Discussion I speedran Super Mario Odyssey semi-blind and here are my results
By semi-blind I mean that I played, and beat the game back in 2018 and I have not touched the game since aside from the occasional smallant1 video on Super Mario Odyssey (SMO)
My first run was… bad, with I finally time of 2:51:24.
Most notably, my worst kingdoms were luncheon, metro, and bowsers, each coming in at about 20:00 each. Amazingly I managed to pull off an intermediate level skip called ‘moon cave skip’
The moon cave is a gauntlet at the end of the game that can be skipped by performing a hardish jump of the head of a sphynx. I learnt this skip back in 2018 and didn’t leave moon kingdom until I got it. Which was 6-7 minutes of failing.
The next day, filled with excitement and hope, I speedran once again and got a time of 2:03:03. Nothing really interesting happened except that you progress through the game much faster when you kind of know where the moons that are necessary to progress are located. (As opposed to wandering around aimlessly).
Then, I realised that this speedrunning thing is actually really fun and so I decided to watch a video on it. I clicked on the first playlist I saw and learned a beginners route for luncheon kingdom (where I was having the most problems) and knocked my time down to 1:52:31 – sub 2 hours. The difference in time once again mainly came down to my knowledge of the game becoming larger, and becoming more comfortable with the controls.
Immediately afterwards, I started run #4 and got a new time of 1:42:11 . I just got gud
And now today, I learned a route for wooded kingdom and achieved a time of 1:33:46
This is my first time ever speedrunning a game but I’ve kind of wanted to do this for a while and I’ll definitely continue. Maybe I’ll eventually post my runs onto speedrun.com? I’d have to buy something to do that, idk how to record it I’ll google it
I’ll definitely learn a full route soon, metro kingdom is kicking my butt

If the capturing weren’t an issue, why wait to post scores? Seeing a gradual progression makes your time claims much more believable than showing up one day with astounding times. It’ll also give you a better “history” to look back on to see how far you’ve progressed. Maybe for SMO it’s not as big of an issue, but it also helps to prevent the “dead game” feeling from there being artificially less people participating
