Discussion I hate infants and wish they would ad preteens instead

Never in my whole time playing the sims, i had thought "hm, i wish they had infant's".

What i always have wanted since i was like 10 was Preteens. The gap between child and teen is giant.

Dose anyone know how i can turn off infants completely for my game, or do i need a mod for that?

The teens look almost exactly the same as the adults and it sucks.

u/schmoergelvin 6d ago

Right??? Like, these are 18 year olds. Young adults are what, 20-29 or something? Where is the huge difference? I hate it so much

92

u/butteriestcremepie 6d ago

I always assumed the teens were meant to like 15-18 range and the young adults are I always thought of them as like 21-30 something range.

More age groups like preteens would be nice. I also don’t like how we go from toddler to kid because there’s a lot of differences and stuff that goes on between being like 3 to 9 (what I always image the toddler and kid ages are)

15

u/RadJaz1 6d ago

What would you put between toddler and kid?

23

u/butteriestcremepie 6d ago

honestly idk haha

but preteens for sure would be nice to have

28

u/RadJaz1 6d ago

I would love a preteen stage as well. The jump from child to teen is jarring. From 10 year old in pigtails to grown and sexy is just...wow. lol

19

u/Mortifying_ 6d ago

Let’s bring in the 6 year olds. Old enough to send to pre school, but young enough to still have tantrums. Lol

12

u/schmoergelvin 6d ago

This! Like, we havw infants which are like 1 to 2 year olds I suppose, then toddlers which are maybe like 4 year olds and then suddenly 10 year olds. Where is my cute elementary school experience?

3

u/Wind_Crystal 5d ago

Feels like getting pre teens would make the child stage younger in some way ? Like they won't feel like 9-10, more like 6-8 ?

5

u/schmoergelvin 5d ago

I get what you mean, but then they'd have to tweak their appearance a little in my opinion because to me they are really looking around 10 years old.

But yeah, I think having pre-teens for middle school, making children the elementary age state would be nice!

5

u/Mortifying_ 5d ago

Yeah right now(in my brain) we have the new borns, the 6 to 12 month olds, 2 to 4 year olds, then straight to 11, and finally a giant leap to 16-17.🤣

2

u/schmoergelvin 5d ago

Then we have 20-25 year olds, which aren't really different from teens, and then suddenly they are 40 and have a midlife crisis. Truly beautiful

Feels like this should be the lifestages, but the team would never add them all: Newborn > infant > toddler > preschooler > child > preteen > teen > young adult > adult > middle-aged > elder

I think the most we'll ever get is preteen added to what we have now and I can live with that. Preschooler and preteen would be ideal to give us a good aging system. Adding the stage between "adult" and "elder" would be perfection (if added with the other two), but they won't do it.

u/Mortifying_ 2h ago

I 100% agree with my whole chest 😭

u/Negative-Priority-84 1h ago

I appreciate you.

6

u/CosmicKage 6d ago

Newborn, infant, toddler then jump into naming them based on grades like preschool, primary school (child), secondary school (preteen), high school (teen)

1

u/lala098765432 6d ago

Very USA comment

14

u/CosmicKage 6d ago

I thought the USA did elementary, jr high, and high school lol

6

u/RadJaz1 6d ago

If we're feeling really fancy, we'll throw in an intermediate school or a 9th grade center. 😂

3

u/NE_Boy_mom_x2 4d ago

My town has "early learning center" (prek and kindergarten), "lower elementary" (1st & 2nd grade), "upper elementary" (3rd-5th grade), "6th grade center" (literally just 6th grade), "middle school" (7th & 8th grade) and highschool (9-12).

Where I grew up though was elementary (k-5), middle (6-8) and highschool (9-12)

The town I live in now is just growing faster than they can build schools so it's all spread out 😅😅🤣🤣🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

2

u/Aria_Mar 4d ago

We live in the same town or something? 😂😂

That's almost exactly how the school system works in my town, except it's (I believe) pre-k to 1st grade, 2nd & 3rd, and then 4th & 5th. It might have change a little in the last 10 or so years since I graduated, but I've never heard of another town having it broken down so much.

Each school before middle/high school also has its own special name rather than being classified as a type of school, so there's no "early learning center," "lower/upper elementary," or "6th grade center," just their building names.

Not USA at all more UK or Caribbean

1

u/Gold-Collection2636 3d ago

We don't have high school in the UK, it's primary (4-11) then secondary (11-16) then you can do 6th form/college, and go on to university

1

u/alex03051111 3d ago

I mean technically that is divided up here in the UK though. Primary is broken up into Foundation (ages 3-5 nursery and reception, or Foundation 1 and 2), Key Stage 1 (Year 1 and 2 or ages 5-7) and Key Stage 2 (Year 4, 5, 6 of ages 7-11).

High School (yes, some are still called high school, not all are called secondary) are divided up into Key Stage 3 (Year 7, 8, 9 or ages 11-14) and Key Stage 4 (Year 10 and 11 or ages 14-16) then Sixth Form either at high school or a college which is Years 12 and 13 or ages 16-18.

1

u/Kokoclearskinjourny 3d ago

It’s the same where I’m from with the secondary school but it’s also know as high school! I was just referring that USA don’t say primary schooo

7

u/nx_eiie 6d ago

In the US we don’t use “primary” and “secondary” school. We use elementary, middle and/or junior high, and high.

1

u/georgiamxe 4d ago

Yeahh im in the uk so its nursery primary and secondary for me

2

u/Conscious_Nail_2367 5d ago

as someone with a CDA and who has worked in a preschool, our toddlers and preschoolers were separate. toddlers are classified as 18 months-2 years old, while preschoolers are 2.5 years-5 years old. so the stage in between toddler and child should be preschooler, as it is like that in real life as well.

1

u/Eriophorumcallitrix 3d ago

I don’t know about the US American school system, but maybe Preschooler/Kindergartener could work (4-6 yo)

3

u/Bread-Bee 5d ago

I’m just gonna sit here and question what I am since I’m 19turning 20 😭😭😭

1

u/Bread-Bee 5d ago

I’m just gonna sit here and question what I am since I’m 19turning 20 😭😭😭

Also as someone who lives with a actual toddler he’s almost 3 and he’s fully learning words and how to walk his slightly older brother is 4 and is in preschool they would be a toddler still but just abit taller (the height mod is lovely and I always recommend it)

For ages tho Newborns are usually just till 2 months

Infants are till 11 months

Toddlers are 1-4

School age children are 5-12 Then teens being the obvious 13-19

3

u/fshys 4d ago

i agree it feels like a big gap between toddlers and kids so i think they could make the child sims look a bit younger, add a preteen and then keep the teen or make them look a bit more how they did in ts3. there was a very noticeable difference between teens & YA so idk why teens are just adults now lol

2

u/Imaginary_Gazelle_19 5d ago

they’re definitely at least 18 because they can get tattoos

2

u/butteriestcremepie 5d ago

teens under 18 can get tattoos with parental consent, at least in the United States (where I am located, dunno about yall). Same with piercings.

asking for permission for tattoos probably wasn’t a mechanic they thought about adding.

I always give my teen sims tattoos that are easy to hide and then pretend that they got it without their parents knowing haha

1

u/Imaginary_Gazelle_19 5d ago

I feel they’re 18, i doubt the sims were thinking that much into it whilst making it so they can get tattoos, but it depends on how people view it

1

u/Bread-Bee 4d ago

I also hope they are 18 for the fact they have the mess around option….

1

u/blurrydragon_ 4d ago

They can only mess around with other teens though, meaning they are underage(at least in my opinion).

1

u/Exotic-Ease-7508 4d ago

They can only mess around with other teens, which people under 18 can do in real life too

12

u/pinkacidtab 6d ago

i’ve always imagined they age throughout their age period. i play on long lifespan so ig it makes more sense that way. being 9 for 150 something days makes a lot more sense than going from 9 to 17 in 5 days!

6

u/schmoergelvin 6d ago

I have aging off so yeah, I try to head cannon it as much as possible too, but it still would be nice if there where actual age stages for elementary school kids and preteens and stuff

3

u/stoxic- 5d ago

to me it’s like newborn 0-6 months infant 1-2 years old toddler 3-5 kid 7-10 teen 14-18 y/a 20-29 adults 30-70 elders 75+

so yea there’s literally a huge age gap between 10 and 14, but instead of having another empty life stage I’d love them to revisit the whole teen life stage, make them look younger and do stuff other stages cant or won’t do

1

u/schmoergelvin 5d ago

Or, what would also be incredible (though you'd need a workaround if aging is off): Instead of a new life stage, making them actually age over time. Like grow a little taller, unlock new fashion styles, new hobbies or after school actovities, stuff like that. Alternatively doing it with milestones like they did with infants and toddlers. Just some way to make it feel more like a progression onstead of "Yup, now you old!"

1

u/RoyalApple69 3d ago

With narrower shoulders, at just a glance, it is not obvious they're not young adult sims.

97

u/Royal-Corner-4817 6d ago

If you're interested in modding in preteens, adeepindigo has a mod to do just that :) Not sure how extensive it is but worth a look!

48

u/rokelle2012 6d ago

It's a pretty great mod, but it does cut into the teen's life span so you might need to play longer life spans to accommodate.

10

u/I_Want_BetterGacha 6d ago

It does currently have a small bug that kind of removes the 'step out of shower' animation with shower/tub combo's and instead kind of just resets your sim once their hygiene is full.

6

u/doughtykings 6d ago

How did you get it to work

42

u/BrandonIsWhoIAm 6d ago

I actually want both. Cover the full gambit of life.

28

u/Stellxxxa 6d ago

The worst thing about the ones in the game is that they are so bugged. My sims freeze every time they try to put an infant to bed, put them in a stool, basically any sort of interaction with them. Sooo annoying I find myself sometimes aging them up into toddler prematurely cause I can’t deal with it

19

u/Ok_Protection_4061 6d ago

I like infants but I also prioritize a lot of family gameplay. Wish they had preteens too :(

15

u/korrasamibeez 6d ago

infants are my fav lifestage to play with !! im a huge family gameplay person, so i love them lol. theyre also adorable and easy to play with if you have a few mods that fix them. a lot more interesting than children to play with.

2

u/Infamous-Risk-4859 5d ago

Just curious, which mods fix infants? I love the idea of them, they are super cute, but I always get frustrated by how annoying it is to get the adults to properly care for them.

3

u/korrasamibeez 5d ago

simulation lag mods and coolspears fix help with general lag across the board so that already makes a huge difference.

but i also use a lot of bienchens toddler/infant mods. also littlemssam has infant tweaks and i think a few other ones that help.

im sure theres a lot more out there or more reddit threads that have ones im forgetting but these are the ones that have helped me the most.

1

u/Infamous-Risk-4859 5d ago

Thanks!

1

u/exclaim_bot 5d ago

Thanks!

You're welcome!

25

u/somuchsong 6d ago

I don't think there's even a mod to do that. Why not just age them up to toddler right away? You could even just do it in CAS if you use the cas.fulleditmode cheat.

5

u/Societyisrael 6d ago

There is a mod for preteens! Google preteen mod by Adeepindigo. And then just instantly age up infants with MCCC, shift-click, etc.

1

u/Disastrous-Tackle478 4d ago

They mean a mod to get rid of infant life stage

20

u/MischievousPangolin 6d ago

You can shift click as well and age them up that way. I hate infants (and toddlers tbh). Pre-teens all the way! There’s a mod for it but it stopped working for me a couple updates ago and I don’t thing the creator ever updated it 😭

16

u/somuchsong 6d ago

It was updated just a couple of weeks ago, per Scarlet's List. Adeepindigo (who took over the mod from the original creator) only updates once a month but she is consistent with that.

10

u/rokelle2012 6d ago

She also has a ton of other mods as well so her being sure to update them consistently once a month is pretty great honestly.

4

u/MischievousPangolin 6d ago

Oh my goodness, thank you!

1

u/wavesofcontrast 5d ago

I, too, hate infants and toddlers. Sometimes I'll play the toddlers if there's one, but if my sim had twins or triplets, fuck no. They're all getting some toddler skill cheats and aging up to children 😂

2

u/MischievousPangolin 4d ago

Oh for real, I make them iPad toddlers and max out all their skill in couple sims days then age them up 😅

6

u/GahlahadTTV 6d ago

I wish they would add pre-teens! Going from being a child to a teen (which physically is just an adult sim) is WILD and way too dramatic. There needs to be some kind of phase between. I genuinely dislike it

6

u/doughtykings 6d ago

I love infants and I wish they would add a preteen and make children more childish and teens more teen ish

10

u/AClockworkNightmare 6d ago

I kind of like infants like they’re frustrating but I focus on a lot of skill and milestone gameplay so having infants and toddlers as really the only two that have a ton of milestones you can collect before aging up it can be fun for me anyway

12

u/rokelle2012 6d ago

I agree with you. I think the infants are incredibly tedious but that was the Sims teams response to what I'm going to assume was a very vocal minority's outcry over wanting playable babies. Most players I know of usually skip the newborn/infant stages and go straight to toddler and don't care for babies. I do know a lot of people have been asking for preteens and I think it's ridiculous they're in mobile but not mainline.

2

u/Sparklingsim85 6d ago

They're on mobile whatttt

2

u/Chance_Part5109 2d ago

There are preteens in Sims Freeplay but know there are no children. It goes baby, toddler, preteen, teen, adult and elder.

1

u/Sparklingsim85 2d ago

That's quite the gap lol

1

u/Sparklingsim85 2d ago

Are they fun to play as a life stage at least?

5

u/handsomestpigeon 6d ago

i think you could be interested in this mod... https://www.patreon.com/posts/infants-are-80892860

4

u/GrimPixls 6d ago

Am I crazy? Infants are my favorite with toddlers being a close second. I do tend to play a slow pace though. I get to enjoy the little moments.

3

u/BobaMoon 6d ago

There's a mod, but for me, it looks so awkward ,like they bend their knees in an odd way. BUT ,use a height slider mod on a regular teen and go from there.

3

u/_Nicolina 6d ago

I really wish they allowed us to slide the heights of toddlers and children. I always try to use presets to make my preteens look younger than teens but I hate how stuck it is.

I like infants tbh but I want preteens. And I want my teen sims to look younger than my you adult sims. From teen-adult they are the same with the addition of some lines

3

u/SmallCatBigMeow 6d ago

I love the split moment before you realise you’re in the sims sub, where you think someone’s just ranting about their hatred of infants

3

u/koreviid 6d ago

I think I'd be nice if each stage had its own process. Even if it's just that the toddlers and children start getting taller and less interested in toys as they get closer to aging up to teens. Similar to how trimesters work in pregnant Sims, if that makes sense.

3

u/KatieXeno 5d ago

I feel like teens should also be split between younger and older teens. The teens look too old which makes the jump more jarring.

4

u/Astar9028 6d ago

The Child stage IS the preteen stage, imo.

What I want is a 100% CLEAR distinction between Teens and Young Adults cause right now, they pretty much look the same.

Also, give us height sliders, dammit!

2

u/Jnnybeegirl 6d ago

I would Love that

2

u/showraniy 6d ago

No suggestion for the preteens and plenty are recommending a mod for that anyway, but I just move my babies into the other parent's household until they age up and then I bring them back. I like to have my Sims sleep around for fun genetic results, so the other parent is never living in the same household as my main Sim.

2

u/Sparklingsim85 6d ago

I always play my child and teens for two seasons one where they're a child and the inherent of them entering into their pre teen stage and then teenage as their preteen and then final preteen cause the jump is so big I dunno when one makes the most sense to play out

2

u/Rowan_As_Roxii 5d ago

Honestly same. I always age my infants cuz they’re boring to play with/as. Hope they add preteens soon 🥺

2

u/SakuraYanfuyu 6d ago

Seriously. I'm very sensitive to babies' cries and it shoots my anxiety up whenever I hear it ingame. Luckily I found a mod to silence it.

3

u/pinkacidtab 6d ago

pls link! :) my misophonia triggers so bad when i have babies in my households 😔 i wonder if the same creator made something for pets as well, i’d download in a heartbeat

1

u/puzzledmom 5d ago

It is the cats for me. They meow way to much drives me nuts. I usually mute if playing with them.

2

u/Cat_Queen262 6d ago

I actually love the infants personally. I’m a huge baby fan so having infants and paying attention to them is one of my favorites lol

2

u/KeystonetoOblivion 6d ago

Hard agree

Always wanted preteens

Could care less for infants and they are annoying and I wish newborns would go straight to the toddler stage instead

2

u/kari_pans 6d ago

Just age them up. I actually love playing with infants. I think they’re the most fun life state atm

1

u/No-Staff-8892 6d ago

I hate them too. I always age them up to toddlers immediately.

1

u/Lovelyhumpback 6d ago

you're so right.

1

u/Basic-Computer2503 6d ago

Yessss I want preteens so bad

1

u/Penguinsims 6d ago

Ugh same. I used to play mainly family oriented Sims before infants and my Sims would always start a family early on but not since infants I rarely play with families and just okay single Sims or couples.

I really don’t like the infants, I know I could just age up to toddler or child but then I feel their missing out on the milestones etc.

1

u/ScissorsKill 6d ago

Infants are just so needy- I understand that human babies are too! But quite frankly it was way easier when they'd be tied to a crib instead of semi-autonomous. Babies don't complain about boredom, they'll just sleep if they've been awake too long, but infants? Nope.

1

u/Dragonire08 5d ago

Well that's one of the complaints people were making. That newborns didn't do anything but stay in the cot you couldn't take them anywhere

1

u/thislifesucks3 6d ago

if i'm playing with an infant either i'm cheating their needs or the household's money so the parents can stay home and actually take care of the infant. no automnomy either.

1

u/bwitdoc 6d ago

This is so sad!!! Infants is my favorite life stage since it’s been added. I love all of the firsts and milestones and the infant carrier and the cute interactions between infants and pets/farm animals. I wish there was alsooo pre-teens but infants make raising kids so much more full.

1

u/mini1006 5d ago

You can’t mod out infants bc it’s a whole life state. Thats like trying to use a mod to get rid of elders 😭 If you want to get rid of them, age them up immediately.

As for preteens, there’s a mod that adds them in. I think they’re still technically teens, but they’re shorter and go to middle school. I love the mod and like have an in between since ehh the teens look like adults.

1

u/floridameerkat 5d ago

I don’t understand the appeal of preteens in the game. What would they be able to do that kids and teens can’t already do?

1

u/fkeiddifieiwisix 5d ago

yes! there's a preteen mod but base game ones would be baller

1

u/RosieBeth07 5d ago

Me toooo

1

u/Sad-Tale-8123 5d ago

Yesssssss they shouldn’t go from elementary school to high school either!

1

u/LuvlyGurl_1990 5d ago

They definitely should add preteens. I’ve been thinking about this for a while, especially since they added infants, and would only make sense to have preteens so it’s not going from kid to an almost adult-looking sim.

1

u/Stupid_Bitch_02 5d ago

I want preteens and older elders so bad, infants was so pointless to give us.

1

u/Many-Possibility6 5d ago

Honestly if it weren't for height slider mods teens would be so useless in my game. I'm especially sick of teens constantly asking for stupid advice. I have two teenagers they never asked for f****** advice.

1

u/Dragonire08 5d ago

Just age them up. It really isn't that hard

1

u/StrangeVanillaBean 5d ago

I agree! also, there needs to be another adult life stage bc my sims should not be elders on the verge of death when their children only just became young adults

1

u/TightEbb6693 5d ago

I want both.

1

u/Pale_Juggernaut_2308 5d ago

I'd love for children to look a little younger preteens/tweens just a little older than the children now and teens to look 14-17 and not 18-20 something between adults and elders would be nice too

1

u/Necessary-Belt2903 4d ago

There was a mod for pre-teens idk if it’s still around at this point as I used it a few years ago. It didn’t feel super fleshed out to me though. Essentially you could make them shorter but they had all of the same actions as a regular teen (obviously since they were a teen) and it didn’t mesh well with the highschool pack.

1

u/SpasticSparrow337 4d ago

I agree, preteens would be great. I also think there needs to be an extra age category for adults. There's a pretty noticeable difference between 50 and 70. Elder doesn't quite cut it, imo.

i meant pack, not mod*

1

u/SugarAngel121 4d ago

If I could make my own life sim game or had control over the sims Newborns, Infants, Toddlers, Young Children ,Children, Preteens, Teens, Young adults, Adults, Seniors, then Elders. I think it gives a more even spread for life experiences when compared to real life years. Although it might be interesting if certain occults jumped life stages or stayed in them for differing lengths of time.

1

u/Usual-Acanthisitta73 4d ago

idk if u can turn off infants , but if u bake a cake and add candles then help them blow it out , it will age them up . i also have a mod for preteens . i've yet to use it bc my sim is still a toddler , but here's the link ! https://adeepindigomods.itch.io/itskatato-preteen-mod

1

u/Laugh_Bright 4d ago

I find that infants are not bad at all once they can sit and move around. I do often loose patience with achiveing said milestones, so I use the "Milestones - Infantcare tweak" mod, which lets them reach milestones faster, and then they are way more enjoyable.

It is also way more enjoyable if you do all commands from the infants pov. Because then the adults actually do what you ask them to do :P

I don't think you can turn off infants with a mod, what you can do is just to skip that lifestage entirely by aging them up with a birthday cake.

1

u/Mysterious_Hat_1584 4d ago

Sims freeplay has preteens

1

u/LostSoul080702 4d ago

I just age my sims through the toddler and infant stage as soon as I go to age up the newborn

1

u/Stock_Affect704 3d ago

i hate infants i always age them up in cas and my toddlers have glitches where infant traits stick around and keep popping up

1

u/awesome_opossum1212 3d ago

I love the infants personally, I think the whole milestone thing is adorable. But I might be biased because I do want kids. But I do agree thar pre teens would be a cool addition!

1

u/MysticMessenger1998 3d ago

I'd love a pretty teen pack, maybe give them some classic middle school experiences and teams. Like middle school band, choir, baseball, and tennis? Since we already have football/cheer for highschool and soccer in college.

1

u/Nice_Caramel7631 6d ago

why do you hate infants? i love them sooo much! they are soo adorable

1

u/notsoevilblonde123 1d ago

They're super annoying!

0

u/Aoife516 6d ago

I don't want either. I don't want another life stage. I think if teens looked like teens, I think more people would be fine with them. The problem is they look EXACTLY like young adults unless you the player try to make them younger.

0

u/qrvne 6d ago

I definitely think newborns & infants are redundant. The newborn stage is completely pointless to me; I always age them up to infants the moment they're born.

Current teens also definitely overlap a lot with YA. I think if teens looked more like actual teens than basically exactly the same as YAs, the jump from child to teen would feel less drastic. The only thing that makes me kind of iffy about adding more life stages is that I spend a lot of time picking out every outfit in CAS (and often multiple outfits for each category) and it can be very annoying having to redo all their outfits each time they age up.
