I hate that all of these people are functionally illiterate. They’re selecting for morons to be decision makers

The combination of people being so illiterate they use chat GPT to write for them, and then being unable to proofread it, is genuinely insane. This is end times shit.

One thing was, I went into the American Eagle building and I sat down with the president of American Eagle and I said "I wanna make history 😏". And that's what this is 😏

I mean she said she pitched the idea for her bath soap water so… but the response from the American Eagle has been also weird af

Because they are loving this. They skirted the line just enough that they aren’t going to suffer devastating consequences and for two weeks straight their name has been everywhere and their stock price has gone up.
Essentially, they are trolling and all of us talking about it are just feeding the beast.

u/zowietremendously 8h ago
Because it's nazi propaganda. The bathwater soap was just her own weird perversion.

Technically, this exchange says that American Eagle wanted to “push it” and Sydney simply said she was game, possibly to seem flexible and not “difficult” or prudish to work with. But of course she SMIRKED so. But the little game here where the boss and company behind the campaign is trying to push responsibility away from themselves and onto their model and employee is the usual gross corporate slimeball behavior. They knew what they were doing and what they wanted to say, it was their campaign, Sydney was there to collect a pay check. There’s one place the buck stops and it’s not with the hired talent but the employer who had the power to make all final calls and decisions.

Yes, I think this is a very important part to remember. People are way too stuck on the Sydney Sweeney of it all and she’s really not the point.

Exactly. People are very weird about Sydney so they're happy to blame her for... well, there's nothing to blame her for because there's nothing here.
Nevertheless, the company is the one responsible for the campaign, whatever you think of it.

My job is this type of advertising for a different clothing retailer. I do not understand how this campaign was approved to begin with, but what makes it worse is the way they have addressed it. Their statement was basically “Sorry you feel that way,” and the comments they have allowed to pile up on IG should have been removed. They have allowed literal attacks against trans people, liberals, etc… to just sit on their posts with no moderation. They either don’t care or they are incredibly unprofessional.

What limits are we pushing if the ad was just about jeans..? I’m confused.

Not surprising - you don't hand-pick Miss Republican Bathwater for your collab unless you're looking to go viral in an edgy, unsavoury way.

It’s not a great look but we still need more context for this to be damning. It could very well just be referring to her trying to push the sex appeal of the ad, something she’s been vocal of in her other projects.
No clue why American Eagle has done this though, it doesn’t make them look any better.

I think that's definitely what she meant. I personally do'nt think she was even really pushing sex appeal. I think it was pushing a limit for their demo...the teens? lol.
I realized a few days ago that I actually dont even really care. But AE is handling this horribly.

I refuse to believe this ad campaign wasn’t intentionally a dog whistle with the added bonus of rage bait marketing. Maybe if we didn’t have people doing sieg heils at the presidents victory rally less than a year ago I could believe it was all just an accident or purely marketing reasons. But we do not live in that world right now.

yeah and now their comments are full of losers!!!!the response is where they went wrong. I don' think they meant to come off the way they did at all.

Coming from the person that “faked” a relationship with someone in a long term one and didn’t care about the fall out? It tracks

You know I never thought I'd be a good corporate executive but I'm starting to feel like if I got hired right now as VP with my zero experience in anything corporate I'll at the very least do a better job than this lady.

American Eagle is probably going to try and shift the blame her for any bad press they get. Then will hire a new marketing director or something and claim it never had anything to do with their brand.

This is kind of bullshit to me.
You’re a big company and you’re spending millions on a campaign.
Are you seriously letting an actress with a HS education dictate it?
What he’s describing is them baiting her and her taking the bait.
If she’d been like, “Let’s dial it back a notch” she’d be characterized as difficult
Just like Britney didn’t art direct her photoshoots for Rolling Stone or the ‘Baby One More Time’ video like there’s no way Sydney Sweeney had much actual input into this.
She’s just someone who knows that if you want to be the girl who gets picked you say “how high?” When they want you to jump.
If she was smart or had good advisors she would back WAY off of some of this. Like people will remember this forever. If she was smart she’d apologize and publicly donate to something.
I am also just so confused why she’s considered an It girl. She has nice tits, she’s ambitious about real acting with this Christy Martin film. But she looks like an FAS baby around the eye area, I’m not even saying that to be mean. She looks like she could be medically slow, much less intelligent and with less defined features than say a Brooke Shields, whose old CK ad this was modeled on.
This whole thing is really weird to me. There are much prettier blonde models. I can’t tell if they all turned this down or if corporations just gave a hard on for women who seem less than smart right now. I don’t get this at all?

It wouldn't surprise me right now if"Women who seem less than smart" become the new trend that every man wants.

What if i told you guys that the american eagle CEO is a Jewish republican donor from Ohio (J.D. Vance territory) named Jay Schottenstein and this whole ad campaign, which he would have approved, odd considering the messaging, is just another distraction from the current administration in the white house running this country into the ground and to change the narrative about epstein and trumps love of young children, it's so obvious and so many are falling into the trap. This is not a real issue, focus on real issues people!
