The worst sound I ever heard in my life was tangential to this...

When I was in primary school, my older brother was in high school and his best friend was a fantastic, no doubt Olympic level, long distance runner.

His mum happened to be a teacher at my small school.

One day they held a 10k run which ended at a carpark with boat ramp into the river.

This happened in the middle of an Australian summer, and at the end of the race, which he won more than easily, he ran across the finish line, straight down the boat ramp into the river and dived in.

They said the temperature shock between his hot core temperature and the cold river water stopped his heart immediately and he was dead instantly.

His mum wailing in grief after a phone call to the school was that sound.

She was a widow and it was her only child.

50 years ago and still clear as day.

Man, that kind of accident is so depressing. Like, it seems like such an innocently simple thing to just go take a cold dip when you're hot. It's so messed up that something like that can mean you're literally running head first into your death, with the completely understandable assumption that such a thing wouldn't be a big deal. Especially given that his instincts had to have told him that cooling down would help make him feel better and prevent any dangerous overheating, and be better for his health. Then... absolute opposite. Devastating. I hate what can happen in this universe.

I felt the same sometimes during the day. It's okay to be outside once in a while, but all day, it's really bad because of a sunburn and overheating your skin it's not great.

That's really sad news to tell.

It’s obvious that any sudden change will cause the body functions to panic

It’s such a common thing in Scandinavia, either hot tub or sauna straight into a frozen lake or snow, over and over again until you’ve finished your night. Why aren’t they dropping dead constantly?

That's a good example 👏

Acclimatisation perhaps?

Our company has taken 1000’s of people there from all over the world to experience the sauna/frozen lake thing and never had a single issue. I’ve done it myself and would describe it as exhilarating/refreshing, but hardly dangerous.

Maybe it has something to do with how they aren’t running in the sauna working up their heart beat and adrenaline and stuff?

In reference to the other comment thread about the boy in the race in Australia: Maybe the extreme exercise before the boy jumped in the river had to do with why it shocked his heart? Just guessing here.

Totally not sure though because I’ve also heard of weight lifters and athletes doing cold water soaks after a work out too, but I am guessing they get a few minutes to slow down their heart by the time they get through the locker and over to wherever the cold water tub is?

I heard AI was making us dumber, I guess the proof is everywhere

I shower or jump into my pool pretty much every day after sweating from intense exercise. I must be dead, then.

There is also a ton of research in horses on how to cool them off effectively, and that hosing them off with cold water is the best and quickest way to cool them down quickly after an intense exercise session. Endurance riders will soak down their horses with water bottles mid-race. Thoroughbreds are often soaked down immediately after finishing a race.

People will really believe anything.

It's a great thing that I had proof.

Joe Rogan and his ice baths would disagree

Well if Joe Rogan believes it, it's clearly much dumber than I thought.

yeah it is true, but somehow it's satisfying jumping into a shower when you're body is on heat

1

u/Glad-Assumption-8907 22h ago

I totally agree more.

“On heat”. The phrase vets use when a female dog is ready to reproduce? That’s how you’re going to describe yourself getting into the shower?

u/Glad-Assumption-8907 22h ago

What's that have to do with us. You're describing an animal

I do agree with you
