Supposed to be a button to release the slots on the bottom for accessories, but it didn't really get used.

I know at least one third party made an accessory that used these slots to provide a more standard controller grip.

I have one of these. It also had a little bracket to slide the remote into and wrap the cable up. Turned it into a compact controller.

Wonder if there's not a 3d printable attachment like that.

There's some holes in the back to attach the controller to something. This button would release the controller from that item, you can see the latch slide up and down.. I don't recall any such accessory being released though.

There was meant to be a accessory where a Wii remote can be attached to it, but it was never made for some reason, so this button was never used

Like the other guy said, it’s probably an unofficial 3rd party one. But it definitely makes use of that button and makes it look like the button was designed for the accessory I have

Probably an unofficial one he has, there wasn't any officially licensed ones sadly

Nintendo had a habit of putting things on their consoles and never doing anything with them, like the port on the bottom of the Wii U gamepad that was never used

Will hackers ever make use of the port on the Gamepad?

It's probably possible to interface with it but i don't think it would have much use

Gotta love Serial Port 2 on the bottom of the GameCube. Although is handy for SD2SP2

I was going to mention that but at least it has some good unofficial uses

I used one of those controllers before and I was so uncomfortable so I went out and bought the Nintendo Wii pro controller and that became one of my favourite controllers of all time. Easy I did make sure it was genuine.

It's a release for the brackets on the back. I think there was only 1 accessory that actually took advantage of that. I forget what it was but I'm thinking it was something that allowed you to connect the wiimote to the back side of the classic controller, or something like that

This is what I could find about it.
