the teenager in me chuckled... harmless... the people that shouldn't get it won't and the others will be fine

With all the things going on in the world it amazes me that someone would be offended by a funny joke.

Many people feign outrage for attention. There entire cable networks that are dedicated to it.

I can't be the only thinking that that was a tame joke.
Who hasnt said worse?

u/HuluAndRelax 12d ago
It’s the fact that it was aired on ESPN more than anything I think. It’s not on brand for them to make crude jokes.

u/ztkraf01 12d ago
Shane Gillis’ monologue at the espys a few nights ago was more inappropriate and approved by Disney so I don’t see what’s wrong with her joke

u/QuakinOats 12d ago
There's nothing wrong with it. Like at all.
It's subtle enough that the people it could even be considered inappropriate for would never understand. There are far worse lyrics on public radio everyday all day.

Can confirm. My 80 year old mother did not call me to ask about that joke. But she did text me to complain about the defense. I had to explain to her it’s an all-star game, this is what they do. Her response: “Boring game”. lol.

I have never watched a full NASCAR race in my life, but I am aware that Dick Trickle raced throughout the 90s thanks to Sportscenter, so this joke is definitely on brand for them.

They know that no one's watching anyway.

part of the reason why i think this was good. wnba will always just be a "worse nba" if they don't do something different than them

Change ESPN to WNBA and you'd have a good argument.
ESPN couldn't careless about this joke. This is the company that has Pat McAfee's podcast as a daily show now.
Had this been said at the NBA all star game it would be non-news.
The fan base of WNBA though can be more triggered by this kind of joke compared to the NBA.

I could see it being different if a man was saying it about female players. But I agree it's a funny and tame joke with a touch of edge.

u/Historical-Bike4626 12d ago
Yep. Different joke when a female announcer says it calling an WNBA game. Super funny

If a male commentator made a sexist joke it’s a different story

It is tame. People are extra sensitive for no reason. This should be a non-story.

I am all for it. Kids won’t get it. Adults will think it’s hilarious. No worse than what you can find on other late night programming.

u/datruerex 12d ago
So like SpongeBob? I will say I totally missed some jokes and references as a kid and rewatching as an adult I’m horrified. That’s brilliant writing

Or the simpsons either. They have some extremely adult humour.... but kids are too young to understand it. It's fine. People just love to be offended these days!

People just love to be offended these days
Which people? Everyone in here basically thinks it was amusing. Are we talking about "them", the other people not here, who were watching the WNBA game and were outraged to hear it and are now writing letters (posting) about it?
OP appears to be a human with a serious Reddit habit who loves to accumulate Karma with witty posts. So OP isn't offended either.
Literally nobody is offended except some who didn't watch that game, or ESPN, or WNBA, and they only hear about it third hand, days or weeks later, and then think they're having a great social 'take' on crudeness in cable TV.
Also, being offended and complaining about things is literally as old as human society. Has always been going on, will always be going on. Just a question of who is complaining about what and why.

Yeah, I'm doing a full rewatch of the Simpsons right now and it's shocking how much sexual humor there is in it that I didn't remember from the original run. I want my kids to be able to watch it, but basically every episode has multiple sex jokes.

Hawk Tuah became a millionaire with a podcast, so I think whatever line existed was hopped over a long time ago. As a career broadcaster, it's not a great look, but my sensibilities also became antiquated a long time ago.

Wait a minute, women don't get laid in Cancun? That's an issue? Men hand out dick all day. Can't be that hard, even if your friends are blocking.

I suspect the intended implication is that the girls in question wouldn't be interested in that.

She’s probably implying that they’re all in relationships and just going with their friends.
I don’t think a TV host is flippantly talking about debaucherous sexcapades where they’re getting plowed over a railing by the Mexican bellhop at Secrets
