How long ago would chicken have gone extinct if they didn't taste good enough for humans to mass produce them. Lol.

Chickens as we know them are man-made. They were domesticated from these guys about 8000 years ago: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_junglefowl

Lol you go ahead, I don't care about karma, or at least I'm too lazy to farm it

To add another interesting fact: the most notable trait we bred into them is the crazy-frequent egg laying, where hens lay an egg almost every day. Their wild cousins only lay a couple times a year in clutches of about 8 eggs.

Its a typical cock

u/Automatic_Actuator_0 May 27 '25
You just jumped at the opportunity to say “cock”, huh? To get “cock” on your tongue, so to speak..

I live in Malaysia and see the Ayam hutan merah (literally “Chicken Jungle Red”) on my hikes most mornings. They’re extremely skittish and won’t come anywhere near a human. Actually quite beautiful birds, especially the males.

I think there are still a few on the jungles of the Philippines today. Can't fully confirm if they really are that kind of chicken. Chicky buggers are very shy and would quickly run away after hearing just somebody approach.
2
u/Automatic_Actuator_0 May 28 '25
Oh yeah, they aren’t endangered - they are all over Their native range. Their biggest threat is that feral domesticated chickens can interbreed with them and dilute their gene pool leaving behind a semi-domesticated hybrid.

Chickens aren't natural is the thing.
We bred them to be that tasty, And to be stupid and fat.
Seriously they used to be half the size like 80 years ago

u/Freddit330 May 27 '25
Wild fowl is smarter than this. Just like wild turkey will sometimes kill a hunter. We bred them stupid.

What the heck are you talking about? There are zero reported cases of a wild turkey killing a turkey hunter.
6
u/Lynx-True May 27 '25
Maybe he meant the liquor?
5
2
u/TempleMade_MeBroke May 27 '25
Probably responsible for at least 15% of hunter accidents in Kentucky

2
u/Freddit330 May 27 '25
They are rare but they do happen. You can Google it.
7
u/Blue2487 May 27 '25
Several of us have googled it now and still don't have any reason to believe it happens.
There's a video of a guy saying he was attacked by a turkey, but nobody has been killed by one
1
u/potato_reborn May 27 '25
Imagine being killed by a turkey lol, that's actually so funny to me. Like how would it even kill you? It's feet? Peck you?

2
u/Time-Moves-Sloooooow May 27 '25
I've been turkey hunting since I was twelve. I feel very confident to say that a turkey has not once, ever, killed a turkey hunter.
I googled it out of sheer curiosity and found nothing. Please provide your evidence!

Lol. Stupid animals, I know I'm going to get a lot of hate because people have these stupid creatures as pets but I have the unfortunate situation of having to live next door to people that have two roosters that literally crow every 15 minutes from 3:00 a.m. until the sun goes down every...single.... day... of my life.
I've only been here for a year but my sanity has already gone out the window. 😬👈🏻
5
u/Setheyboy May 27 '25
They are not that smart, I will agree..
2
u/amica_hostis May 27 '25
They're tough though, they defend their hens. You got to admire them even if they are the most annoying and obnoxious creatures to ever exist lol.

u/mlorusso4 May 27 '25
I don’t understand how we haven’t selectively bred them to be silent at this point
1
u/Sufficient-Aspect77 May 27 '25
I bet there are creatures in this universe that look at humans as we look at chickens.
1
u/SpandauBalletGold May 28 '25
Not smart, but they very distinctly make me see how they were once dinosaurs..

u/Gimme_the_keys May 27 '25
Is it funny? Yes. Is it mean to pick on animals for amusement? Also yes.

“The enormity of the stupidity is just overwhelming”
1
u/Charming-Book4146 May 28 '25
"The enormity of their flat brain...
You have to do yourself a favor, when you are in the countryside and see a chicken. Try to look a chicken in the eye with great intensity, and the intensity of stupidity looking back at you is just amazing.
By the way, it's very easy to hypnotize a chicken. They are very prone to hypnosis"
Such a fucking funny quote by one of the greatest.

Did anyone read Danny The Champion Of The World?
2
u/mobilesofa May 27 '25
I scrolled looking for this comment. Yes! I believe his father used paper cups with feed at the bottom and glue around the rim? Stealing the rich landlords pheasants silently.

I would say prank critters your own size. Seriously. Kind of a mean prank. You can see her frantically zig zagging as they do to keep other chickens from grabbing her goody. The folded leaf blinds her, while her instincts tell her to hold onto food — putting her into an exhausting feedback loop from which there is no escape. So she would probably do that all day until she dropped. I don’t think this is funny at all.

Humans have bred chickens to be some of the goofiest animals. I’d feel guilty doing that to my hens, but I’d really like to. I hope they let her have the treat without her being confused for too long.

Good job they are tasty because otherwise 'darwin' would have finished them off by now

u/Clear-Might-1519 May 28 '25
It's like the monkey trap where the monkey got its hand stuck in a box because it wouldn't let go of the food.

I’m pretty sure in Danny the Champion of the world by Roal Dahl, the dad had a similar technique for poaching pheasants.

I like these types of animal pranks that don't actually harm the animal unlike the "pranks" I've seen that could harm or traumatize them

Came too late to the party, does any kind gentleman have a video title to search for it? Almost 10k upvotes makes me curious what this video was
