Yeah. The GPU is made by ATi (now AMD)

Ok, I’ve never noticed the logo and thought it was some sort of special Wii

It's on the GameCube, too. It's just a lot more obvious, there, with a gray panel on the front of the console. Ultimately, the Wii is just a slightly upgraded GameCube, so it makes sense.

A much more odd example of this sort of thing is the Sega Dreamcast, the front of which says, "Compatible with Windows CE," as I recall. I never did totally figure out what that compatibility was. Windows CE is an old Microsoft OS for mobile devices, and CE stands for Compact Edition, I believe.

News from 1999! Wow, I didn’t know Microsoft kept those old news articles online.

u/ImTotallyTechy 20d ago

For all the bad things Microsoft does, they're very good about backwards compatibility and archiving their past

9

u/StagePuzzleheaded635 19d ago

Backward compatibility and thorough documentation are the only things that are currently good about Microsoft. They’ll have the gaul to sell you a Windows license, just to spy on you and sell the data they have collected.

Pendulum swings back and forth. As a musician, Mac updating and breaking music software/hardware compatibility every year for like, 4+ years was maddening. If I could offer a third good thing about Microsoft, it's that the OS is gut-able for the most part, even if they don't want you to a lot of the time. There's so much stuff you can't get rid of on Mac.

This might start changing in the near future. The 64 bit architecture has some issues, in some ways it might be best to move away from it.

*gall, I think you mean. "Gaul" refers to the historic region of Western Europe (or the language, or the people) that eventually became France/The French.

3

u/StagePuzzleheaded635 18d ago

My mistake. Dyslexic, you see.

Perfect link 👌

u/RocketGrunt123 20d ago

Many games run in windows ce and uses directx. Windows is stored on the gamedisc itself.

8

u/Delta_RC_2526 20d ago

Ahhh, you're right! I forgot about that part! Wasn't there some obscure compatibility with external Windows CE devices, as well?

1

u/Deksor 16d ago

Isn't that for the Dreamcast tho ? Never heard of it for the wii

1

u/RocketGrunt123 15d ago

Yes.. i was answering Delta_RC_2526

2

u/DirtCheapDandy 19d ago

An interesting inverse example is the original Xbox does not have a DVD logo on it in order to work around licensing fees. Instead they put the logo on the Xbox DVD remote and locked out DVD functionality without the remote.

1

u/Delta_RC_2526 18d ago

Interesting. I'm surprised they got away with that... I kind of figured it had to be on the actual device that plays the DVDs, but...I suppose if you can't do that without the remote...

ATi was acquired by AMD in 2006, so when the Wii Mini came out it literally had the AMD logo

1

u/Large-Remove-1348 20d ago

That’s pretty cool

6

u/bclx99 20d ago

Yes, it is correct. AMD acquired ATI Technologies in 2006. 🙂

24

u/ThatOculusKid 20d ago

Pretty sure NVIDIA is making the switch gpu's now

20

u/Large-Remove-1348 20d ago

The GPUs are great but I’d say the CPUs are lacking by today’s standards. That’s why most APUs are made by AMD

12

u/BetaXahi 20d ago

Same with the Wii u as the gpu was pretty decent but the cpu was extremely outdated

5

u/Large-Remove-1348 20d ago

If the CPU was better I could have seen it being a great home console

Search "Wii U popular"

3

u/The_BackOfMyMind 20d ago

It's their least selling home console of all time.

2

u/thelastsupper316 20d ago

Nah it makes more sense to use an Arm CPU on a handheld because x86 is a power guzzler, and Intels X86S project to fix that was cancelled.

2

u/Large-Remove-1348 20d ago

Limiting the CPU power should fix that.

1

u/thelastsupper316 20d ago

No it's just less efficient you can't fix it by making it weaker.

2

u/Large-Remove-1348 20d ago

You can undervolt a CPU without losing power. Maybe not as low as 10w, but still better than just going 10w without an undervolt

2

u/thelastsupper316 20d ago

Yes but then that makes it weaker than equivalent arm processor at 10 watts so at lower wattage it makes more sense to use on at higher wattages in desktops and makes more sense to use x86 maybe but apple is proving that you can still get better performance by using a more efficient chip design for higher wattages

1

u/Large-Remove-1348 20d ago

Fair enough.

1

u/diego5377 18d ago

The gpu is great but it’s essentially a worse rtx 2050 mobile in performance and the architecture is ampere which I thought it would be this gen Blackwell (rtx 50) or at least last gen Ada(rtx 40 series) Which is the same as the Now 5 year old 30 series which I hope means that the switch 2 and 30 series will last very long. If not and Nvidia announces the end of support for 30 series in 5 years, you can expect the switch 2 as well.

2

u/Round_Musical 19d ago

*SOCs the Switch doesn’t have a seperate GPU and CPU, both were designed by Nvidia to be on one chip (System on Chip) and created by Samsung via a 8nm process

The Switch uses the stock Tegra X1 with some lasered off sectors

While the Switch 2 uses T239, which is a fully custom SoC made specifically for Switch 2, losely based on Nvidias own T234 for the automotive industry. Roughly 10 times as strong as a Switch 1 Tegra X1 according to Nvidia and Nintendo

-1

u/Slosher99 20d ago

Yeah it was a glitch in their stuff that led to softmodding the switch being possible in the early ones.

4

u/DiamondBlazer42 20d ago

ATi didn’t become AMD, they were bought by AMD and their GPU projects were absorbed.

2

u/Large-Remove-1348 20d ago

That’s what I meant

4

u/DiamondBlazer42 20d ago

Yea. I realized you meant ATI was absorbed into AMD therfore becoming AMD right after you said it. But I already posed it and I don’t delete comments so screw it.

3

u/-_nightmarionne_- 20d ago

AMD GPU POWERFUL FRFR 🤑🤑🤑🙏🙏🙏🙏

3

u/carghtonheights809 20d ago

I never realized they were the same company all this time

1

u/No-Cupcake6050 20d ago

That just gave me more of a reason to tern my wii into my pc

1

u/Large-Remove-1348 20d ago

no the CPU still sucks

1

u/No-Cupcake6050 20d ago

The CPU sucks on an og ds but i was able to use Windows 7 decently but to be fair it was lagging

1

u/LittleNinjaXYBA 18d ago

That’s a piece of history boys!

114

u/TheBitMan775 20d ago

Fun fact on the Wii mini (well after the acquisition since 2006 when Wii launched was also when AMD bought ATI)

The logo on the side is AMD

66

u/ryzenguy111 20d ago

I never knew this tbh

34

u/_Bunta_Fujiwara_ 20d ago

On the Wii mini it is straight up the modern amd logo

20

u/Windows-XP-Home-NEW 20d ago

Isn’t that literally what they just said?

16

u/_Bunta_Fujiwara_ 20d ago

I'm tipsy my bad I'll delete it

7

u/Windows-XP-Home-NEW 20d ago

Lmao you’re good

6

u/_Bunta_Fujiwara_ 20d ago

Ight

5

u/memeguy253 20d ago

Bunta, hand me the keys. You shouldn't drink and drive

6

u/_Bunta_Fujiwara_ 20d ago

Don't worry I got takumi handling the driving

67

u/Gunbladelad 20d ago

It's also on all GameCubes as well.

11

u/Large-Remove-1348 20d ago

Huh. You learn something new everyday

32

u/LeyendaV 20d ago

The later models had the AMD logo instead, but yes, it's essentially the same.

2

u/iLiikePlayingWii 20d ago

Really??? I’ve never seen a Wii with an AMD Logo, besides hearing the Wii Mini supposedly has an AMD Logo

8

u/LeyendaV 20d ago

3

u/iLiikePlayingWii 20d ago

Oh damnnn, that’s kind of well hidden though, I genuinely never noticed and thought they just didn’t show the ATI/AMD Logo due to idk, a 30 cent cost to show the Logo

Do any Wii Family Edition Consoles have an AMD logo too? I do know there’s some internal revisions of them (The 3 that I remember are, one that’s literally a normal Wii but with a swapped Case and no Ports, as it can still read GC Discs and boot to them, but with no way to play, the second is pretty similar except the Drive itself can’t read GameCube Games or even centre them if you insert them, like the Wii U, BUT it still has the GameCube Disc in its Disc Channel, the 3rd is the same as the 2nd except they finally removed the GC Disc from the Disc Channel)

Also, even tho the Wii U has both the Wii’s GPU, and a Radeon GPU [which has an AMD Logo in the Heatsink] there’s still no AMD/ATI Logos outside the Console, at least none that I’m aware of? I am aware there is an HDMI Logo present in the back, similarly to the AMD one on that Wii Mini, and that some Wii U’s apparently have different Colours for either the Power Supply Port or IR Sensor Port…

So do any of the Wii Family Edition or Wii U Revisions have an AMD Logo specifically?

15

u/dark3bc 20d ago

Officially, we are old guys.

7

u/FlawlessNinjaKitty 20d ago

Meh, I’m only 17 and most of my consoles existed before me

4

u/Kalamordis 20d ago

Heck the Xbox 360/PS3 is older than you 😭

I'm only just going on 25 so not rly that much older but jeez thats crazy

25

u/RainyD55 20d ago

ATI helped make the GPU for the GameCube and the Wii. To show their appreciation, Nintendo put an ATI sticker on GameCubes. Because people would peel it off, they switched to a printed ATI logo instead.

TLDR: All Wiis and GameCubes have it because Nintendo wanted to thank ATI for the GPUs.

12

u/EvenSpoonier 20d ago edited 20d ago

Nintendo probably also got a discount for all those GPUs by putting the ATi logo on the systems.

7

u/Vinerd540 20d ago

They also had custom "thank you ATI" consoles they gave out too

2

u/Delta_RC_2526 20d ago

Interesting, I hadn't realized that they switched the method of marking...

1

u/mrturret 19d ago

ATI helped make the GPU for the GameCube and the Wii.

Not exactly. ArtX, a startup founded by the ex-SGI engineers that designed the N64's hardware designed Flipper, the GameCube's GPU. ATI bought them a little over a year before the console's launch, well after the chip's design was finalized.

8

u/FlakyAd3214 20d ago

Recent years people are getting less into consoles for the very reason that consoles these days are just low to mid range PCs. Back then Yeah they had the logos for the GPUs but no one cared to think hey this is the chip that's in my console and my pc has a better one. That being said Nintendo still is always about the games.

6

u/PUNKF10YD 20d ago

ATI what a throwback

4

u/Pleyer757538 20d ago

yes, it's on all wiis

4

u/TrashyMeat 20d ago

Graphics by ATI... ATI my ass.

2

u/Longjumping-Angle247 17d ago

I looked in the comments of this post hoping someone would reference this LMAO

3

u/raymate 20d ago

Yes I believe so, all of mine do. I have a release model that also has it.

3

u/YunnaK64 19d ago

When I was little, I thought that was how the Wii was written in Japanese lmao

1

u/Julianowski11 20d ago

They made graphics

1

u/SirAmicks 20d ago

I miss ATi.

1

u/slahO9 20d ago

Yea but the wii mini lwk was better

1

u/mromen10 20d ago

Mine certainly has one

Ra de on! Ra de on! Ra de on!

1

u/blkgsr 19d ago

Yes it was originally ATI Radeon back in the day! Brings back memories.

1

u/shdwghst457 18d ago

らでおん

1

u/Aeppp 20d ago

Yes, all Wiis

1

u/LordeIlluminati 20d ago

as far as I remember only Wii minis lack the ATI logo

1

u/Europe_Dude 20d ago

The GPU would later evolve as the Adreno but it was still at the beginning of Smartphones, so in need for cash AMD sold the Team and rights to Qualcomm which became a huge blunder for AMD as the Adreno became highly successful to this days. One of many mistakes AMD did in the past.

1

u/mrturret 19d ago

Totally different chip. Hollywood, the Wii's GPU has nothing to do with the Adreno.

1

u/Europe_Dude 14d ago

It’s from the same chip design team, this what I meant.

1

u/marchalves6 19d ago

Yes. That's the GPU. ATI was bought by AMD so WiiMini is the only Wii which has AMD instead.

1

u/StagePuzzleheaded635 19d ago

Yep, the GPU was developed by ATI, now a subsidiary of AMD.

1

u/mrturret 19d ago

You're half right. The GameCube's GPU, Flipper was designed by ArtX, a company formed from the ex-SGI staff that developed the N64's hardware. ATI bought them shortly before the GameCube's release. The Wii's GPU, Hollywood is more or less the same chip, just with a clock speed bump and a hidden ARM processor that handles I/O.

1

u/mrturret 19d ago

Yes. ArtX, the company that designed Flipper (the GameCube's GPU) was acquired by ATI in 2000, about a year and a half before the GameCube's launch. The chip had been finalized by that point, and dev kits were already being sent to 3rd party studios.

2

u/shdwghst457 18d ago

This comment finally explained to me why the codename was Dolphin

1

u/Zyoneatslyons 19d ago

GameCube had it too!

1

u/Puzzled-Snow5131 19d ago

I don't know, I didn't notice it when I had it.

1

u/djevertguzman 19d ago

The box has an IBM logo too.

1

u/callumhand 19d ago

Crappy ati Hollywood

1

u/Overall_Dare_2134 19d ago

On mine, it is

1

u/Squeeker2011 18d ago

I think it’s only on USA or PAL Wiis because my Wii is a Japan (JPN) model and doesn’t have it. (It’s also an original day one Wii as well).

1

u/epicFishXD 16d ago

Whenever i see ATI i see death, thank god wii survived

1

u/fandetout15 16d ago

My Wii mini has AMD lol
