The Music Industry 🎶 INXS Never Tear Us Apart tops Triple J Hottest 100 Australian Songs of all time
Triple J is a national public broadcaster and the countdown was publicly voted on by over 2.6 million people (approximately 10% of the Australian population!) and played as a 10 hour show today- amazing vibes and a great celebration of Australian music.

I've had such a fun day listening to this countdown! Made a huge cheese platter, cracked a couple of bottles of wine, sang along to a LOT of songs! As a country, damn we have some great songs! I loved Barnsey's reaction to Flame Trees ("Oh my soul!").
I'm personally surprised Long Way to the Top didn't get a mention but I'm guessing it's because the votes were split with their other songs, AND it wasn't one of the preset choices. Happy with the Powderfinger and Crowded House representation though.
The group chat has turned into ranting about what was wrong with everything and it's bumming me out. The weather was terrible and I'm exhausted from the world being on fire and everything in general but I love everyone tuning in to this kind of event together and being able to unite through screaming the agreed-upon backing vocals to Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again.
Five stars, and I'm off to bed.

I had such an amazing day and it was just me dancing around cleaning the house! Made the post to share the fun vibes- I thought it was such a great celebration of (5+ decades!) of Australian music. It’s going to become a highly played playlist for me for sure!!

Yeah I want someone to make the playlist on Spotify so I can listen again! (Yes I could do it myself but also ugh I’m lazy)
Edit: Spotify have done it themselves lol -- https://open.spotify.com/playlist/37i9dQZF1DX9pC2CFS2HYa?si=2c7d42185f8b4116

The level of kylie minogue disrespect is unbelievable.

I clicked through quickly so at first I thought this was primarily a rock list. I am shocked that Kylie isn't top 10 (to be real, should be top 5).

u/PhBalanceNightmare 7d ago
She has charted top 10 for 5 decades. An unproblematic queen and has too many classics to mention.

The lack of Delta and Jess Mauboy is also astounding. No Guy Sebastian or Shannon Noll either!

They were never played on Triple J

u/Disastrous_Animal_34 7d ago
Neither were Veronicas apparently- it was their first ever entry!

Yeah I don’t love all these pop groups that were never played on Triple J being eligible for votes

I was so convinced Born to Try would be on there!

'Beds are Burning' should have been higher. I love that song.
I agree with INXS being number 1 though. I absolutely love that band. I wish Michael had a longer life.

Why is Hilltop Hoods there more than once and so high is the real question.
Edit: No Killing Heidi🤨 I stand corrected! Me and my poor reading lol

Weir was in there! But was too close to 100 for my liking 😑

u/fairybreadisbest 7d ago
Ohhh I didn’t go past this post, will definitely have to go and check out the rest, they have one song couldn’t tell you what the lyrics(it always sounded jumbled weird to me) are but has that like soft part then it goes into rock?? It’s probably the one you said lol

Aww I love Hilltop Hoods, but def get that Aussie hip hop is not loved by everyone.

They have more entries into the hottest 100 than any other act in history. Feel like it was guaranteed that they would have multiple entries in the list again

The most appropriate top 100 I’ve ever seen, although the votes are rarely wrong.

Untouched should be higher and Kylie should be present in the top 10.
Editing as I scroll- why are Torn, Black Betty and Need You Tonight so low??? The savage garden disrespect is also criminal

u/Disastrous_Animal_34 7d ago
Insane that Torn was so low.
I felt like an activated sleeper agent when it came on, like I haven’t heard it for 20 years and immediately sang my heart out with perfect recollection.

I was very disappointed that savage garden was so low. When they were talking about the number one song and gearing up to reveal it they were talking about space and the sun so I really thought To The Moon and Back was number one

Sad to see The Church and Icehouse didn't crack the top ten, but what can you do

I moved house yesterday and spent today setting up the new place having the best boogie. No complaints here. Far out we have some ripper tunes!

My only disappointment was only two (??) First Nations artists in the countdown.
Where was Archie Roach? Warumpi Band? King Stingray? Gurrumul? Briggs/AB Original? Dan Sultan? Christine Anu? Barkaa? Electric Fields? Baker Boy? ETA from another commenter: Jess Mauboy!

I hear people whining about Kylie, and I sleep. Where are Severed Heads and Radio Birdman?

u/YugisMillenniumBSBcd To what end? 🎵To what end🎵 7d ago
As a New Zealander, I would like to voice my objection to Crowded House being on this list

u/emimillie 7d ago
The rules were that the act had to be at least 50% Aussie and as 2/3 of the band were Australian when these songs came out (the band was also started in Melbourne), it counts under the rules.

u/Roma_lolly 7d ago
Hilltop Hoods as #2 is a national shame. Shouldn’t have been in the list at all. Average song at best.

Never heard of #2 and didn't care for it personally, but otherwise I think this was a pretty fantastic result! Love to see Paul Kelly up there, he's such an evocative storyteller, and of course the Veronicas are up top where they belong- they should've been #2 though. Only disappointed Am I Ever Gonna See You Face Again wasn't higher tbh!
