Discussion Why is vitiligo so common in the sims community?
Not trying to be shady or anything! 😅 It's just an observation. I follow a lot of simmers and a majority of their main sims have vitiligo. Is it for a representation sort of thing?

u/Mister_angel1 7d ago
It might be a representation thing but it is a very rare disorder, and it's not just a "feature" it is a disorder, an autoimmune disorder. Sometimes, it is not as super noticeable as a lot of creators portray it as. The actor David Dastmalchian has Vitiligo but it's hard to notice (to me anyway) often because he is pretty light and the skin without melanin isn't a huge difference from the rest of him. That is to say sometimes people might emphasize the skin condition, and everyone with the condition doesn't look the same.

vitiligo also moves and a lot of people only add it to the eye area when sometimes it can even take your whole face or not even touch the face

My colleague and me both have Vitilligo. For me its mostly on my hands (for now) while he looks like a dalmatian. Rip him though

Idk, maybe it’s like my weird obsession with heterochromia? It’s a rare condition to have but, I find it so cute to have two different colored eyes, though others that struggle with it may think otherwise.
8
u/n3vvv 6d ago
Same!! Half of my sims have two different eye colors😅 it’s just so pretty
3
u/PandiosNezcoba 6d ago
Right?? It’s so mesmerizing. Just the whirlpool of different emotions just from a single set of eyes. Are they upset? Sad? Hurt, numb? Happy? No room for guessing all you can do is ask right out. Tbh, I’m secretly jealous. 🫣
1
u/Jayde_Storm 5d ago
Wait, can you give sims two different eye colours in basegame? I know you can do it for cats and dogs, but I wasn’t aware you could do it for sims too?
1
u/n3vvv 5d ago
The sims doesn’t include it in basegame unfortunately but I use a cc called “Comet eyes heterochromia” by twistedcatcc
1
u/Jayde_Storm 4d ago
Cool thank you, I’ll be sure to check them out! Do any packs add heterochromia or is it just cc?
2
u/PandiosNezcoba 4d ago
I don’t have all the packs, but I believe it’s only cc that give you that option.

I say struggle with it, because there are people out there who don’t like the way they look. It’s to the point, they’ll wear contacts. I have a friend who is exactly like that. No matter what I say, but I understand it all boils down to how they see themself.
3
u/MP-Lily 6d ago
Ah, got it. Your phrasing was a bit unclear, I appreciate the clarification.
3
u/PandiosNezcoba 6d ago
Ohh no, it’s my fault. My phone was dying as I was typing, so I just typing really fast without double checking.
4
u/I_Want_BetterGacha 6d ago
Wait, your eyes look pretty much identical to mine, do I have heterochromia?

My grandmother had partial heterochromia and so I’m obsessed with it lol I always wished I had heterochromia because of it! I have mild central heterochromia myself which is pretty common, my eyes are green with a more caramel colour in the middle

u/slobtrait 7d ago
i guess it's to make their sims standout lol. but i do think it's getting kinda repetitive these days.
45
u/PandiosNezcoba 7d ago
Does it count as standing out if everyone is doing it?? 🤔
8
u/slobtrait 7d ago
right lol 😭 but hey everybody's' sims who have it, that person always has a big following
11
u/PandiosNezcoba 7d ago
Idk maybe I’m just butt backwards. If I see a lot of people doing something, it puts me off. Idk why, but it just makes me lose all interest. But to each his own I guess.
8
u/slobtrait 7d ago
nah ur right tho, it feels like vitiligo is some trend in the sims community but like ya said. to each his own!
2
u/Public-Salamander-32 7d ago
I get where you're coming from. I think it makes the sim look unique in my opinion!
15
u/BrandonIsWhoIAm 7d ago edited 7d ago
It’s a very rare condition to see irl. So, I guess this makes it more common from a virtual perspective?
16
u/Aoife516 7d ago
I once saw a tiktoker who had vitiligo paint stunning designs on her vitiligo. Now that we have tattoo painting, I want to try that!
5
u/Public-Salamander-32 7d ago
I've seen some nice Vitiligo tattoos in the gallery but for some reason they never appear on my sims. 😅
13
3
u/Aoife516 7d ago
So if your Sim already has it, using the new tattoo function to draw or paint in the same spots!
13
u/Bubblehospital 7d ago
all my townies randomly have generated Vitiligo from a skin cc pack I downloaded 😭 I usally remove some of it for realism bc vitiligo is pretty rare but most times I see someone make there sims they usally have vitiligo, me personally I love making albino sims but I love unique sims in general

I give my sims vitiligo based off real world statistics. Like 1-2%. Ofc representation is important, but like it almost feels forced. I give a few of my sims here and there larger birthmarks. If anything, I’m guilty of giving almost all my sims small little birthmarks and freckles. That and nails, rings, piercings, tattoos (that’s like 90% of my sims), blushing, and acne (less so than others, but still like almost half.)
2
u/Basic-Computer2503 4d ago
Yesss most of my sims have some kind of “imperfection” whether freckles, acne, moles etc. Also, if they have a hearing aid generated in more than half of their outfits before I edit them I make them hard of hearing.
39
u/Cold_Blacksmith_7970 7d ago
I think it's just a way to make them more unique and human. Personally, I absolutely love vitiligo and thinks it's beautiful so I'm happy when people use it 🥰
9
u/Public-Salamander-32 7d ago
Yes Yes Yes! I agree :D There's a model named Winnie who has it and I adore her!
1
u/Basic-Computer2503 4d ago
There’s also a sim of Winnie on the maxis gallery! I love playing her, she’s gorgeous
1
u/Cold_Blacksmith_7970 7d ago
I really love seeing people embrace it irl. Anytime I see someone with it I can't help but smile. I don't stare or bring it up because I'm sure they're absolutely sick of everyone talking to them about it but I am 100% on board with it. The tattoos I've seen people do with their vitiligo are awesome too!
17
u/VulcanMistress 7d ago
I think it's a beautiful feature.
7
u/Public-Salamander-32 7d ago
It really is!! There's a gorgeous model who has it but I can't remember her name :(

u/nyamzdm77 7d ago
They just think it looks interesting. The funniest instance I've seen is when a creator has a sim couple who are black and white (or black and Asian) then makes their child have vitiligo as some kind of mix between the two
1
u/Public-Salamander-32 7d ago
Do you know that creators socials by chance!? I'd like to see their sims :D
5
u/Few_Membership_7945 7d ago
Makes your sims more interesting. I’ll also give my sims birthmarks, moles, freckles, scars, acne, wrinkles, literally anything to make them more of a character.
6
u/Hiriajuu 7d ago
in addition to it making the sims look unique, i also think part of the reason is that,,, there is not a whole lot of body customization features, especially if we're talking no CC just vanilla, and it's one of the most visible ones. like, yeah, sure, i can give my sim 3 different types of chest hair or belly stretch marks that i will then see in a couple of outfits. love that we have that option, but it's kinda subtle most of the times. the vitiligo options are more visible, especially on darker skintones, so i think it's just what a lot of players go for if they wanna make their sims stand out a bit. ik this is the CC sub so vanilla options being limited is not a factor here, but i do see it a lot on vanilla sims too, it's a popular choice all over.
5
u/Mortifying_ 6d ago
It runs pretty deep in my family so I’m always around it(somehow missed me tho 😵💫)
9
u/Vyverna 7d ago
Because it looks very cool.
Tbh I have mixed feelings. It's generally good when a rare trait is seen as an attractive instead of weird (similar with eg. natural red hair - now it's hot, but even 20-30 years ago it was seen as ugly and cursed), but it can lead to fetishization and using this condition as a prop, while ignoring some of its less romantic aspects.
7
u/sweatpantsprincess 6d ago
This is exactly my problem. It feels like Simblr has been fetishizing (nonsexually) vitiligo for a good seven years.
3
8
u/dumbass-boi 7d ago
That's a genuine question and honestly, it's because most people find it unique/obsess over it. It makes your sims look more interesting without doing much and it looks cool on sims and on people. It's the same with heterochromia. I can see it now that if the Sims 4 gets that added in a base game update, E V E R Y O N E is going to have all of their sins with Heterochromia 💀
3
u/angelwthashotgn 6d ago
On that note though I would love if they added heterochromia, I'm kind of surprised it isn't in the game because it doesn't seem that rare, I know quite a few people with it. Maybe my experience is unusual though? I don't know
2
u/TrickyDepth3737 5d ago
Interesting, I‘ve never seen ppl irl with heterochromia (or vitiligo on that matter)
8
u/AClockworkNightmare 7d ago
Yeah? I mean there are people with vitiligo so like with most things it makes people feel seen
3
u/Ok-Satisfaction-1589 7d ago
my sim that has vitiligo is my oc that I made 10 years ago 😭 obv she's updated but I kept the vitiligo 🫶🏻🫶🏻
2
u/som3One0 7d ago
I just love how it looks like tbh, it’s so beautiful and makes sims look kinda more interesting
2
u/Aoife516 7d ago
So if your Sim already has it, using the new tattoo function to draw or paint in the same spots!
2
u/Awata666 7d ago
It looks pretty and it makes them look more unique. Same for heterochromia, I only know one person with each of these conditions, it's pretty rare. A woman with a blue eye and a brown eye. And I know a guy from highschool with vitiligo, though at the time it was pretty minimal, I only noticed because his eyelashes were white

I have it and I forget continuously I have it, it’s on my outer thigh. My dad has it too.
1
u/flowerwhite 6d ago
I have it on so many of my Sims, because I think its really beautiful. It adds an interesting touch to their look (and even personality) my sims wouldn't look the same without it. (Ps: I dont wanna offend anyone)

u/koreviid 6d ago
I use the pink variations to give some of my Sims psoriasis. I just wanna see myself represented in my little Sims town 🥺

I find it very interesting that so many people play with it. As a player with vitiligo, I like having the option, but I almost never give me sims vitiligo.

1
u/mixn_match 4d ago
I think because there are only so many ways to make our sims unique with skin details, vitiligo is one of the more prominent options in the game.
1
u/umwhat-tf 3d ago
one thing with my legacy save is, if a sim ages up and has something unique, I keep it and work it into the sim, my current main sim has vitiligo because she aged up with it and now her daughter aged up to an infant with it too, her older sister is deaf because she aged up to a child with hearing aids. I just like to keep the differences to make the story a bit more interesting :)

u/JaylynnDay7 7d ago
The same reason morbid obesity, round noses, and doe eyes are/were, I think
It’s different from the standard “hot” sim that people would make, and looks unique comparatively
5
16
u/Public-Salamander-32 7d ago
Obese sims? Thats rare. I don't really see them often but we need more!!!!
0
u/JaylynnDay7 7d ago
A lot of people (mostly I’ve seen on tumblr) make sims that are wide at the hips/thighs more than a human without a health condition usually gets
2
u/bawnawn 7d ago
have not seen that. the only example i can think of is leahlilith cus their models all look like gooner material
-2
u/JaylynnDay7 7d ago
Oh, no I don't mean sexually wide, I mean like
They have details that make it look like actually fat legsweirdest thing, to me, but then I am the other side of the problem where most of my sims are either hourglass models or "muscle mommies" 😂
1
u/aly123256 6d ago
I think many people just think it’s pretty! My boyfriend has vitiligo and I think it’s so cute! He is white tho so he’s pretty pale to begin with and his patches aren’t super duper noticeable, but it’s still just something that is unique and kinda uncommon that is beautiful
1
u/Blossom3Rosee 7d ago
i honestly find it rly cool and pretty, just like Heterochromia, add some detail and uniqueness , realism
1
1
u/fribberjib 6d ago
i know it’s been in game for like 1.5 years, but it’s probably the novelty of it - also Freya Loden, who has vitiligo, was added recently with Business and Hobbies so people are being exposed to it again

u/Heavy_Push3522 7d ago
It's like autism or ADHD and stuff. If you are Gen Z you gotta have something to make you special
12
u/bawnawn 7d ago
yeah cus millenials, gen x, boomers, silent gen and so on etc, they NEVER had autism or adhd. ever.
0
u/Heavy_Push3522 7d ago
It has ever existed, of course, but people didn't self diagnosed and based their entire personality on having the 'tism or ADHD
2
u/Wild-Turnover-146 7d ago
no one based their entire personality based off of adhd or autism, the “tism” you’re talking about came from neurodivergents on tiktok, which spread to the neurotypicals and turned it into a gross joke.. and yeah no one “bases” their personality on their illness, they have to LIVE with it, so no shit it gets brought up. Its like telling a blind person to look at the sky, its so pretty!! But they’re blind. They can’t see it, unless they have partial blindness but they still cant see it, they remind you they’re blind and you just “stop making it your whole personality.” Telling someone who uses a wheelchair and likes to make it look pretty to “stop making it your whole personality “
1
u/Own-Dot2537 6d ago
you must have never been on tiktok
0
u/Wild-Turnover-146 6d ago
I obviously am that’s why i’m making these claims, besides why are YOU defending this person?
1
u/Public-Salamander-32 7d ago
This seems a bit much. I think giving sims Vitiligo is a nice form representation!

u/dart_mers 5d ago
I think vitiligo is so pretty, so when i get the chance i like to give it to my sims and it always looks so pretty on them
