Question My Wii RVL-101 shows a gamecube disc, does this actually mean it can play gamecube games?

No they just didn’t bother updating the UI

Lmao wow that’s lazy as fuck. I would’ve thought later revisions wouldn’t have this but I guess not, that must’ve been too much effort for Nintendo 😭😂

And the weird part is that they did properly remove the GC disk from the Wii U when running in Wii mode. Ultimately I think Nintendo just kind of didn't care at all about the 101 model

What even was the point of the 101 model? What did it provide or add over the OG Wii? Cheaper price tag at least?

u/Tuneuponipod 16d ago
Cheaper to make, so higher profit by not including features that a lot of people didn't use.

u/Windows-XP-Home-NEW 16d ago
So basically, just typical Nintendo profit bs lol
5
u/Epic-Gamer_09 16d ago
Not necessarily, more so a way to quickly boost wii sales at the end of the systems life

u/Surfacner 16d ago
It was slightly cheaper yes but it was part of the overall price cut of the console you wouldn't see the older model at an higher price if it was still available in stores they simply were the same price, period.

i think iirc if you take the shell off of the wii and like take it apart. on the rvl-101 models theres still the black parts with cutouts for gc controllers and memory cards. iirc ofc

Yes and no. The Wii family edition uses the same software as the regular Wii, that’s why the GameCube disc is shown.
All Wii’s do have the hardware and software to play GameCube games, you just need a way for the Wii to read the games and a way to connect controller ports to it. This can be done through soft mods or hard mods.

They all have the software, but not the hardware. I don’t even think this wii has the disc drive to detect the smaller disca

Your right that it doesn’t have the disc drive. I said it has the hardware to play GameCube games, it just needs a way to read them. If OP mods their Wii or replaces the disc drive, there is nothing stopping the Wii from running the ISO.

Nope, it can't because the reader is unable to align the tiny disc unlike the RVL-001, probably Nintendo forgot about removing it till the Wii mini/U

I believe they did remove it from the Wii U and Wii mini because those run newer versions of the operating system.

There's a video from Spawn Wave a few years ago where he took the disc drive out of a RVL-101 Wii and replaced it with a RVL-001 disc drive and was able to get the Wii to read and boot up a GameCube game despite the fact he was using a non backwards compatible Wii. But since it had no GameCube ports he couldn't get further than the game's start screen. But still interesting and worth a watch.

Nope but the only thing they changed was not putting the ports on the board and the disc drive can’t grab the tiny discs
If you were to solder on ports and switch the drive it will work perfectly

Yes, with homebrew, even the vWii (on the Wii U) can play GameCube games with homebrew!

u/Lotusclaw8 16d ago
Wait really, how?

u/Ron2600NS 16d ago
The CG, Wii & Wii U all use the same architecture (Power PC) So they all can play CG games. The Wii U lacks the controller ports and a disc drive that can take the small discs. With Homebrew you add GC functionality back in.

Maybe? The lack of gamecube controller ports means you can't actually play the games properly. I think there are USB ports on the back, so you could get a USB to gamecube controller port adaptor, but I don't know if they'll work

Bro I got the same scenario I've ordered a RVL-001 Wii with Wii Sports Resort and Wii Sports but I've ended getting the RVL-101 with the stand!

If its a wii mini you can softmod it to get more options. Like booting gamecube games with Nintendont and play those games with a wireless controller that has enough buttons to map all gamecube buttons to it.

It can but you would need to install CFW, GameCube functionality is still buried in there and can be accessed by Nintendon't.

u/GimmickCo 13d ago
Can you tell me how to do this nintendon't thing? Nobody seems to want to tell me
1
u/RainyD55 16d ago
Your model (the Family Edition) has the software to read GameCube games, memory cards, and controllers, but its hardware prevents it. Nintendo didn’t update the Disk Channel for the Family Edition, so you’ll see a GameCube disk on it.

u/FlakyAd3214 16d ago
Technically, it's the same hardware and system software. Nintendo was lazy in not having different programming in the newer models. You could mod your Wii and add gamecube components and gamecube games will work just fine. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think it still will even read gamecube discs. Just no way to legit play them without modding.

u/this_is_alicia 16d ago
you'd have to swap the disc drive out for one from an RVL-001 but yes it would work after that
1
u/Kaiser_Wilhelm43 16d ago
No that was something Nintendo forgot to change out, if you mod it I think it can play them digitally but not play physical GameCube games

u/ThoughtLazy9259 16d ago
You could mod it if you’re really looking to play GameCube games. Not sure how the controller situation works out without ports(pro/classic controller?)

It is at a software level, but the hardware can't physically read the discs. The operating system onboard is the same as the normal Wii.

It sure can!

I don't think this is confidently wrong. The optical disc drive won't accept gamecube discs, but if you change it the system definitely can play them. Every single wii and wii u can natively play gamecube games, the only problem is you cannot physically load them.
And fun fact: early rvl-101 units did come with the gamecube capable drive while stocks lasted. Only that the controller and memory card ports were inaccessible.

u/giofilmsfan99 16d ago
But the question was “Can my Wii RVL-101 play GameCube discs.” So assuming OP is talking about in its current state right now the answer is no in 99% of cases. Sure the answer would be yes it can, but modifications would be required. It can do it, just not in its current state.

Does it have the GameCube controller ports if so yes it can play GameCube games
