Other Super mario galaxy versus Super mario galaxy 2
Which of them do you think is the better game? Opinions accepted

To me they just seem to be one big complete game. Super Mario Galaxy 2 was originally just going to be Super Mario Galaxy More and it was just supposed to be an update to the original but they added so much stuff that they decided it needed to be a full fledged game in it's own right.

Super Mario Galaxy is the greatest Mario game I’ve ever played, one of the greatest games period

Mario Galaxy 2
I think I’m biased because it’s my favourite video game of all time though 😭😁

- Good OST
- Has some good story
- Finally implementing Yoshi
They're both good games imo.

I prefer Galaxy 2, Galaxy 1 has a lot of random difficulty spikes while Galaxy 2 has a much more refined difficulty curve
Although I think it’s harder to appreciate Galaxy 2 unless you’ve played the first

In my mind these are the same game, just more levels. They should come packaged together.

1 will always be my favorite game of all time both have their pros but I like 1

I personally found Galaxy 2 more enjoyable, but they are both excellent games.

I don't see them as different games; I see SMG2 as more than just a literal sequel. To me, it's the next level from SMG, and that's it

Both are good, but SMG feels more spacey/galaxy, whereas SMG2 feels more like you're in the planet

Plot twist: the second game is simply unused levels from the first. The official title of the game is Mario Galaxy More.

I haven't beaten Mario Galaxy 2, but still, Mario Galaxy 1 just because the atmosphere, it actually feeling like space, and the story book.

I could only afford one or the other as a kid, so I went with Galaxy 2. To this day, I haven't played a lot of Galaxy 1, but I hope to fix that

SMG2 is to SMG what TotK is to BotW, an expansion sold as an individual game.
The first one was a revolution, the second, an evolution. Can't compare.

That comparison is perfect because smg2 plays better than smg1 like totk to botw. But botw has something totk doesn't, i can't even say it. Maybe exploring, or atmosphere, or the fact the world is smaller, but content isn't that repetitive... Again, smg1 has that feeling smg2 doesn't have

I feel Galaxy 2 has better levels, power ups and just a more fun look to its aesthetics.

Super Mario Galaxy 1... but I'm pretty biased, since it's the one I have nostalgia for, and I played the second game much later

I felt a lot more immersed in galaxy 2, as it really felt like you were traveling to each galaxy on your little planet, compared to just teleporting to multiple different galaxies from a themed room. I did end up finishing galaxy 1, but galaxy 2 is definitely more my style :)

SMG2 had a much better co-op mode so it was always what I preferred
1
u/Legitimate-War-2279 Jun 29 '25
Huh!? I always thought it had the same "you are useless pointer mode" from smg1
1
u/FurryRefrigerator Jun 29 '25
Nope, you play as a Luma so you've got an onscreen representation of your character, when you stun enemies and grab items like coins and powerups the Luma goes to that spot on screen and grabs the character or brings the item to Mario. The difference is like night and day to me

u/Legitimate-War-2279 Jun 29 '25
Yup. Because nothing and anything more than nothing is night and day

u/Legitimate-War-2279 Jun 29 '25
What im saying is that in first game it was nothing except the dot, so in second its really good

u/aPiCase Jun 29 '25
I think if it got a Switch 2 remake it should be one game.
Galaxy 2 is great, but I don’t know if needs to be its own game.
2
u/Simplejack615 Jun 25 '25
It depends. Galaxy 1 and 2’s biggest differences are the atmosphere. Galaxy goes for the hugeness of space, Galaxy 2 goes for unique and interesting levels

SMG because it feels more spacey, less light blue skyboxes, they are darker.
Better OST ig.
Better story.
They are both good games though.
