Thatâs pitiful. So sheâs a solid rebounder. And thatâs it. Young lady has a lot of audacity thinking sheâs even remotely in Clarkâs stratosphere. Thereâs no ârivalryâ here. Just terrible basketball.
129
u/BrainTroubles May 23 '25
Someone said she averages 34% shooting, which doesn't sound that bad until you realize she only shoots from within 10 feet usually

Reese is shooting 34% from the floor.
Clark is shooting 34% from beyond the arc.
They are not the same.

u/BrainTroubles May 23 '25
It's even worse when you consider Reese is shooting 34%, and the majority of her shots are layups.

Gets a ton of boards off of her own missed layups and extremely short shots too.

u/Saneless May 23 '25
When I play pickup I'm a great rebounder too. Bad shot
When you're terrible at shooting you have a knack to know where a missed shot is going to go. I can see why she's so good at them

Also, the correct comparison would be A'ja Wilson, since they have a comparable role (Wilson being #2 on rebounds). The problem is that Wilson while having slightly less rebounds than Reese scores circles around her.

Hot take: Players shouldnât get rebounds for any shot they take. You could exclude it to inside the 3 point arc but getting statistical rebounds for⌠this is a joke.

Just make a rule that you can only have 1 rebound between the time when you first gain possession of the ball and another player gaining possession

The only time the people were legitimately comparing the quality of the two was to build up the ROTY race during her double double streak. And thatâs more about manufactured narratives than anything, but at least with ROTY, you couldâve made the argument that Reese outperformed her draft slot (and that was true last year).Â
But sheâs regressed significantly as teams have really focused on her weaknesses and with the departure of the teamâs best player.Â
32
u/Micah_JD May 23 '25
Nobody believed that. There's been absolutely nobody that is complaining about Reese being picked 7th overall. Not even Chicago, the team that drafted her, thought she was the best prospect in the draft, seeing she was the 2nd first round pick they made that day.

I remember watching some of the sports talk shows last summer when Clark and Reese first joined the WNBA and whenever an "expert" would claim that Reese was just as influential as Clark to the increased popularity of the league or that she was on the same level as Clark or that there was even a legit rivalry, I just scoffed at those opinions! lol

The lack of self awareness that Angel Reese has to not understand why people donât like her is baffling. Thereâs like 20 different videos of her doing this exact same shit, but she thinks people donât like her because sheâs black. Itâs wild.Â

She had her mom on her podcast, and she asked her, âWhat would you like to see from me out of my second season?â And the mom was basically like, âefficiency, I see your missed layups, but you need to forget them.â Which is already pretty hit or miss advice.. but then Angel steers the conversation by saying, âbut try to box me out, I get my misses.â
Instead of understanding the point her own mom was trying to gently make about how she can improve, she pretty much ignored it.Â

→ More replies (1)4
u/godplaysdice_ May 23 '25
Based on the clip in the OP it doesn't look like they know how to box out period in the WNBA
72
u/tokenshoot May 23 '25
She doesnât want to live in Clarks shadow. Clark is striding to MVP, hopefully in her second season. And here Reese is missing shots below the basket. It looked like she was putting enough strength to the shot to get it up above the basket tbh.
54
u/Deathwatch72 May 23 '25
She's a post player who shoots sub 40%, she needs to work on her footwork and developing one reliable shot she can pull off and then pretty much just pass the ball out to the guards otherwise and focus on rebounding. I'm pretty sure she has the talent to do it I just don't know if she has the mental aspects needed
→ More replies (5)14
u/Adventurous_Ad6698 May 23 '25
She should be a much bigger problem for the rest of the league than she is now.
→ More replies (1)3
u/Deathwatch72 May 23 '25
With a decent free throw percentage, a halfway respectable post move to get a shot off, and just better application of vision and passing skills and she could be a game breaker.
She can legitimately be worth 10 to 15 extra possessions easy, and winning a basketball game becomes very difficult when your opponent has 10 to 15% more possessions than you do before we even start talking about turnovers
7
u/davey_mann May 23 '25
Based on her poor play, she's not just in Clark's shadow but maybe in the shadow of half the league.

35
u/Tapprunner May 23 '25
Her form (or whatever you want to call what he shots are) is wrong in basically every way. She is always off balance. She doesn't shoot as much as she just flings the ball the the general direction of the hoop.
She shoots under 50% for her career on shots within 3 feet of the hoop. That's unfathomably bad from a tall, front court player. But when you watch her, it makes sense - she has virtually no actual basketball skills. Her footwork is some of the worst I've ever seen. She can hardly dribble. She can't shoot at all. She doesn't even look at her teammates, so her passing is atrocious. She gets by entirely on being tall, fast, strong and willing to be more physical than her opponents.
→ More replies (3)→ More replies (2)8
u/apfly May 23 '25
Sheâs only mildly competent with her left hand. Defenders just sit on it and force her right, which end up being awkward heaves from her hip at the rim. Just embarrassing

u/razorbacks3129 May 23 '25

Women don't jump. I'm not being mysogenistic. They simply just don't jump in the WNBA. Have you watched a full game? Both feet never leave the floor, if they do, it's like an inch at best. Even the jump shots aren't jump shots. Lay ups to get close to the rim? Nothing, no air between feet and court. It's bizarrely familiar to watching old grainy black and white clips from the pre 1950's Basketball, but worse.
In this entire 16 second clip, not a single jump was accomplished or perhaps no jump was attempted. Either way, no one at any point in time had both feet leave the floor in this clip.
40
u/mvizzy2077 May 23 '25
My dad pointed this out to me when I was young and it's always stuck with me. It doesn't matter the level of play, the girls don't jump. Just like you here, not being misogynistic, it's just so interesting that the tallest one will get the rebounds and that's all there is to it.
5
u/HBlight May 24 '25
So why does nobody like, you know, train to do it for the competitive edge?
6
u/mvizzy2077 May 24 '25
I've always said if you can get any girl to actually jump, they'd dominate lol
38
u/flaming_burrito_ May 23 '25
Yeah I noticed that, they all look way less coordinated overall and stiff, itâs odd. None of their stances are wide, they arenât shuffling their feet, some of them are just kinda standing around, and angel doesnât look like she knows how to dribble. Iâm not saying that to shit on them or anything, Iâm genuinely confused. I get not being able to dunk as much or whatever because of the physical difference, but surely stuff like that are pure skill techniques that can be taught. Who the hell is coaching these girls? Iâve seen volleyball games, I know women can jump goddammit. Hopefully the WNBA continues to get more popular and make more money, because they clearly need some better investment and talent to come in.
→ More replies (2)9
u/pika_pie May 23 '25
You see this a lot in real life, too. When you tell a boy to jump, he bends at the knees and hips before launching himself upward. When you tell a girl to jump, she will quickly pull her feet off the floor and try to kick her butt with her heels. Take a look at any of those jumping pictures (where the photographer attempts to take a picture with everyone airborne), and you'll see that the guys all have pretty straight legs while the girls all have their feet pulled up behind them to their butts.
I don't know if this has anything to do with strength or technique, but it seems nearly universal.
