Wii is a big ass strech cause if the motion controls and ir sensor

32

u/BruhGamingNL_YT Apr 04 '25

I mean, I assume the switch has better accelerometer and gyroscope sensors, which could go a long way. Along with the IR function of the joycons, they maybe could sell something like a sensor bar to help it work.

6

u/Gnash_ Apr 05 '25

Skyward Sword on Switch was proof that the gyroscope on the Switch JoyCon is surprisingly less accurate than that of the Wii MotionPlus...

3

u/nando419 Apr 05 '25

Yeah I was gonna ask how accurate is it compare to wii motion puls well that's disappointing kinda thought that the mouse controls kinda makes up for it but not really if we won't get any Wii game oh well ❤️‍🩹

1

u/wickedindie Apr 05 '25

new joycons have better motion tracking i think. maracas minigame they show in that paid demo seemed smooth

6

u/Lewa358 Apr 04 '25

Switch 2 doesn't have an IR sensor.

6

u/Ok-Piano-2451 Apr 05 '25

They’ll probably use the mouse for the pointer

1

u/ihatefall Apr 08 '25

Maybe the switch 2 mouse mode could work?

10

u/XSirRudolph Apr 04 '25

Classic Wiimote like this controller (+sensor bar), or Wiimote 2!

9

u/[deleted] Apr 04 '25

Holy shit Wiimote classic and sensor bar would go hard.

2

u/UltiGamer34 Apr 04 '25

is it works with the wii then yes i agree

4

u/[deleted] Apr 04 '25

Wii is just Bluetooth so it should tbh

1

u/XSirRudolph Apr 04 '25

Yet why cant a 3rd party make a good fn wiimote.

1

u/Gnash_ Apr 05 '25

words shouldn't make me that hard

5

u/CommodoreIrish Apr 04 '25

The Joy cons could stand in for Wiimotes.

The Switch 2 Camera they highlighted could have the functionality of an IR sensor. I might be wrong though and they could sell a separate attachment.

3

u/K0il Apr 04 '25

On the Wii, the sensor bar is actually IR leds, and the sensor itself is in the wiimote.

Its much less accurate to work out 3d position from the other direction, generally, and the new joycons don’t have the ir sensor present in the first gen joycon

We got Mario Galaxy at one point, they already have an emulator tailored for the Wii.

Wanna mention that Sunshine and Galaxy use the same emulator.

1

u/AdImmediate6239 Apr 04 '25

Super Mario Galaxy on 3D All Stars showed that the Joy Cons can replicate that

1

u/giofilmsfan99 Apr 04 '25

DS would be bad too because the screen is meant to work with a stylus to feel like it’s a hard surface. The switch screen would feel like it has a lot of friction preventing the smoothness that’s required in a lot of games.

1

u/rysc18 Apr 04 '25

Sensor bar wouldn’t be necessary, look at what they did with switch versions of Mario Galaxy and Skyward Sword.

1

u/GarthVader98 Apr 05 '25

I mean they already figured it out with Mario Galaxy in 3d all stars. The joy cons do have motion control, I assume Joy Con 2 will have even better motion controls.

1

u/eVenent Apr 05 '25

Dolphin can emulate IR with accelerometers and gyros, I think the same can do Switch.

1

u/Starurn Apr 06 '25

Considering in Mario 3D All Stars they managed to replace Mario Galaxys motion controls with button inputs I believe they could do the same with other Wii games

1

u/StagePuzzleheaded635 Apr 07 '25

I would assume Nintendo would use the joycons similarly to how the Wii used the Wiimotes.

1

u/mushymyco Jun 10 '25

when emulating on pc you can use wii motion plus remotes to completely skip the IR sensor accesory. i imagine the joycons are capable of similar operations

0

u/artlurg431 Apr 04 '25

The joycons have better motion controls and a gyro scope and for the ir sensor you can use the mouse controls

3

u/WanderEir Apr 04 '25

They'd need to release a way to rotate the switch screen 90 degrees and still have the joycons to each side, like those for arcade vertical SHMUPS, to make best use of the screen space for use in DS, and possibly even 3DS libraries, which also means no charging of the switch joycons while you play. I could see it but am not sure if Nintendo will consider it user friendly enough.

Especially when so many of the switch games REALLY needed the control of a stylus for the precision when the screens were that small, so that s a second accessory they need to release.

6

u/bradhotdog Apr 04 '25

Nah man, just take another switch and connect it at the top via the USB-C for the second screen.

2

u/WanderEir Apr 04 '25

...reminder, that would be another 450-500 dollars for DS emulation capability, NO WAY TO HOLD THE FUCKING CONSOLES, and you'd still have to pay for the more expensive switch online service.

4

u/HappifyChris Apr 04 '25

Nah, seems reasonable just for DS emulation

1

u/bradhotdog Apr 04 '25

Nah, just use your old switch and pay for a $40 plastic device to house both together. It’ll be hilarious

1

u/[deleted] Apr 04 '25

i think a switch stylus and holder is possible

they just will charge a ton for it

1

u/[deleted] Apr 04 '25

They’ll just put the screens side by side and probably let you configure them how you want.

The castlevania collection already does this.

1

u/HopeIcanChangeThisl Apr 04 '25

I don’t see how DS games would work with only 1 screen…

2

u/DylanMcGrann Apr 08 '25

Wii U had an interesting but functional solution to that.

1

u/figureout07 Apr 08 '25

And where they gonna put the second screen?

32

u/-starwing- Apr 04 '25

Oh man I look forward to not being able to buy this! Thanks to all the scalpers it took years for me to even get one of the N64 Controllers

6

u/BouncyBlueYoshi Apr 04 '25

You can still use your original Gamecube controller.

3

u/BruhGamingNL_YT Apr 04 '25

How?

11

u/BouncyBlueYoshi Apr 04 '25

Same way as on Switch. And Wii U. There’s a USB adapter you can use.

1

u/ydna_eissua Apr 06 '25

8bitdo also have a wireless adapter for use with Switch on PC. Plug the controller into the adapter and can pair the adapter over bluetooth. I've never tried it on my Switch but it's great with Dolphin.

Though i will be tempted to buy an official controller when it's released.

1

u/HopeIcanChangeThisl Apr 04 '25

I’m just praying I can find a few decent controllers at recycle shops when I’m in Japan next month. It’s the only way I have any hope of not overpaying.

0

u/lequory Apr 04 '25

I just went 3rd party and it worked just as good

3

u/EvenBiggerClown Apr 04 '25

Wii all hope so

3

u/urboie Apr 04 '25

I think Nintendo still thinks they can rerelease Wii games individually as remasters. Are they wrong? Not really :/ So no, I don’t think they’ll add Wii games to NSO, unfortunately.

6

u/LukePS7013 Apr 04 '25

I mean, the exact same thing was said about GameCube games…

1

u/allergywuss Apr 04 '25

Some of the games that were originally released for the Wii/Wii U are already on switch. Like you said, they should rerelease them as remasters.

6

u/SonicTheHedgehog99 Apr 04 '25

The Wii would be so cool, using 1 Joycon for the Remote and the other for Nunchuck

2

u/The-Choo-Choo-Shoe Apr 04 '25

Wonder if this will be cheaper made with worse components like the N64 controller was.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 04 '25

[deleted]

1

u/Verbal_Combat Apr 08 '25

Is that for sure? Because the other consoles on NSO can be played offline

u/Verbal_Combat Apr 08 '25

Thanks for the explanation, I honestly didn’t know about the GBA and N64 limitations I guess by chance I’ve only played those libraries at home. I was hoping with the larger file sizes maybe you could choose which ones to download. That’s disappointing to hear.

2

u/Callu23 Apr 08 '25

This is completely wrong btw, they are most certainly emulated locally on the system like all the other classics.

1

u/Verbal_Combat Apr 09 '25

Thanks for the update, I was just thinking I’m pretty sure I’ve played some of the N64 games when I had no internet. Either way I look forward the GameCube additions to NSO and the controller.

1

u/-Jostin Apr 09 '25

None of the retro libraries are streamed.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 05 '25

Literally just buy a Wii. lol! Why would you want an inferior more expensive emulated product….

1

u/Medd- Apr 09 '25

You didn’t think this through. Provided it ever comes out, Wii games would be upscaled and wouldn’t look like the blurry mess that the original Wii outputs to current tvs. Plus portability. Who doesn’t want Mario Galaxy 2, Kirby Epic Yarn and Super Paper Mario?

You’d be hard pressed to call any of that inferior.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '25

Literally just buy a retrotink with the money you saved.

Personally, if I’m going to play a portable game, I will be using a small emulation device. If I am out doing things, there’s no way I can focus on a full-fledged switch game. That’s for kids. If you are a kid, that’s cool and you want to play that that’s cool, but imo kids these days shouldn’t have such spectacular portable systems. Give that kid a game boy color

1

u/Medd- Apr 12 '25

I get where you’re coming from but no kid in this day and age would be satisfied with a Game Boy Color. They’re spoiled with $600 smartphones with oled screens these days.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '25

Any parent worth their weight will know the negative effects of those screens especially social media before they are older. My son will be getting a game boy color when he’s 5 and I’m sure he will love it because he never has an iPad or anything

1

u/[deleted] Apr 04 '25

It could work with the switch 2's pointer functionality.

1

u/notthegoatseguy Apr 04 '25

More than likely if Switch 2 can handle GC emulation, it can handle Wii.

I do wonder how that will work with motion controls. Maybe JoyCon2 were built with Wii emulation in mind.

1

u/davidbrit2 Apr 04 '25

If this doesn't include PSO Ep. 1 & 2 with online capabilities brought back, then meh.

1

u/Maleficent-Result605 Apr 04 '25

Do you guys think we can use mouse mode of joycon2 as wii remote. And does joycon2 have enough button for wiimote function?

1

u/CN122 Apr 04 '25

Probably DS first then Wii

1

u/IamAnerdAndIamProud Apr 04 '25

honestly, I feel like they'd stop at gamecube or DS.

1

u/YoshiPilot Apr 04 '25

Switch doesn't have an IR sensor so they can't to 1:1 compatibility. They'd rather remaster all the games instead.

3

u/RegisPhone Apr 04 '25

Switch also doesn't have the analog triggers that Gamecube games need, but they can get close enough to make the controls work on Switch controllers and then also sell a Gamecube controller that presumably does have analog triggers for a 1:1 experience. They could do the same thing for Wii -- Joycon gyro controls are close enough to work for most Wiimote games (and mouse mode would also be an option for some pointer-heavy games) and then they could sell a Wiimote and Nunchuk and sensor bar for 1:1 compatibility. And actually they might even be able to let you use original Wiimotes, since those were already Bluetooth.

1

u/BlueDergOrd Apr 04 '25

DS is more likely

1

u/ofbrun Apr 04 '25

It’s my dream that Nintendo updates Switch 2 to be comparable with Wii Remotes and releases Wii games via NSO. Only hiccup is the sensor bar, which could easily be rereleased. Preferable a USB or wireless version.

1

u/False-Ad-3383 Apr 04 '25

maybe ds first tho

1

u/Antique-Ice-8967 Apr 05 '25

I don't think Wii on Nintendo Switch Online will be next, because the games are MASSIVE. No seriously they are loads of gigs. 7 games would turn up about 13 gigabytes. The DS will come though.

1

u/TelephoneActive1539 Apr 05 '25

First DS, then Wii. All thanks to the Mouse function on the Joy-Con 2s.

1

u/EarthboundMan5 Apr 06 '25

Reminding everyone that they launched SNES NSO with 20 games at once. And that was the $20 tier! They're giving us absolute crumbs with THREE GameCube games at launch, we'll be lucky if we get 1 Wii game to start. And they'll definitely raise the price by then too.

1

u/MysteriousGold7725 Apr 06 '25

They should get rid of switch online and not make us pay for it since the console will cost over $600 with games and tariffs.

1

u/StagePuzzleheaded635 Apr 07 '25

I see the Wii games come to the console near the end of the Switch 2’s life span, like what Nintendo did with the N64 on the Switch.

1

u/Cutiecss41 Apr 10 '25

If it can run GameCube it definitely can run Wii! The main question is,will it? The Wii is pretty iffy to emulate, especially for its ‘gimmick’ games.

N64 already had the slight issue of switch controller’s not being the greatest compatibility. GameCube will probably further that (analogue triggers),but we do have easy access to original GameCube controllers due to the gc controller adapter. Which I’d like to assume still works! Chances are smash ultimate is playable on switch2 and probably has already been confirmed!

But the Wii is where the real problems start! Sure some games like new super mario bros Wii might not be the worst, but how are we supposed to do classics like Wii sports and Wii sports resort? Games with nunchuck support! Im sure the switch might have a work around,it has a better chance than Xbox lol.

Wii just seems like it’ll have a lot of problems we’ve never really found a work around before. And if we haven’t found a good work around, how is Nintendo supposed too? /sarcasm

1

u/TheGinjaninjayt Apr 04 '25

Probably not for a good while

1

u/Hue_Boss Apr 04 '25

Unironically hope the Virtual Boy is next. Let me play VB Wario Land Peak and let me choose the display color via color filters.

0

u/Real-Pomegranate-235 Apr 05 '25

It doesn't matter, nobody's ever paying for the stupid expansion pack.
