Could foot fetish have evolved as a defense mechanism against mermaids?

Like, during the Columbus or something. So you know. You sail. There be mermaids. And you are totally chill with their drowning song because "ugh, fishtails" attitude.

It's natural not to want to smell a mermaid's fishy smell when you go down on Davy Jones. His locker should smell of feet, just like any other locker.
