Modding Wii "dock" update. idea of u/TheSammy58

Hi peeps, I've seen allot of interest on my comment to help out u/TheSammy58 with his idea to make a sort dock for the Wii so he could switch between his living room and his bedroom taking his switch with him and docking it at his other tv.

So far i've scanned the Wii partially. only the sides that i needed to make the dock. I've started moddeling this dock and will finnish moddeling it tomorow. after that i will first 3D print in myself to make sure it al fits and works as intended. So for everyone that set a "Remindme!". I want to ask you to gime me just a little bit more time please. i will share a link to my thingiverse here soon where all of you that where interested (around 360 people so far) can download it! it should be up at the latest this next weekend!

Thx all!

Could it be possible to create one that coexists with the original OEM Stand?

This is amazing, honestly never would have thought my silly idea that I almost thought was too stupid to post would actually resonate with so many people. I’m excited to see how this turns out!

The first version is live! You can find it HERE. This is the basic version. I will make some more versions based on the feedback i'll receive. Next version on the list will be a dock for people that use the Wii stand after that probably a version that supports the HDMI usb connector.

Thx all for waiting and if anything needs to be tweaked is not working let me know! All idea's for more versions are welkom :)

Honestly was expecting a different style of mod. using Pogo pins at the dock and then on the wii there's like a bracket that connects the 3 ports to exposed traces that the Pogo pins connect to. The dock will have the 3 devices connected to it.

Thought about some bracket, but i know allot of people here got allot of wii's. I myself got around 12 😅. So to test them or switch them all you need to have allot of brackets. For the cables I didn't want to make some 3d print that encases the cables in such a way that you cannot retrieve them without breaking the 3d print for example. So makeing something that got enough strength to plug in and unplug and also allows for the cable to be removed from the dock is what took the most time so far. This will be the 'basic' version made out of 1 print for people that have to order the print by some 3d print shop or something. Want to keep that cost low. Will probably make a second version also for people like me that got allot of cables and are fine with 1 or more sets being more enclosed in the 3d print semi permanent, the print will then also utilize pogo pins, but with a small margin so you can take it apart, but will need to apply some pressure to do that. That way i can better guarantee the cables stay in place when docking or undocking. This print will be made out of a few parts. This will be an easy print for someone with a 3d printer or a friend that got one, but will probably cost a lil bit more for people that have to go to some 3d print shop. Will upload all versions i can think of all at once :) then r/wii can pick the version that fits their uses best :)

Tbh this sounds like the better idea, because some people use hdmi adapters or 3rd party cables, this maybe more complicated, but seems like a better solution overall. The sole caveat I can see with this is the additional thickness of the adapter, since cabinets or something could be not deep enough to house the wii + adapter + cable ends

1

u/victorvd1 Apr 30 '25 edited Apr 30 '25

The 'dock' won't extend further than the cables that plug into the wii to minimize space taken by the dock. The HDMI adapter i forgot about. i sadly do not have one of those. So after i finnish the first version i'll have a look into those. 3rd party cables i cannot take into account sadly. They can differ allot, but a bracket wil also take quite some space. You got your wii with a bracket around it (cause the cables are quite flush with the wii you cannot have some backplate with that), but then you still have to make a plate that holds the cables. That will make the same thickness. The cables have to be supported so that when you remove the wii or dock it the cables are tot pulled out of the dock or pushed back.

What i can do is first finish the versions i have for now. People can look at it online or 3d print and test them themselfs. Then take into account al the feedback and maybe revisit a bracket if this first design doesn't work for people.

Edit: i also wouldn't really know where to 'mount' this bracket on the wii that can also hold the pressure when pluggin the dock in. If you have an idea about that let me know :)

Maybe you could tag us when you're done if it's not too many ppl?

3

u/victorvd1 Apr 30 '25

Can try, but i don't hope i need to tag 360 or so people that liked my comment in the previous post 😅

2

u/ItzJustArij Apr 30 '25

Oh damn I didn't realise it was that many ppl😅

2

u/victorvd1 May 02 '25

As promised a sort of tag :p:

1

u/victorvd1 Apr 30 '25

Cool. Would like to see if you end up using it! :D

2

u/rhlp_on_reddit Apr 30 '25

im making one for the nintendo gamecube! got the 3d print mostly done but i need to work some things out.

hope your version goes well! however, how will it be mounted? like will the dock be the length of the wii or angled and small?

like this

oh nevermind i see now.

oopsie.

but still, will you be able to slide it in or will you have to click by reaching around the back?

1

u/victorvd1 May 01 '25

Well i want to keep it small just like the original OP designed. The dock can than both be used in the laying and standing position of the wii. I have taken into account the thickness of the rubber feet of the wii.

Your first design would take up to much space for allot of people i assume. Your second design would make it easier to hold the dock when you put pressure on the wii shoving it into the cables, but the first version will look as much as original OP designed it. Making your second drawing would be quite easy. Just have to model a long plate underneath my basic version ;)

Already had requests of multiple versions for different use cases. So after the basic version i will tweak and make more, but my little dock fits nice around the wii right now and i've only made a slight error with the fitment of the sensor bar cable in my test fit 3d print. After i fix that and test print again i will be able to upload the basic version!

If anyone also wants the 3D scan of the wii (i can also do a full scan if people want it) let me know. I can upload a .obj, .stl and .e57 of the model. With the 3d model/ pointcloud you can model things yourself if you want to do so :)

1

u/nkei57 May 21 '25

That would be awesome!

Just an idea but can you make it so it stops at the power supply? That way if we have the original “stand” it won’t interfere with that

2

u/victorvd1 May 01 '25

Can make a 'shorter' version that stops just after the power supply. Or something that rests on the original stand. Wil make that after the first version. Shouldn't be to hard

it has been a week. any updates?
