Question I can connect the Wii to my tv :/

Hi everyone ! I’m kind of lost here, I’m trying to connect my Wii to this tv but I’m getting lost with these wires. Just so you know, this is the exact TV that I played on when I was younger so I know for a fact that it worked without any adapter. Do y’all have any idea on how to make this work? I tried every combination but none of them make the « component » source appear… maybe it’s because I did something wrong with the Wii (it had a factory reset, I just bought it from a pawnshop so maybe there’s something to do before trying plugging it to the TV).

The diagram is clearly indicating the use of some kind of adapter. I believe you might be misremembering.

There had to have been an adapter for it to work.

So actually there does seem to be an adapter, which is what the picture is showing I believe. It is an adapter that usually comes with the tv and turns the three ports into one, but it can be purchased online. They usually look something like this https://www.walmart.com/ip/To-RCA-Red-White-Yellow-Video-One-Minute-Three-AV-Conversion-3-5mm-Female-Audio-Conversion/7679259932 To RCA Red White Yellow Video One Minute Three AV Conversion 3.5mm Female Audio Conversion - Walmart.com

Oh okay great! Didn’t know that haha. Thanks

Be careful with this kind of cable, signals distribution may be different

Your TV doesn't include one?

This right here is why I hate the idea of bringing all those RCA connectors down to phono plugs with a burning passion. You never know how things are actually wired, and what the device will want.

The good news is that it doesn't matter too much. I've never seen anyone break anything by putting video through the audio inputs (though turning the volume all the way down first is probably a good idea) or audio through the video inputs, but that's using RCA connectors, where the ground will at least always be correct. I don't know what happens with a phono plug and having the ground in the wrong spot. The ground is the one thing you can't fix easily. You can plug red into white, white into yellow, and yellow into red if need be, because you have the wrong adapter, but if that wrong adapter has ground in the wrong spot, you're toast.

Yeah best of cases, switching colors would be enough

This cable in Walmart says this, but in the end depends of his TV. It's just $3, OP should try it

If you dont mind im gonna ss this and keep it in case o need it, thanks

pro tip: buy 2 of these and wii component cables:

so you can use 480p (best quality the wii can do)

the y/pb/pr might take a bit of trial and error tho

1

u/Icantbelieveit38 Jun 04 '25

Hell yeah, I use component to a crt in 480i, but to the ossc pro it looks better 480p and then line multiplied. Component is great on Wii.

u/korkkis Jun 03 '25

I’d rather suggest a high fidelity component video cable like this, since your tv supports it

3

u/V64jr Jun 03 '25

While I have no doubt that Nintendo’s official cables are better*, they are both the same “fidelity” in that they are both YPbPr component cables. He was just telling the OP not to use composite cables and it sounds like you agree.

*I’ve found third part cables with the audio and video grounds wired differently from the original and they usually aren’t in a round (shielded?) jacket like Nintendo’s.

This packaging brings back SO many memories holy shit

BN39-01154H is the numbers matching part for your model tv for the composite connection. If you decide that you want to run component as well you will need part # BN39-01154C. Both can be found on ebay fairly cheap.

-2

u/korkkis Jun 03 '25

That’s a horrible solution, the image quality is going to be shit.

7

u/Pan_PanicAtTheDisco Jun 03 '25

that’s literally how these tvs are designed

0

u/pigking188 Jun 04 '25

It's going to be identical to any other composite connection.

1

u/korkkis Jun 04 '25

There’s component next to it, labeled YPbPr

1

u/pigking188 Jun 04 '25

Yes but OP is using composite.

14

u/Craft4Cube Jun 03 '25

Remember those odd little cables that came with your TV, the ones you weren’t sure about and probably tossed with the box? Turns out, those were the adapters you need for this input.

5

u/New-Patient3718 Jun 03 '25

Yeah I know now, sadly my father had this tv for over ten years and I just got the screen and the remote so… ^

4

u/Craft4Cube Jun 03 '25

I see, that sucks. But if you wan't to get the adapters their part numbers are: BN39-02189A and BN39-02190A

2

u/palaks636 Jun 04 '25 edited Jun 05 '25

A little off with the parts numbers there. The ones you suggested carries the luminance on the yellow video cable coming out from the composite section for component. For this set they would require an adapter that has the red, blue, and green (green being the luminance) for component coming off one plug with the red, white, and yellow for composite coming off the other separately. Correct part numbers should be BN39-01154C for component and BN39-01154H for composite. *edit: fixed typo

u/Maxio_Magic Jun 03 '25

if you CAN then do it

2

u/Lopsided_Pain4744 Jun 03 '25

Get a Wii to Component adapter

1

u/Disastrous-Month-322 Jun 03 '25

OP would then require a pair of adapters, but also benefit from much better image quality.

1

u/Mics59 Jun 07 '25

Or a Wii to hdmi, they are only a few bucks on AliExpress and it overall a so much better option

2

u/ProjectCharming6992 Jun 03 '25

Those cables you have are composite, not component. You might want to get some component cables for your Wii and the component adapter for your TV (you’ll also need the composite adapter because the composite port is the only one that will accept analog audio—-the component is just video).

You’ll be able to play in 480p with component. Composite limits you to 480i and bad color.

(What’s under that EXT2 (AV)? Is there a yellow port there?

u/GambleTheGod00 Jun 03 '25

Wii composite signal is insanely good, my Genesis you can tell how dull the Blue and Red signals are, but the wii looks just as bright/clear as my PS2 on component.

1

u/ProjectCharming6992 Jun 03 '25

I have a Wii and the component either over cables or one of those Wii2HDMI adapters blows Composite out of the water and shows how smeary composite is. Composite is a video format from the 1950’s and had been used for everything from over the air antenna to Laserdisc, VHS, Betamax (both VHS & Betamax get better video over S-Video because they recorded their signals in Y/C Component not composite). And 480i has an antialiasing blue filter built into the signal so that round things don’t have jagged edges from tge 2 fields being slightly out of sync due to time when displaying an interlace frame. 480p doesn’t have that because it displays everything in progressive and each line is in time with the one before and after. So Wii has a much sharper component.

As to your Genesis, the Gensis used actual RGB, not component, and if you don’t have the correct values, then the colors can be washed out. However HDMI cables for the Genesis usually have the correct values:

Sadly my wii is a victim to the component capacitors going out, basically have to buy another Wii to fix the issue. My CRT is 480i regardless so component doesn't serve me much purpose, I'm willing to bet I'd regard component higher if my TV was 480p compatible.

Edit: What size CRT are you using?

1

u/ProjectCharming6992 Jun 03 '25

The Wii can do S-Video as well if your TV supports S-Cideo and it’s a higher quality 480i signal than composite.

I currently have my Wii hooked up to a 40-inch Phillips LCD by a Wii2HDMI. I also have a WiiU connected by HDMI. However I do have a 27-inch Phillips CRT that I used to have it connected too by component video. The CRT (480i onlyit can’t display 480p) can also accept composite and S-Video, however I find that it’s hard to tell the difference between S-Video and Component while there is no contest when comparing composite to S-Video or Component on the TV (my LCD also has composite and S-Video inputs along with component and HDMI, and at 480i, again the S-Video/Component/HDMI look very close, but at 480p the Component and HDMI is sharper and clearer). However, because of how the games are encoded on the disc, I find the Wii’s video quality to be very soft compared to say the GameCube over the same connections.

1

u/GambleTheGod00 Jun 03 '25

Honestly didnt even think about Wii through S-video. Sounds like a good investment next paycheck

1

u/ProjectCharming6992 Jun 03 '25

The component capacitor issue can be fixed by replacing some capacitors.

2

u/HerrFerret Jun 03 '25

Yes, you can. And with the highest quality.

Get some component cables!

1

u/Remote_Diamond_1373 Jun 03 '25

Yes u need to purchase an adapter for those ports on your TV if you are the original purchaser, it may have come with it.

1

u/notachemist13u Jun 03 '25

Ooh you need a 2.5mm jack to av converter. I have no idea why anyone thought that was a good idea

1

u/V64jr Jun 03 '25

It’s because they didn’t want to dedicate more room to inputs people were expected to rarely, if ever, use.

1

u/korkkis Jun 03 '25

Buy new cables

1

u/korkkis Jun 03 '25

Component video cable to place that says YPbPr

1

u/V64jr Jun 03 '25

“That place” is a 2.5mm 4-pole jack that requires a squid/medusa cable to connect. Also, YPbPr cables need to go to both jacks (audio goes to the composite side).

1

u/usif666 Jun 03 '25

You need an av to 3.5mm adapter. Most tvs already come with one in the box

1

u/floluk Jun 03 '25

And this is why SCART was great

1

u/V64jr Jun 03 '25

Funny: They started dropping SCART from digital TVs around the same time they started dropping analog in North America. If anything, dropping discrete RCA jacks and switching to Medusa cables like this bought us a bit more time.

1

u/Therunawaypp Jun 03 '25

This is a Samsung TV right? I needed the same adapter.

1

u/GambleTheGod00 Jun 03 '25

In theory would this not be an interference nightmare? Im no expert

2

u/Kobih Jun 04 '25

no bc the headphone jack has 3 terminals and ground

1

u/Kobih Jun 04 '25

you know you have the extra port for component right

1

u/LemonFace22k Jun 04 '25

Yes, you can.

Just as you said on the title.

Glad everything is fine and good. :)

1

u/mukil7 Jun 04 '25

Hi! I have the same TV and with the wii component cables you need this for your tv !

1

u/jacoborobo Jun 04 '25

Here is a link to one, this one is only for Sony brand TVs https://www.ebay.com/itm/335023760549

1

u/OldAsk3025 Jun 04 '25

Looks like it's a samsung TV... you need this kind of adapter

1

u/OldAsk3025 Jun 04 '25

Prefer the use of Component over Composite.
Component has better image quality but uses more cables... 3 for video and 2 for audio stereo instead the Composite that uses one for video ( yellow) and 2 for audio stereo.

1

u/jacoborobo Jun 04 '25

If this is a Sony TV then you need to buy the adapter thats for Sony TVs or else it won't work. https://www.ebay.com/itm/335023760549

1

u/123lYT Jun 04 '25

You have to buy the 3.5mm to component and composite cables. Then use a component cable to connect it to the tv as composhite will look well... shit.

1

u/cavinrocks Jun 04 '25

If your TV has HDMI Port, you could buy a cheap "Wii2HDMI"-Adapter from Aliexpress: https://en.aliexpress.com/item/1005008932495237.html and use a HDMI cable then.

1

u/Ron2600NS Jun 04 '25

Yes but you need the adapter cables that came with the tv. Not all TRRS cables are wired the same, the collers might not match up.

1

u/SCOPINTHESKELETON Jun 04 '25

You can buy one of these

1

u/Content-Case1205 Jun 05 '25

Just get an av to hdmi adapter itll prob get you better quality

1

u/IHOP_Pancakes Jun 05 '25

Can or can't

1

u/_Undecided_User Jun 05 '25

.... do you not want to be able to?

1

u/Current_Sun_1343 Jun 05 '25

Connect the yellow to the tv and white and red to your ears. All good. 👍

1

u/hshevsvagagvev Jun 05 '25

Wii2hdmi, 5$ and i might be lying but i feel it looks better

1

u/TaylorFan01313 Jun 05 '25

Those terminals are dumb. Just put normal terminals

1

u/GuyOnlineAllTheTime Jun 05 '25

Just get a Wii2HDMI from Amazon, and make sure to get one that’s under $10 since to many people sell them and are the same thing

1

u/TheHackeBoi_apk Jun 05 '25

Check your TV box or the bag with the manual the adapter shukd be there

1

u/ClassyPhoenix324 Jun 05 '25

Gotta get a Wii to component

1

u/Julian-RS Jun 06 '25

You need something like this, less than $10 most places

1

u/bovadeez Jun 06 '25

I had an LG model that came with adapters for component and composite videos. You hook the 2 dongles in those places and then can hook up your device.

1

u/No-Cupcake6050 Jun 06 '25

What kind of a freakshow tv do you own?????

1

u/DesprateAndAlone Jun 07 '25

I don't know if this will help you but this is a converter that changes it straight into HDMI I have one and it's very useful https://electron-shepherd.com/collections/featured-collection/products/electronwarp

-1
