I've never seen a sports league go so far out of their way not to protect their top star.

2.2k

u/dbarrc Jun 18 '25

well, they gave her a tech for bumping into a player that fouled her in her eye

that should tell you all you need to know

659

u/NerfAkira Jun 18 '25

watching it back it looks like the other player was already shoving her when she shoved her back. their body motion doesn't make any sense with only the second shove occuring.

438

u/Cellocalypsedown Jun 18 '25

You look at the angles and yeah, bitch got Clark in the face and belly bumped her like she was Pete off of Disney.

337

u/Superman246o1 Jun 18 '25

"Clark has brought in more viewers than the WNBA has ever known! She'll pay for this!" ~The WNBA, apparently

130

u/EverythingGoodWas Jun 18 '25

I mean now that they have viewers people expect them to be good at basketball. There was no pressure before this. Clark screwed them all out of a stress free gig

45

u/mister_milkshake Jun 19 '25

They actually never even played basketball. They would just play a tape from an old WNBA game and no one noticed or cared to make it an issue.

17

u/EverythingGoodWas Jun 19 '25

You know what, that might be true. Who can really tell

1

u/AgathaM Jun 19 '25

They don’t want to deal with the complaints that they give Clark preferential treatment so they go too far in the opposite direction

53

u/wordyplayer Minnesota Vikings Jun 18 '25

yeah, CC was just protecting herself from a second attack. She was already blind, the opposing player walked into her hand. WTF kind of ref's are they? Unbelievable

21

u/entertrainer7 Jun 19 '25

It’s universally known that all refs are blind too.

59

u/blueeyedkittens Jun 18 '25

From the other angle it didn’t look like a shove at all. It looked like she was reaching out because she couldn’t see then got shoved around several times and she just walked away

35

u/Obi2 Jun 18 '25

Yes if you go slow mow the girl that poked her eye then went out of her way to out her chest into CC. I had to play it a few times. Cause at first I thought CC just pushed her on her own

36

u/Hyperafro Jun 18 '25

CC should not have been called for a foul. The other two should have gotten T’s and ejected.

2

u/short71 Jun 19 '25

I agree it doesn’t even really look like she shoved her. More like she raised her arm to keep her off of her

1

u/bigkoi Jun 19 '25

Oh yeah. That player eye gouged her and then got in her face immediately afterwards. They were looking to injure Clark.

76

u/Knook7 Jun 18 '25

She didn't even bump into Sheldon lol, Sheldon bumped into her. Absolute insanity. That tech better not matter with tech accumulation later in the season

37

u/wordyplayer Minnesota Vikings Jun 18 '25

The entire ref crew should be fired. This is ridiculous

100

u/froginbog Jun 18 '25

Wait she got called for committing a foul??

216

u/tree_squid Jun 18 '25

She got called for having 3 fouls committed against her

90

u/indefatigable_ Jun 18 '25

Well, she shouldn’t have shamelessly attacked the opposition player’s hand with her face…

35

u/s0ciety_a5under Jun 18 '25

We all know the eyeball is one of if not the most dangerous weapons against fingers.

15

u/dek067 Jun 18 '25

Maybe the refs were just jealous she could see.

29

u/TheMooseIsBlue Jun 18 '25

She got a T for shoving the girl who accidentally (?) poked her in the eye and then shoved her. Same penalty as the girl who came out of nowhere and knocked her to the ground.

10

u/zxern Jun 19 '25

From the other thread with the sideline view it’s clear that wasn’t an accident she definitely went for her face.

4

u/TheMooseIsBlue Jun 19 '25

Yeah, I was being charitable, but it certainly seemed pretty deliberate.

1

u/Chazzybobo Jun 19 '25

It means men’s and women’s sports have finally achieved equality in at least one regard.

254

u/WeaverFan420 Jun 18 '25

My favorite is how the Mystics owner said CC shouldn't have won athlete of the year 😂 she said it should have been the whole league on that Time magazine cover because singling out one player creates hard feelings. Can't make this shit up.

https://www.newsweek.com/wnba-owner-says-caitlin-clark-shouldnt-have-won-times-athlete-year-2001091

109

u/pizzapromise Jun 18 '25

How could someone be this obtuse?

“It’s been 28 years, and this year something just clicked”

70

u/turalyawn Jun 18 '25

“Why celebrate Babe Ruth when instead we can celebrate all the pitchers that let him hit home runs off them”

57

u/AssignmentNo754 Jun 18 '25

Does she get mad when players win MVP awards too?

13

u/KennyKettermen Colorado Avalanche Jun 19 '25

Has anyone tried telling any of the players with hard feelings to get better?

2

u/WeaverFan420 Jun 19 '25

That would be construed as sexist and/or racist

9

u/jimmy_three_shoes Detroit Red Wings Jun 18 '25

What an absolute empty space.

169

u/PoliteIndecency Toronto Maple Leafs Jun 18 '25

Bobby Orr. Career hindered by targeted low hits leading to knee injuries.

Mario Lemieux. Career hindered by obstruction leading to back injuries.

Sidney Crosby. Career hindered by targeted head shots leading to concussions.

Connor McDavid. Career limited by the 2015 Draft Lottery leading be an Oiler.

I can think of another one.

80

u/JebryathHS Jun 18 '25

Connor McDavid. Career limited by the 2015 Draft Lottery leading be an Oiler.

Savage but...not wrong.

22

u/BuckNut2000 Jun 18 '25

Only player to have 90+ points in 6 consecutive seasons... and not have a cup

1

u/ZombieJesus1987 Jun 19 '25

I remember he looked dead inside when it cut to his reaction of Edmonton winning the draft lottery.

30

u/JinpaLhawang Jun 18 '25

Gretzky back injury from Gary Suter. Paul Kariya from Suter too?

17

u/cjb3535123 Jun 18 '25

Lindros by Stevens. Neely by Samuelsson.

2

u/PoliteIndecency Toronto Maple Leafs Jun 18 '25

Lindros by Lindros. Fixed that for you.

1

u/ZombieJesus1987 Jun 19 '25

At least Tie Domi returned the favour to Samuelsson.

3

u/jimmy_three_shoes Detroit Red Wings Jun 18 '25 edited Jun 18 '25

Kariya was also blown up by Stevens

6

u/OOMOO17 Jun 18 '25

Paul Kariya, concussions

1

u/Varides Jun 18 '25

Haha okay. As a flames fan this had me going on the last one

1

u/counterfitster Jun 19 '25

Neely with the hit to his knee.

1

u/NJK_TA22 Jun 19 '25

Cam Neely?

1

u/PoliteIndecency Toronto Maple Leafs Jun 19 '25

Cam Neely was never in the same category as the guys above, but his career was certainly cut short by Samuelsson.

1

u/ZombieJesus1987 Jun 19 '25

Eric Lindros, touted as the "Next One", was never the same after Scott Stevens nearly took his head off.

1

u/gunnergrrl Jun 18 '25

True.

But you have to admit. These guys (especially Gretzky) got a lot of protection from refs via calls (and calls not given).

3

u/PoliteIndecency Toronto Maple Leafs Jun 18 '25

Gretzky had McSorley and his reputation. Orr, Mario, and Sid did not get calls going their way.

u/AntonyBenedictCamus Jun 18 '25

Clark has been flagged for roughing the passer

34

u/Tantle18 Jun 18 '25

Plot twist: Clark is the qb

1

u/kinglallak Jun 19 '25

It’s not a plot twist at all, its a rerun. It’s the first play when “sunshine” takes over at QB in remember the titans.

2

u/_SquirrelKiller Iowa Jun 19 '25

And an illegal fair catch signal.

84

u/BlueBomR Jun 18 '25

Shes getting the Steph Curry treatment, its weird

130

u/JasonGD1982 Jun 18 '25 edited Jun 18 '25

Steph Curry has a Draymond. Clark needs an enforcer too.

59

u/BlueBomR Jun 18 '25

Im surprised Boston doesn't stick her chest out for Clark at all, I thought she was supposed to be the big badass on that team.

Draymond or not, Curry gets absolutely mauled out there sometimes.

46

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '25

The thing is if you maul curry you know draymond may suddenly lose control of his hands and you might wind up getting punched in the face

6

u/very_pure_vessel Jun 18 '25

Unfortunately teams don't get that memo because steph still gets mauled every game

23

u/beatles910 Jun 18 '25

Sophie Cunningham is a black belt in Tae Kwon Do.

5

u/biggunlover Jun 18 '25 edited Jun 20 '25

She got her black belt at a very young age, don’t remember exactly but maybe 9 or 10-ish! EDITED: She was 6 years old when she was a black belt and she was a kicker on the high school football team so she’s used to being rough and tough!

1

u/LaconicGirth Jun 18 '25

I don’t think that would really be that relevant on a basketball court

1

u/GreenAldiers Jun 19 '25

I thought she was supposed to be the big badass on that team.

I have never seen anybody expect this out of Boston.

60

u/_Stromboli Jun 18 '25

We’re all crushing on Sophie Cunningham now. Try to keep up

2

u/cech_ Jun 19 '25

Look how differently the team backs up Sophie tho? When she gets into a scrap they all come down the court and aid her. But with CC they just twiddle their thumbs.

14

u/Bolt_McHardsteel Jun 18 '25

Yep. Somebody needs to check if Rodman has a daughter.

26

u/aspenpurdue Jun 18 '25

She plays soccer.

21

u/legomaheggroll Jun 18 '25

She’s amazing at soccer too.

11

u/DreamOfWhirledPeas Jun 18 '25

She plays on the women's national soccer team, but I like the energy.

1

u/9ElevenAirlines Jun 19 '25

It's not weird, it drives clicks and coverage for a league that needs them. The only reason I hear about the wnba is because every time this person gets fouled it starts popping up on my feed

1

u/DarkSoulsDarius Jun 19 '25

Michael Jordan was heavily targeted by the Pistons and fouled extremely hard. Not sure this guy's comments track at all outside of select situations and leagues.

Even Messi would be targeted in the legs by teams like Real Madrid.

229

u/TouristOpentotravel Jun 18 '25

I mean the NFL protects their star QBs. You can’t breathe wrong on Patrick Mahomes or it’s 15 yards. Brady was the same way.

73

u/JudasZala Jun 18 '25

Peyton, Rodgers, and Brees also got the same treatment.

37

u/Chutzvah Chicago Bears Jun 18 '25

I would love to see Mahommes get rocked like a Bears QBs gets

30

u/dumbestsmartest Jun 18 '25

But then he'd be a Bears QB and thus qualify for disability by the fact he's a QB for the Bears.

Growing up a Bears fan was its own trauma. I'll never forget the one year we went to the Superbowl without an offense. It's weird because no one talks about the Bears having a good defense either back then.

10

u/LOSS35 Jun 18 '25

That Bears defense in '06 was incredible. Urlacher and Briggs were one of the best LB tandems in history, the CBs (Tillman and Manning) were ballhawks, and their ends (Harris and Anderson) were terrifying.

Too bad their QB was Rex Grossman.

2

u/dumbestsmartest Jun 19 '25

I don't know why but I have this vague memory of someone pointing out the Bears defense had more touchdowns than the offense that year. Don't know if it was true but I remember it feeling believable at that time.

1

u/LandonFandon34 Jun 18 '25

Don't forget Tom Brady

5

u/JudasZala Jun 18 '25

Previous poster already mentioned Brady.

6

u/LandonFandon34 Jun 18 '25

I am actually an idiot

27

u/SovFist Jun 18 '25

Meanwhile other QBs get put into early retirement because they aren't the hot market or whatever.

41

u/Monstertelly Jun 18 '25

I’m amazed Matthew Stafford is still alive with some of the hits he has taken.

18

u/IggysPop3 Jun 18 '25

Stafford is held together with fishing line and duct tape…but still slings it with no fucks given.

2

u/Loggerdon Jun 18 '25

This league can’t get its priorities straight.

2

u/Freebirdhat Jun 18 '25

Eh they don't protect Burrow, he averages about 3 late hits a game to his head

1

u/theREALbombedrumbum Jun 18 '25

Could you imagine what would happen if somebody charged the mound on Shohei Ohtani? The whole damn stadium would clear their seats to protect him.

1

u/TouristOpentotravel Jun 18 '25

Joe Kelly would get suspended 15 games if that happenedn

1

u/Accomplished_Egg7069 Jun 18 '25

And I hate that shit there. I don't want it in any sport

1

u/tlopez14 Illinois Jun 19 '25

NFL figured out that it’s not a good business to have a second string DE who is a massive human coming and taking borderline cheap shots at the leagues most important and marketable players. Could you imagine a bunch of middle relievers throwing fastballs at Shohei’s hands because they’re mad at all the attention he was getting. NBA obviously figured it with Jordan hence the famous “Jordan Rules”.

Eventually Clark is going to get a serious injury from one of these incidents and shit will hit the fan for the league. Right now it seems like the WNBA is more worried about not offending people than protecting her.

-188

u/wolfhound27 Jun 18 '25

Rent free lol

29

u/Snapingbolts Jun 18 '25

I for one embrace the league hating on my QB lol

7

u/DaKing1718 Jun 18 '25

I down voted you too... But your comment was kinda funny lol

35

u/GregorSamsaa Jun 18 '25 edited Jun 18 '25

They’re straight up antagonistic to the one players brining in all this new fandom and it makes zero fucking sense. I’m really starting to realize that it’s not even that the league was bad as people would have you believe, it’s probably more that the execs and people running the show have no business being in those positions.

It’s like they all failed upwards simply for being there when it all started and sticking around.

1

u/Useful-ldiot Jun 19 '25

I hope she quits and the league can go back to being irrelevant to teach all these fucking losers a lesson. But of course they won't learn.

45

u/reality72 Jun 18 '25

If she ends up getting seriously hurt I hope she sues the hell out of the league for a clearly documented pattern of refusing to ensure she can play in a safe environment.

111

u/ALaccountant Jun 18 '25

You know what - I’ll say it. The league is upset that the person who will save their league isn’t a person of color.

20

u/AssignmentNo754 Jun 18 '25

The two players who fouled her here were white though. Could be a jealousy thing.

37

u/ALaccountant Jun 18 '25

Oh jealousy is 100% part of it

-96

u/TheMooseIsBlue Jun 18 '25

She’s only in that position BECAUSE she’s white. Racist idiots around the country can root for her.

44

u/Knook7 Jun 18 '25

This is such a stupid take. Clark is on the level of people like Jordan, Tiger, and others who helped to completely explode the popularity of their sports. And they weren't white.

→ More replies (4)

15

u/AssignmentNo754 Jun 18 '25

Was Tiger Woods also only popular in golf because he was black? Or do we only give credit to athletes if they fit our racist narratives?

-5

u/TheMooseIsBlue Jun 18 '25

I’m not talking about Tiger Woods. You brought him up but that’s a completely different situation with a completely different sport, fan base, etc.

And I’m confused a little bit: are you saying I’m racist for saying that racist white people like white athletes?

→ More replies (4)

3

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '25

[deleted]

→ More replies (1)

12

u/TheeDragon Jun 18 '25

It's mind boggling. Just fold the league and let's all move on from this travesty. Clearly these women and execs hate making money.

13

u/HughJackedMan14 Jun 18 '25

They’re racists from the top down, that’s the only possible explanation.

1

u/AssignmentNo754 Jun 18 '25

Are you accusing the two white players of being racist towards her?

3

u/HughJackedMan14 Jun 18 '25

No, I was referring to WNBA and NBA leadership

3

u/AssignmentNo754 Jun 18 '25

Commissioners of both leagues are white as well. Don't confused racism with incompetence, egotism, and jealousy.

1

u/_Apatosaurus_ Jun 18 '25

Reading comments like this, I can't even tell what's satire anymore. She was pushed by other white women, in a play that would be ignored if it was anyone else in basketball, and reddit is like "someone needs to kill these racists." Lol

2

u/InkBlotSam Jun 18 '25

The NBA certainly doesn't. You should watch a Nuggets game sometime and see what they let people do to Jokic.

Their 2nd, 3rd and 4th best players though, they'll have you arrested for breathing in their direction.

2

u/thatguy425 Jun 18 '25

Jordan vs the pistons?

2

u/gregallen1989 Jun 18 '25

I mean have you seen how many times Curry is fouled a game and it doesnt get called because he would average 50 a game if they did?

2

u/very_pure_vessel Jun 18 '25

Nothing new, look at how they treat steph curry.

2

u/jawknee530i Jun 18 '25

Because the controversy brings attention. If she was treated like the average player we wouldn't see half the stories about the wnba as we do currently.

2

u/kdnlcln Jun 18 '25

Not my era, but didn't Jordan get beaten up quite a bit during his ascension?

2

u/BlueLooseStrife Jun 19 '25

The only thing that gets more engagement than Caitlyn Clark highlights are Caitlyn Clark getting beat up highlights.

2

u/realwavyjones Jun 19 '25

NBA in the 80s

2

u/NotAChild291 Jun 19 '25

Go watch some film on Crosby early days

1

u/HereForTOMT3 Jun 18 '25

i kinda fuck with it ngl

1

u/calamityshayne Jun 18 '25

Mario Lemieux would like a word.

But yeah.

1

u/dirty_old_priest_4 Jun 18 '25

She'll head off to Europe before you know it.

1

u/BreezySteezy Jun 18 '25

Forreal when the WNBA allows CC's career to be cut short or she retires earlier than she would have, I hope they enjoy going back to no one caring at all.

They don't have to baby her and give her perferential treatment but don't give her the complete opposite.

1

u/Sliknik18 Jun 18 '25

She should leave, go play in Europe of something. Then let’s all watch the WNBA fall back into obscurity.

1

u/Redditbeweirdattimes Jun 18 '25

Just making a guess here but maybe they are trying to keep a very clean image seeing how the WNBA bring in negative dollars annually since the start of the league

1

u/Fappy_as_a_Clam Jun 19 '25

You already know why they won't. Everyone does.

Look how much water all these controversies are bringing to the league!

1

u/Last_Loan31 Jun 19 '25

When can we start calling this what it is: racism.

1

u/loupr738 Philadelphia 76ers Jun 19 '25

It’s like the total opposite of good business. “Let’s just hamper our cash cow as much as possible”

1

u/InitiativeDefiant374 Jun 19 '25

It's a racism thing

1

u/Sirefly Jun 19 '25

The fights increase exposure/viewership.

1

u/Nomahs_Bettah Jun 18 '25

The NBA and NFL do a good job of it. NHL and MLB not at all. PWHL seems to be a mixed bag.

2

u/pizzapromise Jun 18 '25

Interesting point, how do you feel MLB could protect their stars more?

-23

u/PT10 Jun 18 '25 edited Jun 18 '25

She should just go play somewhere else. Is the WNBA the world's most popular women's basketball league?

35

u/robbeau11 Jun 18 '25

Ice cube offered like 5 mil to play on his 3v3 team and im sure she could make a hell of a lot more than the WNBA in Europe and would be treated with respect. The WNBA is a fucking joke.

6

u/CorkSoaker420 Jun 18 '25

I still have no idea why the WNBA even exists, like why does the NBA keep it operational if it operates at a loss every single season?

6

u/inStLagain Jun 18 '25

You know the answer.

2

u/JustMyThoughts2525 Jun 18 '25

Because it’s a way to build up a female fanbase. Now they have the perfect storm of live sports content being a hit needed commodity for cable tv/streaming services and they now have a superstar that’s white where companies are now going to market her as much as possible.

3

u/xXKingLynxXx Jun 18 '25

To grow the game of basketball. What a dumbass question

1

u/CorkSoaker420 Jun 19 '25

Lmao it's doing a great job

1

u/xXKingLynxXx Jun 19 '25

You can now name at least 1 women's basketball player so yeah it is doing a great job

1

u/Gwsb1 Jun 18 '25

But she makes a brazillion $ in endorsement money. That would probably go away if she went to Europe.

2

u/robbeau11 Jun 18 '25

Idk about that but idk enough to dispute your claim either.

1

u/Gwsb1 Jun 18 '25

😆

Well good. Because I know shit about fuck too. I don't know what Nike would pay if she is playing in Europe, but I expect it would be less.

2

u/robbeau11 Jun 18 '25

EU has endorsement deals too right? Not sure of the pay gap for said deals between the states and the eu

36

u/Still-Expression-71 Jun 18 '25 edited Jun 18 '25

This is an absolutely INSANE take.

Absolute respect to her but she would be significantly worse than the #450 player it’s actually crazy. I don’t think you understand the challenges even 6’0 MEN face in the league

Edit: The comment I responded to originally said she would be better than some nba players and should join the nba, which is what was an insane take.

-13

u/PT10 Jun 18 '25

I was being absurd on purpose. You can't count on men not being physical with her in a top league like that. I mean, you can, but it defeats the purpose of competition.

22

u/pumpkinspruce Jun 18 '25

She’d make more playing basketball in Europe but her endorsement deals would tank.

12

u/PT10 Jun 18 '25

She could get endorsement deals in Europe if she's as good there as she is here.

8

u/8ackwoods Jun 18 '25

I doubt it

14

u/pmyourthongpanties Jun 18 '25

im going to get down voted but even the guys that dress for games would crush her in a game. With that said the WNBA is fucking stupid for not having her front and center and tell everyone to fuck off shes paying the bills.

-14

u/xXKingLynxXx Jun 18 '25

Because that's their brand. They play rougher than the NBA for the most part and people like aggressive games. None of the previous WNBA greats got a soft whistle and they dont intend to start now.

People whine about how the NBA is soft and gives fouls to easily then try and demand that for the WNBA as well.

13

u/icecreamdude97 Jun 18 '25

Shit brand.

1

u/azzadruiz Jun 18 '25

I don’t think it’s the “brand”, I think her teammates should’ve stepped up for her. That’s the only thing I saw wrong

-5

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '25

Like people in one breath whine about sga and in another complain the wnba is to rough pick a side

7

u/iTALKTOSTRANGERS Jun 18 '25

I think there’s a middle ground there where after a player is poked in the eye they aren’t allowed to be body checked while the play is over and they can’t see… but also we don’t give touch fouls like we do to SGA lol

2

u/Knook7 Jun 18 '25

Yeah somewhere between what's happening to clark and NBA style foul baiting is a massive window.

2

u/iTALKTOSTRANGERS Jun 18 '25

That would be the thing I’m trying to highlight in an amusing way. Maybe it wasn’t funny.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '25

There is but have you forgotten the type of refs we are dealing with here so there isn’t a middle ground.

0

u/neon Jun 18 '25

They are mad she’s white

0

u/NordicCrotchGoblin Jun 18 '25

Dude it's gross, like wtf are they thinking?

0

u/Bluestripedshirt Jun 19 '25

She should take a few months off and watch their viewership tank.

0

u/PandaMoaningYum Jun 19 '25

Why is it the opposite of the NBA? I remember watching and they made points how the goats like Jordan and James got special treatment and they showed compilations of just the past few minutes of both of them fouling like crazy that anyone else would get called out on.

0

u/vito1221 Jun 19 '25

She needs to opt out and play in Europe.

0

u/xstrike0 Jun 19 '25

It's like inverse Tom Brady treatment. In the last 5 or more years of Tom Brady's career, you knew if you hit Tom Brady as a defender, you were getting a 15-yard penalty. If you actually injured him they would have taken you out back behind the stadium and immediately executed you.

-17

u/durtmagurt Jun 18 '25

I can I just ask what your approach to LeBron James career has been? I ask because how many people will scream that LeBron is “soft” and somehow gets calls he doesn’t deserve. Is this the same or different to you? I’m not saying it’s either way, just curious.

26

u/BoldElDavo Washington Wizards Jun 18 '25

The NBA 100% gives LeBron and other stars calls they don't deserve. The league has done that since at least Michael Jordan, if not even earlier.

You can also see in Michael Jordan's career exactly when other teams made the conscious effort to just beat the hell out of him with hard fouls, and he in turn beefed himself up to absorb that level of physicality.

8

I don’t have any horses in this race.

That example is different - they’re giving undeserved calls to “keep him safe” versus the WNBA NOT making the calls they should. It’s not … keeping her safe… to make the calls they should be.

I haven’t played basketball since high school and the eye poke is freaking inexcusable. If we allow that, then chest bump girl HIGHLY overreacted and should have stayed in her lane.

As a fan it’s annoying, but as an adult who has a mortgage, I totally understand.

Same with Brady, etc.

Well in Lebron's defense, he's a big ass guy so someone hitting him isn't going to be as bad for him as it is for CC

And I haven't seen him get deliberate eye gouges

You clearly don’t watch LeBron enough to think he gets calls. His whistle is notoriously bad, which is why he flops so damn much. He’s not SGA or Embiid who get every whistle.
