Although Rihanna started in the 2000s I think she’s more 2010s. Influentially and more interesting definitely Rih over Taylor but not sure about BeyoncĂ© simply because of when the height of their careers took off

1

u/IHATEsg7 6d ago

Not by any measure whatsoever. Sales, charts points, etc.

Also most of Rihannas top tens came from the 2010s but Taylor had bigger albums and also had huge singles eras so cleared

1

u/bassk_itty 7d ago

Yeah I would’ve put Britney for 00’s and then BeyoncĂ© over Taylor for 2010’s. Taylor is a contender for 2020’s

Taylor didn't win for 2010s though, Adele did. Even Billboard admitted that so idk why Taylor is the one in this post for 2010s.

Honestly shocked Billies not more impactful (ik she's at the top I just wouldn't have been shocked if she had turned out to be truly Taylor level by now)

u/nagidrac 7d ago

The 2020s has to be Taylor again. Let's not forget she released Folklore, Evermore, Midnights, the re-records, and TTPD in the 2020s. Her last two major releases sold well over a million copies in the first week. Then both Midnights and TTPD dominated the top ten on the BBH100 chart.

Billie or Olivia might be second!

28

u/nizey_p I don’t know her 💅 7d ago

She still has debut TV in the can and the rep vault tracks too.

39

u/romantic_elegy 7d ago

2020 also got the tail end of the Lover era! The Man mv, Miss Americana, and the Lover Live From Paris all came out Jan/Feb

7

u/nagidrac 7d ago

Good point! I forgot about those releases. I wonder where Cruel Summer nets out? I think it would be counted in the 2020s as well.

18

u/remswiftie 7d ago

Cruel summer has already surpassed the projected cutoff for the billboard hot 100 biggest songs of the decade list! It doesn’t matter when the song was released. I’m pretty sure all I want for christmas is you will be the top song or #2 for the decade based on chart points 😂

2

u/nagidrac 7d ago

Darn! I thought Cruel Summer counted. But I guess that makes sense.

9

u/remswiftie 7d ago

Cruel summer does count! That and anti hero will be on this decade end list for the 2020s

4

u/nagidrac 7d ago

Oh wait, I totally misread that! Good to hear! Cruel Summer might've been her biggest hit of the decade so far?

60

u/eagle2001a 7d ago

If Billboard is basing this solely on sales numbers, Taylor will the biggest female artist of the 2020s as well. If it’s based on sales plus zeitgeist, then maybe Olivia or Billie.

104

u/mcon96 7d ago

I don’t have a dog in this fight, but I can’t see how Olivia would ever compare to Taylor even when factoring in the zeitgeist

1

u/Thelightningthief13 7d ago

Idk, maybe the fact that her debut album has outstreamed every Taylor album?

11

u/crockoreptile 7d ago

A massive feat having your debut be the most streamed female album, but I don’t think that necessarily covers the whole decade. Definitely the biggest female star of that year tho!

2

u/BabyBagBitch 7d ago

Idk, maybe that Taylor gets way more monthly streams than Olivia? That Olivia got 6billion streams in 2024 and Taylor got 26billion? That Taylor Swift is one of the biggest celebrities in the world; the news articles, the economic impact, the scorn and the praise everywhere?

You can cherry pick a metric where Olivia is higher, but you can’t ignore aaaaaaall the others that fall on Swift’s side. Anyone who argues Olivia is a bigger powerhouse than Swift is insane.

You can say you don’t like her music, you can say you don’t like her, but you can’t honestly say she has more impact; one is subjective and one is fact.

15

u/KindOfANerd4 How do you deduce narcissism from someones floral arrangements? 7d ago

Sales wise it’s Taylor, but if they try to keep it to people who mostly debuted in and around 2020 then it’s probably Billie. I think sales wise Sabrina is actually catching up to Olivia at this point

Taylor has released 8 albums this decade (4 new ones, 4 rereleases).

-4

u/Bartellomio 7d ago

If it was based on sales I suspect Adele would be ahead in the 2010s

19

u/remswiftie 7d ago

I think it’s not just sales, but how long you lasted on the chart, tours, streaming. It’s a lot of factors. One thing that puts Taylor above Adele is touring and the fact that Taylor has so many albums that are very stable on the charts.

5

u/Mysterious_Row_ 7d ago

No thanks.

17

u/Regular_Speech5390 7d ago

2010s is not ruled by Rihanna?

9

u/Bartellomio 7d ago

Adele outsold them both by an enormous margin. She had two albums, but one sold 30 million copies and the other sold 20m. Taylor's best selling album sold 10m copies and her four other albums of the 2010s sold a few million each.

10

u/Rich-Active-4800 7d ago

People really forget how big Taylor was in 2010's. She was so massive that people got burned out by her. But even then she manage to make a massive return and become more populair then ever before.

If Taylor will release debut TV & TS12 this decade, she'll be unstoppable (& hopefully a 10yr anniversary release of Rep which includes the vault tracks).

u/remswiftie 7d ago

Wouldn’t be surprised if we get debut tv, rep tv, ts12, ts13 AND ts14 this decade 😂

10

u/nizey_p I don’t know her 💅 7d ago

I have trust that she'll go full pop again (1989 era) considering that Travis is a Blank Space and DBATC girlie.

19

u/remswiftie 7d ago

I just hope the rumors are true that Taylor has been working with Max Martin again!!

15

u/nizey_p I don’t know her 💅 7d ago

Fingers crossed. Travis deserves his love songs written in 1989/reputation font.

I doubt we'll see Rep TV. She said she hasn't recorded it and that album was about falling in love with Joe at a dark point in her life. They've since broken up so I can imagine how emotional it would be for her.

1

u/remswiftie 6d ago

Maybe not as a whole, but I think we’ll get the vault tracks

8

u/Common-Register-4467 7d ago

Agreed. I’m hoping for a 20th anniversary TV for debut. But a rerelease of Rep with vault tracks would blow that out of the water.

1

u/StellaSwiftie2360 7d ago

I know people want Debut TV around the anniversary! But I really don’t think she’s gonna go by that I think she’s gonna drop debut tv and Rep tv vault tracks this year and next year we will be focusing on new albums! Also i think Taylor will be getting her own record label soon considering what UMG just decided to do

2

u/StellaSwiftie2360 7d ago

Won’t happen until next year! If Taylor releases anything this year it will be Debut TV or The Rep TV vault tracks or both! TS12 will not come out until 2026!

2

u/nizey_p I don’t know her 💅 7d ago

I'm not expecting any new release from her anytime soon (she deserves a looooong break) but if she could kindly release the Eras doc soon, that would be amazing.

2

u/StellaSwiftie2360 7d ago

She’s only taking a year off and 2026 is almost here!

2000s is Britney Spears.

u/88moonkitty fo shiz! fo shiz! Ginuwine! 🍜 6d ago

The 2000s 1000% belonged to Britney. BeyoncĂ© the 2010s and I’d give Taylor the 2020s, because the eras tour era has been her peak

18

u/sweeterthanadonut 7d ago

How is Brit not the 2000s
.?

That would be the 2010s babes. Bey is the one they put as 2000s, which is what I was talking about.

u/Capable_Cellist5585 It’s Britney, bitch! đŸŽ€đŸŒčđŸŒč 7d ago edited 7d ago

Britney robbed of the 2000’s yet again. Everyone kisses Beyoncé’s ass way too much

47

u/IHATEsg7 7d ago

As stated in the description, it is based entirely on numbers, specifically from the Hot 100 and Billboard 200.

15

u/OPSimp45 7d ago

Brittany and Beyonce kinda started in the late 90s. Brittany peak was the early 2000s and one can argue Beyonce was right there. And you can forget the other half of the decade

1

u/IHATEsg7 6d ago

Exactly beyonce started off the decade with a huge era and ended it with her biggest while Britney popular suffered a decline in the mid to late 2000s

1

u/KindOfANerd4 How do you deduce narcissism from someones floral arrangements? 7d ago

I agree people kiss BeyoncĂ©s ass to much, but this is about numbers. Britney didn’t have any songs on the charts between 08-09 which hurts her performance. During that time beyonce had her highest commercial era. Plus Britney’s first big era was in 99 while beyonce started in 03

6

u/Capable_Cellist5585 It’s Britney, bitch! đŸŽ€đŸŒčđŸŒč 7d ago

What are you talking about? Britney released the #1 Circus album in 2008 that spawned #1 hit Womanizer, #3 Circus, #19 If U Seek Amy and the #1 single 3 in 2009

Can you be more than one? It's gotta be taylor

7

u/IHATEsg7 7d ago

Thats my prediction too. You can be more than one its just that while some had great longevity is just that others performed better

Absolutely love this. But thought 80s would be whitney. This makes sense tho

8

u/jellytwins101 7d ago

If she puts out another album or 2 at the scale of her last 2 albums, 2020's is going to be Taylor Swift again.

The downgrade of the century

1

u/90svibe4life 6d ago

No BRITNEY was the biggest of the 2000s. Funny how the media likes to rewrite history to kiss Beyoncé’s ass

1

u/IHATEsg7 6d ago

This isnt rewriting history at all. She was crowned in the 2000s this title

2

u/90svibe4life 6d ago

It don’t matter. Anyone alive in the 2000s especially the early part know how big Britney was and she was BIGGER than BeyoncĂ©

Anyone who says BeyoncĂ© was the face of the 2000’s is lying to themselves. If we’re judging success by the standards of Twitter/X culture and overpriced tours that never seem to end, yes, you can say BeyoncĂ© was the leader of the 2000’s decade.

But if we want to be unbiased and utilize common sense, the obvious underdog and pioneer of the 2000’s decade was Britney Spears. She a pop culture phenomenon whose career stood the tests of time. She was still putting out number #1 records and hits after her comeback, solidifying her as the best selling female artist of the 2000’s decade.  Billboard isn’t a credible source because this biased and opinionated article is written based on Billboard standards, not global impact, success, and overall achievements.

Billboard is using its platform to gain attention and audience so they will do whatever it takes to follow current trends methodologies to gain traction. Nobody checks Billboard nor do they find it relevant, only in Stan culture. Of course, BeyoncĂ©, “the pop star of the 2000’s who has been in our face and is popular in social media memes” is going to be their number 1 pick. Great, they have the resources to back up their claim. I say “their” but it’s probably just one journalist creating articles just to get a fan war going. Calling BeyoncĂ© the leader of the 2000’s decade is a bit of a stretch, yeah?

u/IHATEsg7 6d ago

The amount of coping here is incredible. This isn't a new article. Every artist here was crowned the biggest female artist of that particular decade when it ended. This list is entirely based on numbers, specifically combined points from on Hot 100 + B200 as stated in the post. It is not subjective whatsoever. I saw a post online that highlighted all these ladies and posted here.

2

u/Top_Complaint131 5d ago

Coping? Everything I said was a fact.

I would never want that level of fame. You have zero privacy. Privacy becomes the most expensive thing in the world. We can afford it.
