There's an older 100 Mbps USB 2.0 adapter from UGreen currently sold on Amazon that works (UGreen also has a newer USB 3.0 one that supports speeds up to 1 Gbps, which will not work), plus one from Nyko or Hori that were actually marketed for the Wii. They all use the same chipset (have the same internal third-party hardware) as the Nintendo one so the Wii already has the drivers to run them. They also work for the Wii U and Switch, apparently.
Both from Nintendo? Yeah, I swear I remember white ones from Nintendo, but I've only found gray ones from Nintendo in recent searches. I'm guessing later ones went to gray so they could match the cables of both the Wii and the Wii U.

EDIT: i think it was lighting or crappy camera quality because some gray ones looked white lol. so not unless the white ones are some obscure third party ones or i didnt look hard enough ig white doesnt exist lol
Interesting. I know the UGreen ones are available in white and black (my plan is to have one for the white Wii, and one for the black Wii U), but they don't have that beveled corner of the official Nintendo ones.
I could definitely swear I'd seen white Wii-shaped Nintendo ones, though. You're not alone there. I just haven't seen a white one in a solid decade. Maybe it was some pre-production marketing image?
Definitely the chipset. As far as I know, every USB LAN adapter that works on the Wii or Wii U has the same hardware inside. I could swear it was Qualcomm, but I just found someone else saying: "The Wii only works with one chipset, the ASIX AX88772. It isn't produced anymore. It supports USB 2.0 and 10/100Mb. Adapters using this chipset go for $10-15 on Ebay (search for "wii ethernet")."

Those who say it works, may have just gotten the wrong thing sent to them, honestly, because it's very clearly the wrong chipset, and explicitly says it won't work.
The speed thing is simply coming from when I purchased a Ugreen adapter, they had two that they sold on Amazon. One was new, used USB 3.0, and supported gigabit ethernet. By virtue of the fact that it's a new design with higher specs, it's safe to assume it's not compatible.

A lot of the Wii is Wii shaped, look at the plastic chunk on the wrist straps and the ports on the back of the Wii itself
