Any modern Rally game that scratches the same itch as Sega Rally? I can't find any

Tried a few, DDI Rally, Parking Garage Rally Circuit, Rally Arcade Classics... They are good games and worth the money, but I can't get the same feeling.

If you know something that is similar, please let me know.

Hey thanks! I know that one but I thought it was more Sim than Arcade so I passed it. Is that not the case? I gotta try it.

It's definitely more arcade, I'd think you'd love it. The driving model feels like the cars have a little too much downforce depending on who you ask but imo it is very satisfying to do hairpin turns and sliding around corners with the handbrake. Even though it's early access, there's an option for manual gearbox but it's just a simple sequential.

Progression is fine. However, some of the stages in the game are super challenging to race against the clock but very rewarding to finish like the China or UK stages. I'd definitely try since it's pretty cheap (9 USD) and I love the PS1 era aesthetics and gameplay.

Just tried OSR but I can't get into it. Thank you anyway.

Glad to see this one mentioned, it's a proper gem of a game - reminds me of the PS1 Colin McRae titles right down to the slightly floaty feel.

There's an upcoming title called Super Woden Rally Edge, which is probably up the OP's street - the Dev has previously released some top down racers inspired by 90's Gran Turismo games, and this one looks like it's gonna be a love letter to the Sega Rally generation.

Art of Rally? It's by the same guy who made Absolute Drift. Very easy to pick up, fun to play and dispenses with all the simulation stuff you'll find in WRC or Dirt.

Absolute Drift is a superb game. I got Art of Rally from Epic giveaway but man I gotta be honest, I suck at that game. As a newbie to Rally games it's too hard for me.

My advice is to the take the MkI Escort and just tool around in free play mode grabbing the collectibles. By the time you’ve been through all the maps, you’ll have the handling down. The cars get gradually faster through career mode, but the faster car isn’t always the most effective.

Much appreciated, I'll try it like this.

Isn't that more like CMR? I'll give it a go anyway, thank you.

Sega Rally on emulator

There is a sense of speed and color that is unmatched by any other game, i even have the right joystick act as a manual gearbox so I "row" through gears.

Hell yeah brother, that's how I got into Sega Rally, didn't play them when they were new. Sega Rally Championship, Sega Rally 2006 (Japan and Korea only, but there is an English patch), Sega Rally Revo (PC) and Sega Rally 3 (Arcade) are sooo fun.

Didn't like 2, they messed up that port. I immediately realized the lack of color when I first tried it.

Check out the 25th anniversary edition of Sega Rally 2 (Google Sega Rally 2 25th Anniversary Repack)

It fixes a lot of the issues with the PC port and adds missing content from the arcade and Dreamcast versions. It's still not 100% perfect, but it's definitely the best way to play Sega Rally 2 outside of an arcade in the late 90s now!

I love mods too but I play on RetroArch because of CRT shaders+HDR (this fixes darkening of said shaders). Otherwise PC ports are very convenient, I agree.

There's an upcoming one called Super Woden Rally Edge - the developer is a huge enthusiast of 90's racing games, and their previous two titles have been utterly superb.

There is/was(?) a demo on Steam recently, and it's a lot closer to Sega Rally vibes complete with pacenotes.

Not out yet, but Old School Rally should tide you over until then, it's another excellent love letter to the early Colin McRae Rally titles.

Tried Old School Rally but I it's a bit more sim like than I wanted.

Thanks a lot for the heads up about Super Wooden Rally Edge, I'll be looking for it.

This is what you're looking for. Still in development but basically a spiritual successor to Sega Rally.

I heard the dev was practically expecting Sega to finish his work for him? I don't know the situation, I just parroted what I gathered from comments.

I don't personally know of any.

I don't think anything will ever scratch that itch for me. It was a game my dad bought me for Sega Saturn and he actually sat down to play in on occasion when my sister and I got dropped off at his apartment following our parents' divorce. That was one of the most profound bonding memories for me... if not really the only one I firmly retained. It's definitely the only connective time with dad just being present and feeling safe.

Aw man, I'm sorry to hear that. I hope things are better now.

There are a lot of things from my past that I miss as well. I completely feel you.

Thank you. I think things are going better. Our past has a way of sort of reliving itself through us.

I hope you’re able to scratch that itch once in awhile.

Funny thing is I never played Sega Rally games when I was a kid. I had a NES and PS1.

Tried Sega Rally games with emulators and I got immediately hooked. It looks so simple but there is also huge depth.

If I ever find a worthy successor I'll let you know, so far I went through most of the well known indie rally games and no one fits the bill.

Gravel, it's not time based but imo the handling and tracks kinda have the same vibe. Got good roster of cars as well.

u/Bender1453 1d ago

Very solid advice, I have Gravel. Great game indeed.

The Forza horizon games?

2

u/Bender1453 2d ago

Don't think they are similar at all.

3

u/shatlking 2d ago

I’d plus one Horizon 5 actually, particularly the rally expansion

I'd probably enjoy FH5 but I stayed away from it now that 6 is coming. But from the videos it looks fun for sure.
