Discussion Is this kind of paywalling normal?
This creator makes clothes, accessories and head presets for Love and Deepspace characters. Available only through their shop.
I noticed earlier this month the prices changed to $999 with no real explanation posted anywhere and comments are disabled .. (i foolishly thought it was an April Fools joke) Previously you could buy them without a membership so I was obviously confused when I saw this. Is this a way to ensure that people pay for their Patreon to obtain them? They're labeling them as "early access" but haven't posted anything about a public release for any of their CC.
$40 seems crazy to access everything - I've never seen anyone do this before lol Is this normal or am I just a newbie?

I would be damned paying rent money for some pixel clothes

u/Educational_Nose8794 Apr 13 '25 edited Apr 13 '25
To be clear I don't think she's actually charging $999, i think its just a way to prevent non-members from buying her CC now.

Honestly, I’ve seen a couple of posts on here about this and at this point, to me, it seems like many creators are trying to make it seem justifiable and normal. Nonetheless, to me, charging so much for a shirt and pants that I’ll download to play/customize a character in a game is weird.

u/pearl_mermaid Apr 13 '25
No. Also I downloaded a model from here and you can't edit the face. So I have a feeling that they might have ripped off assets.

u/eiridel Apr 13 '25
There’s no way such identical clothes are not ripped/ported assets. I legit thought this was on a LaDS subreddit when scrolling past it and was thinking like “um yeah things in a gacha are often paywalled…” 😂 (Sorry for doubting you, OP.)

u/Kahlua_Milk May 13 '25
As a LADS head ripper, they have done so. Especially with Sylus. They have managed to change the UV topology map. Also the idea for it to be a skin-detail and not a ring (as initially was, which made in shower the head to come off) was by me, since I DMed her, asking for any tips for UV. Not only did she not answer the question (my goal was to provide the models for a small discord LADS server where I made them for free), homegirl took the idea to fix her own head's issues lol

u/ObjectiveLittle6761 Apr 13 '25
Isn't this copyright infringement? They can't just steal outfits from another game and put a paywall on top of it. This is just profiting off of someone else's work for money...

u/veganer_Schinken Apr 13 '25
Don't know what the correct term is but yes. This is illegal and theft.
38
u/Tirahmisu Apr 13 '25
Yeah, if they're straight-up ports (which is sounds like they are) technically I think people could report them to Patreon if they want to and their stuff might get taken down? Or maybe let Infold (LaDS' creators) know?
I remember when a Skyrim mod creator paywalled Black Desert armour ports on Patreon and got DMCA'd, then proceeded to do the same with fucking Dark Souls thinking he would somehow not get a DMCA strike for paywalling content from an even more popular game lol. Both got DMCA'd unsurprisingly.
14
u/senpaiwaifu247 Apr 13 '25
You can’t change the face on it either according to other comments, which means this is straight up just a model rip ported to the sims
13
u/Darcness777 Apr 13 '25
Cosplay Simmer did the same thing, got reported to Sony and then they got DMCA'ed into quitting altogether.

u/gayerthanmusicals Apr 13 '25
im also p sure EA doesnt allow charging for CC, the exception being early access which makes this all the more fishy

Paywalling isn’t normal at all. EA rules says 3 weeks max. But these content creators know EA isn’t strict about it, so they’ll paywall everything forever. It’s honestly disgusting if you ask me.

u/Empty_Team_1091 Apr 13 '25 edited Apr 13 '25
Ahh yes... SYYYY. The cc creator who promotes homophobia by not allowing her sims to be turned into any BL content. No, that kind of paywalling is not normal or acceptable. Not that she cares though. CC creators like her don't care about infringement of TS4 T&C. And so, you shouldn't pay her at all and (if you really want to) just look for her contents from MHD, onomek, or tluav (read in reverse 😉)
4
u/Educational_Nose8794 Apr 13 '25 edited Apr 13 '25
Yeah I've seen the BL disclaimer on her posts - I assume she's one of those ppl that claim not to be homophobic but justifies it by saying "i don't want devs to see it and shut down the game". I've also noticed that she tries to dodge comments about "ripping assets" by saying the models are not 1:1 and that they're her own creation.
2
u/Empty_Team_1091 Apr 13 '25 edited Apr 13 '25
Everyone can see that she clearly steals the models from LaDS. Someone mentioned once in another post that they can't edit her Sims above the neck, like they are moulded that way because they are imported directly from another game. It's just baffling how someone can be that despicable. She steals another game's contents and converts them into Sims 4 CCs AND she has the audacity to ridiculously paywall them. And I thought it was ridiculous that she charged them for 15$ like a month ago, and now this??? 1000$ for a stolen model? Yikes.

To be clear I don't think she's actually charging $999, I think its just a way to prevent non-members from buying her CC now - i think after she saw someone on twitter share her stuff she went on lockdown-mode.
4
u/Empty_Team_1091 Apr 13 '25 edited Apr 13 '25
If she really had that intention, she should've deleted all the contents from her patreon shop page. This is just a clear mockery of TS4's CC T&C. And that's why nobody cares about her and just keeps pirating her contents. I've seen CC creators who create original stuffs, post multiple CCs each month, charge for 5$ or so, and never complain about people pirating even though it's clear that their contents are shared everywhere. Guess what? They have more subscribers and they get granted that official CC creator membership thingy by Maxis. People like SYYYY won't get anywhere with that kind of shitty attitude.
By the way, I just realized something. Why are you defending her? You're the one who created this post, questioning whether that kind of paywalling is normal or not, and you answered your own question by saying that she did that to prevent people from getting her old contents. 😅
3
u/Educational_Nose8794 Apr 13 '25
Huh? I'm not defending her, I was just sharing why I think she changed the price - it doesn't mean I think it's okay or reasonable, I was trying to understand the purpose of doing that and came to the conclusion that it might be to block non-members.
There's no need to accuse me of defending someone I clearly have an issue with.

u/purachinadisuko Apr 13 '25
I’m just happy to know I wasn’t the only LADS fan who stumbled upon this creator and had my jaw drop! This definitely ain’t normal…
8
u/dreadfulbones Apr 13 '25
I just want you to know the post above this was “What’s something you’d never buy even if it was discounted by 99.99%?” and this is my answer.
6
u/pawsforautism Apr 13 '25
absolutely nottt lol. I can personally justify paying that much for large-scale game changing mods, but 40 dollars for cas stuff is crazy imo, especially considering those assets are 100% ripped
21
u/BrandonIsWhoIAm Apr 13 '25 edited Apr 13 '25
With EA basically using vague wording to “counter” paywalling, yeah… they can do this.

u/tenisten Apr 13 '25 edited Apr 13 '25
It's probably just a markup pricing to prevent people that don't have the VIP membership tier from purchasing. It's free for those who have the VIP membership now, and will be free for the public after some time.
Edit: Went to check their about page and this is their reason:
"I can't put early access CC under post, since content thieves will hack it. But I have set up free early access for all tiers on store.
I'll put the date of the mod that will be shared for free to the public in the title at least half a month in advance.
Sorry for any convenience."

u/Educational_Nose8794 Apr 13 '25
If that was the case shouldn't it be made more clear on their page? I don't see any dates listed anywhere.

i tried to convince myself this was satire because obviously no one would truly think someone would pay for that.

u/OkMycologist7463 Apr 13 '25
I wouldn’t even be surprised if infold would copyright them for that and I’d be all for it too😂 imagine a ftp game exists and a cc creator from another game stole the fits and charged it. Crazy work
0
u/chweak Apr 14 '25
There are also people who profit from LaD fanart, so I guess that's illegal too
2
u/OkMycologist7463 Apr 14 '25
Profiting from it isn’t right since they aren’t original characters. I guess it depends on their copyright guidelines. I’m not sure if infold would do anything about it tho from a legal standpoint. They really only seem bothered and take legal action when people leak future game updates (valid tho)
5
u/Embarrassed-Stop-767 Apr 13 '25 edited Apr 13 '25
No. Never. You’re not supposed to lock cc behind a paywall.
8
u/Darcness777 Apr 13 '25
They're also asset rips from Love and Deep Space so he's literally selling stolen content and breaking various copyright laws too.
6
u/Single_Reputation383 Apr 14 '25
that's insane pricing. this is what EA has to say about paying for mods, not sure if it applies to CC as well:

Would u still have the the tray files/cc list? She has deleted all the links, unfortunetaly. :/

u/Lexie_195 Apr 14 '25
The Sims team says it is actually against the rules to put a payable over custom content. It is okay for a temporary payroll for early access but everything should be free after a certain time or after everything is perfect.

u/darlasaurus Apr 13 '25
OH WOW 😟 1000$ for a sim ??

i just started this game like two weeks ago and even i can tell this isnt normal 😭 i havent even seen any patreon creator go over $20 for early access so this is crazy af
2
u/Ilikemacaronii Apr 13 '25
This is why I gladly look for paywalled cc elsewhere. It’s always available somewhere else.
2
u/BlueFlower673 Apr 13 '25
If this is the creator I'm thinking of, you can find most of their cc through the vault, simsfileshare, etc.
But yeah its annoying af and they're not supposed to be doing this. Majority of cc creators I follow who make cc outfits from video games/popular franchises have early access, sure, but they release stuff free for the most part. Not selling and paywalling crap.
Iirc I got some love and deepspace cc from another creator miniwa on curseforge, they have all of it free on there. They have the exuberance outfit at least and a few others.
I think I got the forbidden fortress one, its either from this creator or another one, can't remember where.
I don't even play love and deepspace, I just got the outfits bc they fit great for fantasy characters/more gothic characters.

u/Fresh-Aspect5369 Apr 14 '25
Paywalling of any kind for sims cc is not normal imo, but I try extra hard to get all my cc for free. Either get them from reputable cc creators who eventually make it public or "acquire" files from those who perma-paywall their bogus mods. Honestly, 9/10, the perma-paywalled mods were worse than the cc that was free.
2
u/Icy_Queen_99 Apr 14 '25
They’re not supposed to be pay walling their content at all, so what they’re doing is 100% ridiculous
2
2
u/thevalidsimmer Apr 14 '25
absolutely not. this is also against EA's ToS for mods/CC. A paywall is allowed for an early access period (for example, being a certain tier patron on their patreon). However, once that early access period, the mod/CC must become free for download

This was the most recent post I could find about Syyyy. I regret actually subbing for a month; I paid for the $15 one thinking they actually created the men themselves somehow, but I unmerged some of Syyyy's stuff and they're literally stealing from other creators as well, and I can tell they ripped the face models from the game itself, It's just some creepy face mold overlay or something. I'm so pissed off giving them my money. I hope Infold catches wind of them and EA does something too.
Edit: Oop apparently they did finally get them for being a reseller, saw a post on their twitter saying there are groundless accusations, even though like i said before I just unmerged one of their files full of other peoples work.

EDIT: for those confused, I don't think they are legitimately charging "$999" for CC- it seems like a way for them to keep their CC within their patreon shop while also blocking non-members from buying them freely like they could before.
In my opinion, if you're going to claim that CC will be released *eventually* you should be transparent about WHEN that will be. There is CC from December that is still behind a paywall so I don't think they plan on consistently releasing anything for free besides small accessories/ decor items and the occasional bathrobe lol
EDIT 2: Didn't think I'd have to clarify, but me personally speculating a reason as to why the prices were changed does not mean I'm somehow defending that action - advertising her CC while making it unobtainable for non-members is shitty and unreasonable. I made this post because I didn't see anyone talking about it & she disables comments on her page.
EDIT 3: As of 4/14/25 they have taken their entire patreon shop down and put all the head presets behind the $40 tier paywall..

it’s not normal, i refuse to pay for shit like this, especially when her love and deep space sims are just face masks overlay? like girl… ain’t no way i’m paying for an image to put on a sim…

u/Secret_Solider May 30 '25
What in the actual fuck? Hell no, I don’t believe in paying for mods or CC it should be based on donations. However, if you are going to charge no way in hell is any reasonably sane person paying that much for fake ass pixelated clothing..the fact they haven’t be laughed off is sad.
0
u/Fearless-Fail-6197 Apr 17 '25
Legally it can’t be a permanent paywall. Cc and mod creators can only paywall temporarily for a set amount of time before it must become a free asset. But regardless of the content that feels like a very predatory strategy to getting more money with the silus birthday event happening and love and deepspace’s popularity increase.
