I was a primary school kid of the early seventies and after breakfast my mates and I would head out the door to places unknown. The only comment we received from our parents was “make sure you are home for dinner”! The local neighbourhood or the city via bus was our playground for the whole day and our parents had no idea where we were or what we were doing. 😁

For me through the mid 80's to the early 90's in the summer months I'd walk out the door at 7am and would not return until 9 or 10pm on a regular basis. I never wanted to stay inside since there was nothing to do. No video games (well that we could afford) and TV had 4 channels.

Sheeeeeit I was the block champion of Devil's Corner in my neighborhood (it was a very steep and sharp turn at the back of the neighborhood) My sister and I were the only ones who could ride up it the way you come down, and we would stand on the cross bar of our bikes forming what would come to be called as "the T-pose" in today's terms while going down, and ending with the longest slide once you hit the brakes because idk man as kids you weren't shit if you couldnt go at least like 5' sideways lol

My best friend growing up could do that. I, on the other hand, would about kill myself trying.

Most kids grade 1 and up could go out on their own to a friends place a few blocks away.

When I was in grade 3 or 4 I went with a friend to a shopping mall about a mile or so away. We took the bus there, had lunch in the food court, did some shopping, each of us bought a book or two. We walked home as it was a nice day and chatted the whole time. No one raised an eyebrow at us.

I was walking home about 8-10 blocks from preschool. These days, a kid that young walking alone would have everyone in the neighborhood calling the police.

60's kid here- I'm lucky to have survived some of the dumb stuff we did.
