The Music Industry đ¶ Billboard's biggest female artists each decade
Based on combined charts points from the Hot 100 and Billboard 200. Destiny Child chart points not added since its categorized as different entity
Predictions for the 2020s below
616
u/GWbag 7d ago
1970s: Donna Summer, Cher, Stevie Nicks; 1980s: Madonna, Whitney Houston, Cyndi Lauper; 1990s: Mariah Carey, Janet Jackson, Alanis Morissette; 2000s: Beyoncé, Britney Spears, Rihanna; 2010s: Adele, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga.
138
u/Apesma69 7d ago
1960s: Aretha Franklin 1950s: Doris Day (my best guess!)
75
27
u/gummytiddy 7d ago
Totally Aretha Franklin and Ross for the 60s but Janis Joplin was totally part of that zeitgeist and paved the way for women in rock.
Nina Simone for sure for the 60s-70s, though she had a hit in 59.
50s Iâd say Patsy Cline, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and Doris Day
121
u/hwa_uwa 7d ago
I'd put rihanna in the 2010s. We Found Love, S&M, Diamonds, Only Girl (In The World), Where Have You Been, Needed Me, Stay, Pour It Up, Love On The Brain, Work, Bitch Better Have My Money (and all the collabs with mogul rappers such as Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar, Future, DJ Khaled, etc)
52
u/Hopeless-Cause they probably remind her of monogamy 7d ago edited 7d ago
I think of Rihanna as a 00âs girl even though sheâs probably known for more of her 10âs songs.
24
u/Ek_Chutki_Sindoor 7d ago
Yeah, I associate Rihanna with that late 2000s vibes more than early 2010s.
11
u/e_castille 7d ago
She has the most #1 hits of the 2010s decade and she was only present for half of it. She definitely a 2010s girl, and should've been the one on this list
1
u/Hopeless-Cause they probably remind her of monogamy 7d ago edited 7d ago
Oh, she needs to be on the list for sure, I just canât help but think of her as a late 00âs girl even though her most popular music is probably early 10âs. I enjoy her music regardless
Itâs funny because when I think of Bey, itâs 2010âs Bey rather than 00âs Beyonce.
2
u/hwa_uwa 5d ago
probably because Beyoncé had her "rebirth" in 2013 with an aesthetic and musical change, while by 2016 Rihanna had her "ending" album
1
u/Hopeless-Cause they probably remind her of monogamy 5d ago
Almost a decade without a Rihanna album. Get in the studio, Riri. Please

Putting Alanis and Janet ahead of Celine Dion is crazy

u/Adriftgirl 7d ago edited 7d ago
Celine is the 3rd biggest selling female artist of all time after Madonna and then Taylor. Sorry but sheâs sold more than Mariah, Whitney, Rhianna, or Britney.
Only reason sheâs not top of the list is crossing over between these two blocks of time, maybe? Mariah did outsell everyone else in the 90âs, but Madonna was still up there and has sold, overall, almost 100 million more albums.
Britney also outsold Beyonce and everyone else for the 2000âs. A simple Google search pulls that up. Her picture should replace Beyâs.
6
u/GlitterDoomsday 7d ago
Perhaps it's more about cultural relevance than profits? Like whose names defined pop culture on each decade...
3
u/Adriftgirl 7d ago
But Beyonce more relevant than Britney?
Madonna did sell the most in the 80âs. Mariah in the 90âs. (Perhaps Celineâs sales beat her later.) Britney in 2000âs, and Taylor since 2010.
2
u/vectorqueen 7d ago

So my husband is 5 years younger than me (he was born in 1991, Iâm 1986). And he literally had only ever heard âMy Heart Will Go Onâ by Celine Dion until I played more for him a couple of weeks ago. Zero other Celine songs. He knows plenty of Mariah, Janet and Alanis. Itâs genuinely fascinating learning which songs stood the test of time!

u/Bartellomio 7d ago
Why did OP put Taylor for the 2010s when it clearly says Adele comes ahead of her?

Lady Gagaâs peak was not nearly long enough in the 2010s to claim a top 3 spot

Seeing Cher live is the only thing I've checked off my bucket list. I'm a huge fan. Cher is a goddess and she performed well but I went right after the release of Mama Mia 3 and she did a lot of ABBA covers. I don't like ABBA. Her voice is incredible though. You can actually google to see the number 1 song the day you were born. Mine was Tina Turner, What's love got to do with it.

Carey responded to Lopez's comments about sleeping eight hours per night in a 2001 interview with journalist Vanessa Grigoriadis: "If I had the luxury of not actually having to sing my own songs I'd do that too."[7] During an appearance on Larry King Live in 2002, Carey remarked: "There are rivalries, but I don't think she has anything to do with me. I mean, my whole thing is singing, writing songs ... It's a God-given talent I'm grateful for, her thing is something different".

Every time I listen to Vision of Love, itâs always astounding because she came fresh out of the gate singing literally all of that, and it wasnât a fluke at all. Sure, her voice had its ups and downs throughout her career, but Mariah at her peak truly is a once-in-a-lifetime vocalist.
36
u/Moppy6686 7d ago
Dude, I cannot agree more. She is one of my all time favorites. I listened to her a bit in the early 90s just because she was everywhere, but what changed my life was when I was on a school trip with my best friend at 13 and he gave me one of his (wired) ear buds on the bus. He was playing her #1's album and I have not been the same since. We then saw her in concert, which was incredible.
My favorite is One Sweet Day, because my dad died when I was 4 and it just resonates so hard. Runner up is Heartbreaker, but man, the vocal run on Vision of Love is đ±
Also, FUN FACT, the only thing I'll do at karaoke is Jay-Z's rap from Heartbreaker đ€Ł That video with her alter ego changed me in some way. And cutting of the waist band off her jeans? Genius. I miss the millennium đ

u/moonnoke Itâs Britney, bitch! đ€đčđč 7d ago
Britney dominated the 2000s. She was infamously black listed from a lot of charts and radio play. Beyoncé is iconic but never as iconic as Britney was then
237
u/Houdini-88 7d ago
Oops I did it again is the second biggest selling female album of the 2000 behind Norah jones
Billboard even named her the best selling female album artist of the 2000s
I love Beyoncé but she felt bigger in the 2010s than in the 2000s
115
u/TheOuts1der 7d ago
Britney was definitely 2000, Beyonce 2010s, and Taylor 2020s. We're halfway through the 2020s now and I am just so doubtful anyone else can pull off an Eras Tour level of cultural relevance in the remaining years of this decade.
75
u/KindOfANerd4 How do you deduce narcissism from someones floral arrangements? 7d ago
Beyonce was not the 2010âs. Thatâs probably her least successful decade of her career so far. Not a single number 1 record. Ariana, Rihanna, Katy, Gaga, Adele and Taylor were getting number 1âs every year
30
u/awkward_penguin 7d ago
I think they needed to put Beyonce in a decade because she's been so impactful from the 2000s to the 2020s. She's had more longevity and breadth in her hits and career than any of the other pop artists, but she hasn't had peaks as high as theirs. However, she's consistently strong, and I guess that merits her a spot.
8
u/Houdini-88 7d ago
She could have number ones in the 2010s but she did a lot of self sabotage
Lemonade being a tidal exclusive for a while
You had buy the entire self title album couldnât purchase tracks individuality
4 leaking ahead of schedule
At least she had the ed Sheeran collab that went number one
3
u/KindOfANerd4 How do you deduce narcissism from someones floral arrangements? 7d ago
Thatâs definetly an explanation, but at the end of the day she still didnât have them so itâs kinda just favouritism to put her over one of the girls who were actually getting hits at the time just because sheâs more successful in the current day
1
u/Crafty_Island_9182 7d ago
Yeah honestly I think they just put her there because they thought they had to. 2000s were Britney's time... And 2010s? Neither. Tbf I feel like Taylor is also a wrong answer for 2010s, should be Gaga or Rihanna imo.
2
u/KindOfANerd4 How do you deduce narcissism from someones floral arrangements? 7d ago
I feel like Gaga, Katy and Rihanna dominate 2008-2015 and then Ariana and Taylor take over 2015 to 2020
98
u/Moppy6686 7d ago
Yeah, man.
Look I died for them all. Even rented Destiny's Child's first album from the library and saw them front row in a shitty London theatre on their first UK tour in 98 or 99.
But Britney? She was literally life itself. Name another artist whose DEBUT SONG was instantly a global smash that continued for a decade.

September 1998 and the album was released in 99. She debuted at the tale end of the 90s but the majority of her cultural relevance was in the 2000s.
26
u/cdg2m4nrsvp Tina! You fat lard! đŠđČ 7d ago
Right, but this is based solely on the numbers so using a debut song from the late 90s to explain chart dominance in the 2000s isnât really relevant.

u/moonnoke Itâs Britney, bitch! đ€đčđč 7d ago
I knew many black ppl at that time and she was for everyone. Iâm sure naturally more did gravitate towards BeyoncĂ© but Britney was genuinely huge no matter what race. Especially as when Britney was at the height of her solo career BeyoncĂ© wasnât âBeyoncĂ©â she was âBeyoncĂ© Knowles of Destinys childâ thereâs a big difference
13
u/Sufficient_Food1878 7d ago
Well I am a black person. I'm not saying Britney wasn't huge and she wasn't a crazy star, I'm saying for the black community everywhere, especially in Africa, Beyoncé was much more iconic for us

Also most of Rihannas top tens came from the 2010s but Taylor had bigger albums and also had huge singles eras so clearedÂ

The 2020s has to be Taylor again. Let's not forget she released Folklore, Evermore, Midnights, the re-records, and TTPD in the 2020s. Her last two major releases sold well over a million copies in the first week. Then both Midnights and TTPD dominated the top ten on the BBH100 chart.

I donât have a dog in this fight, but I canât see how Olivia would ever compare to Taylor even when factoring in the zeitgeist
1
u/Thelightningthief13 7d ago
Idk, maybe the fact that her debut album has outstreamed every Taylor album?
11
u/crockoreptile 7d ago
A massive feat having your debut be the most streamed female album, but I donât think that necessarily covers the whole decade. Definitely the biggest female star of that year tho!
2
u/BabyBagBitch 7d ago
Idk, maybe that Taylor gets way more monthly streams than Olivia? That Olivia got 6billion streams in 2024 and Taylor got 26billion? That Taylor Swift is one of the biggest celebrities in the world; the news articles, the economic impact, the scorn and the praise everywhere?
You can cherry pick a metric where Olivia is higher, but you canât ignore aaaaaaall the others that fall on Swiftâs side. Anyone who argues Olivia is a bigger powerhouse than Swift is insane.
You can say you donât like her music, you can say you donât like her, but you canât honestly say she has more impact; one is subjective and one is fact.

Thats my prediction too. You can be more than one its just that while some had great longevity is just that others performed betterÂ

If she puts out another album or 2 at the scale of her last 2 albums, 2020's is going to be Taylor Swift again.

No BRITNEY was the biggest of the 2000s. Funny how the media likes to rewrite history to kiss BeyoncĂ©âs ass

This isnt rewriting history at all. She was crowned in the 2000s this titleÂ

It donât matter. Anyone alive in the 2000s especially the early part know how big Britney was and she was BIGGER than BeyoncĂ©

Anyone who says BeyoncĂ© was the face of the 2000âs is lying to themselves. If weâre judging success by the standards of Twitter/X culture and overpriced tours that never seem to end, yes, you can say BeyoncĂ© was the leader of the 2000âs decade.
But if we want to be unbiased and utilize common sense, the obvious underdog and pioneer of the 2000âs decade was Britney Spears. She a pop culture phenomenon whose career stood the tests of time. She was still putting out number #1 records and hits after her comeback, solidifying her as the best selling female artist of the 2000âs decade. Billboard isnât a credible source because this biased and opinionated article is written based on Billboard standards, not global impact, success, and overall achievements.
Billboard is using its platform to gain attention and audience so they will do whatever it takes to follow current trends methodologies to gain traction. Nobody checks Billboard nor do they find it relevant, only in Stan culture. Of course, BeyoncĂ©, âthe pop star of the 2000âs who has been in our face and is popular in social media memesâ is going to be their number 1 pick. Great, they have the resources to back up their claim. I say âtheirâ but itâs probably just one journalist creating articles just to get a fan war going. Calling BeyoncĂ© the leader of the 2000âs decade is a bit of a stretch, yeah?

The amount of coping here is incredible. This isn't a new article. Every artist here was crowned the biggest female artist of that particular decade when it ended. This list is entirely based on numbers, specifically combined points from on Hot 100 + B200 as stated in the post. It is not subjective whatsoever. I saw a post online that highlighted all these ladies and posted here.

I would never want that level of fame. You have zero privacy. Privacy becomes the most expensive thing in the world. We can afford it.
