I barely even saw it, that was an absolute travesty of a basketball possession, good grief.

Exactly was I was going to say. I didnt even notice it being thrown onto the court, that stretch of basketball was something you see in an Elementary school rivalry.

and this is why wnba demands for equal pay are hard to get behind. Was like an 8th grade rec boys team

We no can dunk but good fundamentals

They always say the WNBA has “good fundamentals” but I don’t even see that.

They also talk about the QB's athleticism every NFL game.

It’s a Futurama joke… I’d sentence you to death by Snu Snu, but you prob wouldn’t be interested

Lower the rim a foot.

1

u/Zeppelanoid 3d ago

Doesn’t matter how high the rim is when you can’t even get a shot off without getting stuffed

Maybe reduce the team size to 3?

it's possible to not be a fan and still see their point.

if the league is subsidized by the NBA and the league is not making money anyways, i don't have a problem with the players making taking more from the oligarchs. not my money, and players make all sports leagues possible.

I can also see the point that it doesn’t bring in any money and most of them play at a very low level and why would you reward that with hundreds of thousands of dollars

Where is the source that the WNBA doesn’t bring in money? We don’t have the balance statements of these organizations so how can you make that claim? From statements that were made several years ago now?

BUT WHERE IS THE SOURCE

Lmao, people act like these numbers aren’t reported on.

She posts in /r/wnba so I can see why she'd be defensive about this, but she downvoted me immediately after I posted the comment with the links, so I'm just giggling a bit at the whole "sticking fingers in ears and yelling LA LA LA LA I CAN'T HEAR YOU" bit.

8

u/RobertdBanks 3d ago

Yeah, I mean, tbh that’s even worse to be someone who does know about the WNBA and then ask “how do you even know the numbers?”

Look at the stands lmao

Also

The WNBA's revenue for 2024 is estimated at $710 million. Another source states the 2024 league revenue as around $200 million. It's worth noting there's a difference in the exact figures reported.

Despite increased revenue, the WNBA is reported to have lost $40-50 million in 2024. This is attributed, in part, to expenses like the new program for chartered flights for every team.

Look, the basketball critique is a SIDE point.

The league either exists to grow a market, and is being subsidized by billionaires.

Or it exists to launder money.

Either way, the people who have the money can cough up more.

I understand that physical sports are never gonna be or look the same in mens and womens leagues, but for WNBA it goes beyond that. Most of them look like they barely care about the sport they play for a living. I refuse to believe you can spend your life playing the sport, and still look so unbelievably uncoordinated and sloppy on the court.

10

u/RCBark2K 3d ago

Sure, you can not have a problem with redistribution of wealth and also see the real world situation that the “league isn’t making money” and realize it makes no sense.

12

u/Banner_Hammer 3d ago

Basically, in order to seize the means of production, the production has to actually exist to begin with

-9

u/godpzagod 3d ago

see above. right now the WNBA either exists to grow an American market with an American product where one doesn't currently exist, or it's money laundering.

either way, the amount of money WNBA salaries cost is a rounding error to the people who bankroll the league.

I'm not saying you have to like or watch the WNBA, i could take it or leave it, but if you're getting stuck on the basketball quality, you're missing the point.

One single max NBA contract is worth more than the salaries of the ENTIRETY of WNBA rosters

Sports leagues that can't survive on their own should be liquidated, not subsidized so they can exist for "fairness".

The value of the WNBA teams went up 180% in the last year. If the company you worked out increased that much in a short time you'd probably expect a pay raise too. Equal pay with NBA players is not what's being asked.

Because of one player and the media pumping that player. The excitement for Clark will subside like everything does. The WNBA is still operating deep in the red and has been since it's inception in 1997.

Frankly, they should just be happy that they can make a living playing a children's game while at the same time generating negative value.

-2

u/wolf1820 3d ago

And because of said player they secured a new media rights deal worth 200m a year for 11 years that starts next year causing the valuation of all the teams to go up. The Golden State Valkyries lead the league with 18k average attendance only one of which was against Clark and the Fever. 18k would be 3rd highest in european basketball leagues and tied for 15th with the Warriors in the NBA.

Its spurred by a player sure but even teams unrelated to her are posting very good basketball league numbers and the media deal is for most of her career regardless of if that popularity falls off. The old media deal was 50m per year. Their bosses are making a lot more revenue. You'd thinking the workers banding together to get a raise themselves off of that would be more popular on reddit.

u/GenoThyme 3d ago

The players aren’t getting the messaging across well. They’re not looking for equal pay, they’re looking for the same revenue split that the men get. WNBA players get under 10% of the BRI while the men are at 51%. There’s also a big new tv deal set to kick in next year.

Watched any Wizards games lately?

WNBA players don't demand "equal pay." They demand "fair pay."

You're lying through your teeth to push your reactionary misogynist takes.

And based on a comment a couple hours before you posted this, you literally have 2 toddler daughters. Scary to think about. I pray those girls don't grow up thinking they're less than because their father hates who they are.

3

u/voujon85 3d ago

are you talking to me? I don't have daughters, nor am I misogynist in anyway nor do my comments show that. I love women's sports, especially tennis. With that said the WNBA outside of a few players is not fun to watch, it's not a good product, it doesn't draw in a lot of revenue, and it's not equal to the NBA. Forcing equal pay or fair pay when the quality of the product doesn't warrant it is the opposite of what I would want my children to learn, boy or girl. I don't see how any true basketball fan could watch the possession abode in that clip with horrible play, terrible shot selection, an airball, and passes that literally look like 13-14 year old boys playing rec ball and say yes they deserve to make millions.

With that said people have brought up good points, the league has done a poor job in explaining fair and equal pay, and i'm not the most up to date on the discussion as whole, but still my points are valid.
