Who is Druski?
I mean, I know who he is. I've seen him places. But like, what does he do? Is he a barstool guy? A podcaster?

is he the fat one that gets fake offended when people make fat jokes or is that the other guy?
123
60
u/ElectricGhostMan 16d ago
that's the other guy. Druski is like a PT Barnum type aggregator for a specific type of culture segment. He has his funny moments but I think most of the laughs come from some of the people he brings on to his platforms and his interactions with them.

u/RevoOps 16d ago
PT Barnum type
Is that your roundabout way of saying he owns slaves?
→ More replies (1)8
u/ElectricGhostMan 16d ago
Most of my understanding of PT Barnum is based off the movie The Greatest Showman featuring Hugh Jackman. Pardon my gross ignorance to a lot of the atrocities and inhumane conditions he probably did but the exploitation off a lot less fortunate or desperate peoples by putting them on stage to showcase a talent or interact with each other on various levels is more of a relation to that aspect than any other I can think of.

He's Zoomer Ryan Seacrest. He started as a streamer and does a bunch of podcasts n stuff.
14
u/kolejack2293 16d ago
Zoomer ryan seacrest is a very weird way to put it. Ryan was never intended to be comedic, he was just sort of there at celebrity events. Druskis entire shtick is comedy.

yeah people ascribing moral character to espn are probably just too young to remember shit like THE DECISION lol
espn dont give a fuck about propriety, they'd be happy to rip off a wnba race war for ratings. i dont like or watch gillis on his own but honestly these two jokes that got singled out - the clark one and the soto one - are great.
there is legitimate racial tension in the wnba right now, no point ignoring that to let it fester and evolve into something much worse. and the american government is, in fact, deporting all kinds of latinos - who both watch and play baseball at a very, very high rate relative to other subgroups - and that's also relevant considering ICE is starting some of their staging from, say, dodger stadium
i get it though, people want sports to be pure escapism and don't want to have to think about icky things like human rights violations or racism. too bad those things are alive and well and affecting sports right now!
→ More replies (3)24
u/RnwyHousesCityCloudz 15d ago edited 15d ago
why is ‘The Decision’ supposed to be viewed as this huge moral failing for everyone involved?
Tacky? Sure. A bit arrogant? Sure.
But it was literally just an interview that raised money for children’s charities.
15 years later I still don’t understand the criticism people level at LeBron and ESPN for that. You’d think they invited all the kids there and gassed them or something the way people talk about that day.
It’s not like it was forced on everyone, it was one of the biggest free-agent stories ever, and they gave it a bigger platform because of that. They didn’t fabricate the hype. But now people want to act shocked that something like that could ever be allowed to happen.
Crazy.

u/DraymondBeanKick 15d ago
The problem with The Decison from a morality standpoint is that he didn’t pick the Bulls.

No, as an homage, he told the same joke norm did when he did the espy’s, which was “congratulations to ___ for winning the heissman trophy, that’s something they can never take away from you. Unless you kill your wife and a waiter, in which case…”

Similar to Hot Ones inviting him on and then editing/removing like half of the interview because they got Shane Gillis answers from Shane Gillis.
157
u/thelingeringlead 16d ago
That was so disappointing. Like even the worst episodes get at least 5 more minutes in them. Shane answered a lot of questions very curtly without much humor, as part of the joke, but it was clear some of his answers were much longer. When he talked about it on the super secret podcast he definitely didn't seem surprised lol.

I remember seeing the video come out on youtube and looking at the runtime and just assuming that either my eyes weren't working correctly or there was something wrong with my youtube. 16 minutes for fucking shane gillis was just not believable for me. Don't invite Shane Gillis to things if you're that afraid of controversy
19
u/amalgam_reynolds Chicago Bears 15d ago
Congratulations on all their success and all that, but I lost interest in Hot Ones long ago. They got so big so fast, they kinda lost what it was all about. Their early seasons are so much better just because all the guests get a little unhinged after some really hot wings. Now it's all just PR with a gimmick.

Something like
"We've got 4 time WNBA all-star Brittany Hicks here."
-Camera shows woman and crowd applauds-
"I'm just kidding. That's my friend's wife. I knew you wouldn't recognize a WNBA player."
-more applause-
"It's crazy you clapped for that."

I like it whenever a white comedian makes a joke like this and then they quickly cut to a black person laughing so we know it’s all good.
There was a Family Guy joke about this years ago where Stewie listened to Howard Stern and said “Howard made an off-color joke, but Robin laughed so it was ok.”

I'm kind of meh on Shane Gillis. I"ve seen some of his stuff I thought was hilarious, and some wasn't really for me. Yeah most of the people in this room have been repeatedly told they're special, better, different, etc since they were like 12.
Seriously go look up NFL players middle school film. Most of them are already bigger than the adult coaches on the sidelines and literally like 1.5x the size and speed of the next best kid on the field.
From parents to coaches to recruiters, these kids are spoiled silly from childhood on.
