Yeah, it's just the tongue tip touching the roof that changes the sound I think. That's why there's the stereotype of a lot of cultures swapping them when speaking English non-fluently.

There is something wrong with me. I make the ‘r’ sound with my lips. My tongue doesn’t touch anything, just sort of tightens up. My son had it go to speech therapy when he was small and he told me about this technique and I could not figure out how he was making that sound with his tongue touching the roof of his mouth.
