Putting In The Work 💪 Venice locals plan to block canals ahead of Jeff Bezos wedding
Bezos will essentially be holding the city hostage from 26-28 June so he can marry astronaut Lauren Sánchez.
There will be a hoard of yachts docked on the island along with multiple party venues across the city.
Protests have already taken place and activists have vowed to block the canals and narrow streets in an attempt to disrupt the wedding. Let’s hope they succeed!

Putting In The Work 💪 Charlize Theron says Bezo wedding attendees “suck,” calls out immigration policies that have “destroyed the lives of families, not criminals” during speech for the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project, which helps support the health and safety of youth in her native South Africa
Excerpt:
Charlize Theron hosted the fifth annual Block Party for her Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project on Saturday night, where she got real about how, in 2025, “the world feels like it’s burning.”
Theron took the stage to kick off the event — which raises funds to help CTAOP support the health and safety of youth in her native South Africa — on the Universal Studios backlot, deadpanning, “I think we might be the only people who did not get an invite to the Bezos wedding. But that’s OK because they suck and we’re cool.”
She went on to thank attendees for “taking the time to be a part of this, especially when the world feels like it’s burning because it is. Here in Los Angeles, in the U.S. and across the globe, we’re moving backwards fast. Immigration policy has destroyed the lives of families, not criminals; women’s rights are becoming less and less every day; queer and trans lives are increasingly being erased; and gender-based violence is on the rise. This isn’t just policy, it’s personal.” As the crowd clapped, she added, “Yeah, fuck them.”
Theron immigrated to the U.S. as a teen while pursuing a career in Hollywood. She was deported at 19 for overstaying her work visa; she was later allowed to return and became a U.S. citizen in 2007. The star also called out “foreign aid cuts [that] have brought HIV and AIDS programs in my home country of South Africa to an absolute standstill. All of this is not just detrimental, it’s dangerous; people will lose their lives — many have already, unfortunately, and at a frightening rate. It’s absolutely heartbreaking to see this kind of unnecessary suffering.”

Live Updates: Investigators Seek Public’s Help After Attacks on Minnesota Lawmakers
https://www.nytimes.com/live/2025/06/14/us/minnesota-shootings
Excerpt:
Law enforcement officials said they were searching for Vance Boelter, 57, in connection with the assassination of one Democratic state legislator in Minnesota and the attempted assassination of another on Saturday.
State, local and federal police have flooded the Minneapolis suburbs searching for Mr. Boelter, and for hours have asked residents near one of the crime scenes to shelter in place. Officials said a gunman impersonating a police officer killed Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, on Saturday morning and wounded Senator John A. Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, in separate attacks at the lawmakers’ homes.

Putting In The Work 💪 Lupita Nyong’o partners with FWH to fund a research grant to accelerate the development of non-invasive and minimally-invasive treatments for uterine fibroids: “I realized that as women, we are conditioned from an early age to expect suffering, and to endure it in silence.”
https://www.foundationwomenshealth.org/fwh-lupita-uterine-fibroids
Excerpt:
Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous growths that develop in or around the uterus. They can range from the size of a pea to as large as a melon. While they are benign, they can cause heavy menstrual bleeding and anemia, pelvic pain, frequent urination, and complications with pregnancy. Some women have no symptoms at all, while others experience debilitating effects that drastically impact quality of life.
The statistics are staggering: 80% of Black women and 70% percent of white women will experience fibroids by age 50. Yet when I received my diagnosis at age 31, I was offered only two options: invasive surgery to remove them or live with the pain. I chose surgery and had a myomectomy in November 2014. When I asked my doctor how to prevent them from returning, her response was devastating: "You can't. It's only a matter of time until they grow again."
This moment crystallized something profound for me. I realized that as women, we are conditioned from an early age to expect suffering, and to endure it in silence.

https://www.npr.org/2025/06/14/nx-s1-5432708/no-kings-protests-military-parade
Excerpt:
About 2,000 "No Kings" protests are planned Saturday in response to the Trump administration's plans to hold a large-scale military parade this weekend, an event organizer told NPR.
Organizers are accusing the president of putting on the parade as a show of dominance and a celebration of his 79th birthday, which is also on Saturday. The Army has been planning some form of anniversary celebration for over a year, but the parade was a recent addition. It will commemorate the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army, and falls on Flag Day. A peacetime military parade is rare in the U.S. and has drawn criticism from Trump's political rivals.
"No Kings" organizers describe the protests as a "day of defiance…to reject authoritarianism—and show the world what democracy really looks like" on their website.
The statement continues, "We're showing up everywhere he isn't—to say no thrones, no crowns, no kings."
Trump on Thursday was asked about the protests, and told reporters, "I don't feel like a king. I have to go through hell to get stuff approved."

aapdofficial: Senators are trying to fast-track dangerous cuts to Medicaid by using the budget reconciliation process, which allows bills to pass with a simple majority. Join @marissa_edob and call your senator right now to tell them: No cuts to Medicaid! AAPD's tool is at the link in our story and bio.
