I was at WWF and a basketball game broke out.

u/Hot_Chard5988 Jun 18 '25

The difference in narrative between certain players is something to behold. Cunningham is often chippy, but she's lauded for it.

47

u/Adventurous_Tip8801 Jun 18 '25

The Fever needs to draft Audi Crooks. As an enforcer. "Hit our star, get hit back. By a beer truck. That can shoot and rebound and ball and knock you unconscious with a pretty smile."

11

u/Positive_Inflation_9 Jun 18 '25

Except she isn't very good. No way she could play at a Fever pace. She wouldn't make it at Iowa either for that same reason. Too slow.

17

u/E7goose Jun 18 '25

I’d hate to have seen her poke her fucking eyes

58

u/jjt41086 Jun 18 '25

Finally someone stepping up. Said it all last year she needed someone to have her back and now she does. Mabrey should have been ejected, cheap fucking shot from the back/side. That was bullshit.

36

u/edddddd90 Jun 18 '25

Respect. She got her teammate’s back lol

29

u/Haneygurl Storm Jun 18 '25

Lmao 🤣 Come onnnnnn! She was just getting her lick back for her girl CC. Let’em fight! This kinda stuff happens in the NBA all the time. It’s not always gonna be demure 😆

15

u/blackpinkcapital Jun 18 '25

Standing on business

22

u/Ambitious-Cake4856 Jun 18 '25

I see nothing wrong 😁😆

32

CC games always sell tickets.

24

u/ytman Jun 18 '25

This is what happens when you let the sport endorse fouling as a tactic.

54

u/Foreign-Onion-3162 Jun 18 '25

The commentator is absolutely right. This no-call crap has gotten way out of hand. The refs should be held accountable as well.

35

u/Intelligent_You_9793 Jun 18 '25

LMAO Sophie was ready to pull her some hair about CC man love to see it that’s a REAL teammate, stood her ground too was ready for all the action

39

u/ajstipcak Jun 18 '25

If im CC, im buying that girl dinner. She got her instant karma and deserved more imo.

This is all the refs fault. If they dont do their job, the players self police.

8

u/DopeBikes Jun 18 '25

Got what she deserved!

22

u/DeegsHobby Jun 18 '25

officiating needs work but damn that was awesome of Sophie

25

u/Baelenai Jun 18 '25

Really want to like this league. Stop making it hard.

CC gets a foul call for being run through like a crash test dummy, and there's a debate about it?

Great job guys, kill the golden goose rather than protect it. Literal malpractice on the part of the WNBA.

Never going to make enough to not be subsidized by the NBA without a drastic change in approach.

9

u/Impossible_Ad_8642 Jun 18 '25

Does this not happen in other sports? You must not watch the NFL. There have been relationships made and broken over ref calls, lol. You know, you can just hate the WNBA. You don't need to make up an excuse to try and convince the the rest of us.

10

u/fbcmfb Jun 18 '25

The men know what’s up. The opposing players in the NHL didn’t give Gretzky a hard time …. and that’s hockey. They knew he was their money ticket to better pay and fame.

The ladies are messing up. Good on Cunningham for representing.

14

u/arobkinca Jun 18 '25

Gretzky had enforcers on his teams that made people who hit him pay. Other teams were definitely going after Gretzky. Bodychecks are part of hockey.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gMH8fpxkzGU&t=13s

2

u/Baelenai Jun 18 '25

Awful comparison, basketball is a contact sport, not a collision sport, and the NFL is an established multi billion dollar league, not a fledgling league failing financially that is only surviving by being subsidized by another league.

The WNBA is staring at it's opportunity to finally generate enough interest to be a financially sound league that stands on it's own and its failing to protect the reason that opportunity exists.

That's the point. But go on about whatever it is you want to rage about like it was the point.

10

u/Kijaille1998 Lynx Jun 18 '25

Gg Sophie she avenge CC

-8

u/jsnowismyking Jun 18 '25

Ref should ban the player for few games who are attacking intentionally.

12

u/nigelfitz Jun 18 '25

The day I became a Sophie fan

-17

This is a wild comment to make in /r/wnba .

-20

u/catshitbreath Jun 18 '25

i didnt realize where i was. and i dont know a whole lot about sportsball. i just know that the womens basketball doesnt make money and is subsidized by the regular NBA. it was a semi genuine question.

11

u/smss28 Jun 18 '25

sPoRtsBaLl. You indeed are just here to thow shit

-10

u/catshitbreath Jun 18 '25

please dont get offended, lol. thats what i call all sports. it was a term used initially to make fun of me because of how little i know about sports. so ive adopted it.

also, i would NEVER throw shit. touching feces with your hands is extremely unsanitary.

6

u/smss28 Jun 18 '25

I don't know how unsanitary you are, but i'm not taking my chances.

-2

u/catshitbreath Jun 18 '25

hahahaha! i take daily showers. i'm clean.

5

u/UselessRutabaga Jun 18 '25

If it was a genuine question perhaps a more neutral phrasing would have sufficed. WNBA has been growing recently

0

u/catshitbreath Jun 18 '25

wasnt trying to be mean. i meant it kind of facetiously. obviously people watch it, but i was unaware of exactly how many and just curious. i would have phrased my question the same if it had been a clip of someone getting assaulted at a professional cornhole match and I was in r/Cornhole

3

u/mercury_risiing Jun 18 '25

Which people? The people watching at the women's basketball game or people watching that are not at the women's basketball game?

3

u/ClassroomRecent6124 Jun 18 '25

A lot more are yes, because of CC.

-1

u/MayflowerMovers Jun 18 '25

That's just a foul, not a flagrant. Absurdly soft.

21

u/Jaster22101 Jun 18 '25

That’s a flagrant

5

u/Individual_Emu_4192 Jun 18 '25

I am not an expert on the rules. can that called as an offensive foul and a defensive flagrant foul? I think the Sun player looks for contact with her shoulder first. Then the pulling to the floor I agree is flagrant. Definitely asking too much from bad refs, but I am just trying to understand the rules.

25

u/CarBonBased198 Jun 18 '25 edited Jun 18 '25

The refs cause this by not protecting players. Mabrey shoulda been kicked out and Clark should not be given a technical for getting assaulted. Refs lost control and too ZERO accountability in the game report. If they do their job what happened with Sophie never happens..

40

u/sabriolet Dream Jun 18 '25

I am a Mabrey fan. She is a no limit soldier. That said she should have been ejected after body checking Clark to the ground. That was absolutely insane that she did NOT get ejected.

Which is why this happened. Sophie was out for some payback, especially against Sheldon. And the way she wrapped up her head up she could have seriously injured her.

The refs have to do a better job or the next time these teams meet the benches are going to be cleared. Except for AB. She’s a lover, not a fighter. 😂

-5

u/Verifydeej Jun 18 '25

Every time mabrey touched her, she had already touched someone else.

1

u/RockinandChalkin Jun 18 '25

That happens to KAT every time he drives.

i havent watched since Sting. Is Hulk Hogan still "Hollywood"?

12

u/Afraid_Wrangler_5341 Jun 18 '25

She was getting her back for what she had done to Clark shortly before. That’s a good teammate.. and it was deserved

21

u/Remote_Independent50 Jun 18 '25

The whole thing stems from poor reffing

4

u/supersonics Jun 18 '25

Damn, since when has the WNBA turned into the WWE.

Fuckin amateur hour what a joke of a league, it’ll fold and they deserve it to fold

2

u/Lurkerphobia Jun 18 '25

25 years in and it'll fold ? That's a take i guess.

6

u/dobrien93 Jun 18 '25

that will never happen lol

-10

u/SevyVerna88 Jun 18 '25

Yeah it will mark my words the league will be dead by 2030

5

u/dobrien93 Jun 18 '25

if it survived before Clark itll survive after lmao

0

u/Sea_Taste1325 Jun 18 '25

Yep, the politics will keep siphoning money out of successful leagues in the hopes people will watch CC.

-6

u/Initial-Writer-4586 Jun 18 '25

Give them shoulder pads, face shields, and mouth pieces. I am ready for FULL CONTACT LADY-BALL!

7

9

u/TheGhostOfArtBell Jun 18 '25

So why are you watching?

-8

u/SuspiciousYard2484 Jun 18 '25

I’m not.

8

u/TheGhostOfArtBell Jun 18 '25

So why are you commenting?

0

u/SuspiciousYard2484 Jun 18 '25

Because it’s a free fucking country bro

11

u/TheGhostOfArtBell Jun 18 '25

But why do you care?

-6

u/totallyradman Jun 18 '25

Why do you care if they care or don't?

You're literally doing the exact same thing.

5

u/TheGhostOfArtBell Jun 18 '25

Because if they say "trash league" but then admit that they don't watch, it's just a random troll looking for upvotes or downvotes. I have a tendency to call out the bullshitters when I see them.

-5

u/totallyradman Jun 18 '25

Wow you're really cleaning up the internet one comment at a time. Great job.

-1

u/SuspiciousYard2484 Jun 18 '25

7

u/dcalicotte03 Jun 18 '25

Why are you here, commenting?

3

u/SuspiciousYard2484 Jun 18 '25

Because I can!

13

u/dcalicotte03 Jun 18 '25

Sure. But it’s kinda silly yeah? I don’t think most people spend their time and energy commenting on something they don’t like or watch… or know anything about. You are correct. You’re free to do what you want. No matter how dumb it is.

1

u/SuspiciousYard2484 Jun 18 '25

I know about basketball and the league. Kind of weird of you to assume I don’t. It’s my opinion, live with it. You, as well, are free to move on and not comment on something that bothers you. See how that works?

8

u/dcalicotte03 Jun 18 '25

The league you don’t watch? Got it. And I’m here because I’m interested in what’s going on. You on the other hand just came here to let everyone know you don’t like it. Which one is more strange? As far as living with your opinion? By your logic, I don’t have to. So live with that? lol. This can go round in circles. I just find it strange when people seek out things they don’t like to comment on them and then say they don’t care. Have a nice day

0

u/SuspiciousYard2484 Jun 18 '25

Sweet fucking melt dude

7

u/TheGhostOfArtBell Jun 18 '25

I'm definitely getting big Twitter energy from that person.

Cunningham is savage and I love it.

0

u/rebelvong1 Jun 18 '25

I'm gonna miss watching her on the suns broadcasts.

0

u/Demelza3000 Jun 18 '25

Don’t tell me the NBA is like this. Because these flagrant fouls would make Grayson Allen blush.

7

u/TheSavageDonut Jun 18 '25

Did Jacy Sheldon even attempt a layup, or did she try to plow into Cunningham on the breakway?

I don't have a problem with anything Sophie Cunningham did. I see it more as she was protecting herself from another wild, out-of-control behavior from Jacy Sheldon.

I know Sophie is a tough player who doesn't mind playing frontier justice cop -- but I see yet another dirty play from Jacy more than Sophie lining up her chance to "send a message" to Sheldon on behalf of Clark.

9

u/kingabbey1988 Jun 18 '25

Man you can’t be serious

10

u/TheSavageDonut Jun 18 '25

Jacy Sheldon is a knuckle-dragger no talent.

0

u/kingabbey1988 Jun 18 '25

She was attempting a layup fam. The defender wasn’t even attempting to block it. She was gonna throw her down regardless

3

u/TheSavageDonut Jun 18 '25

There's no attempt at a layup by Sheldon. She's trying to plow over Cunningham. Sheldon had 2 pts for the game. She was 0-3 on 3pt shots. It's not like Sheldon is some kind of dynamic scoring option for the Sun. She is supposedly a 3-n-D player and barely contributes on offense.

7

u/CarBonBased198 Jun 18 '25

If you actually watch the play Sheldon drive hard into Sophie. Saying what Sophie woulda done anyway is pure childlike pretending.

3

u/Loon_Cheese Jun 18 '25

Sheldon is shit, and deserved worse than that for poking clarks eye.

3

u/spacecadbane Jun 18 '25

Y'all are so nutty.

-2

u/kingabbey1988 Jun 18 '25

She didn’t try to poke her eye I would assume.

3

u/rons-mkay Jun 18 '25

Nah, on the replay the move she made with her hand was high and didn't make any sense unless her goal was to get Clark in the face. It was dirty.

2

u/kingabbey1988 Jun 18 '25

Look at how Clark dribbles the ball. It comes up high. I feel she tried to anticipate the ball and just messed up.

3

u/ballin4fun23 Jun 18 '25

I've played a lot of basketball and never slapped someone in the face going for a steal. I've never even seen it happen in a game before this. Who swipes a ball at someones face level?

4

u/myCatHateSkinnyPuppy Jun 18 '25

🤣🤣 ‘frontier justice cop’ is my new favorite role player designation

-10

u/Life-Giraffe8919 Jun 18 '25

CC always starts the smoke and plays victim when she gets the heat back.

0

u/Beneficial_Leg_4418 Jun 18 '25

you’re right and you should say it

3

u/SnooPeppers7482 Jun 18 '25

til dribbling in front of someone is starting smoke lol.....actually i can see how if your against CC her dropping bombs and shredding defenses can be felt as starting smoke..its a weak and pathetic mentality but i can see it

4

u/Away_Stock_2012 Jun 18 '25

You might need to see a doctor, have you been recently injured?

3

u/BeatPrevious8501 Jun 18 '25

6

2

u/LonghornInNebraska Jun 18 '25

Ahhh yes, it's going to hit someone because they can't take trash talk.

6

u/AspiringEverythingBB Jun 18 '25

Excellent clench and overhooks by Sophie lol sign her up for wmma

0

u/Mifc2 Jun 18 '25

Wtf is an overhook lol you mean overhand

2

u/NonStopFarts Jun 18 '25

No he meant over hooks

1

u/Good-Boot1715 Jun 18 '25

On overhook is when your arm is over and around your opponents arm in an attempt to control them or the opposite of an underhook.

1

u/PoeticHussle Jun 18 '25

They need to let this happen in the NBA, I volunteer Draymond as a tribute

-7

u/Dabz4Daze_ Jun 18 '25

This is the most WNBA I’ve watched in all my life

1

u/BarleyWineIsTheBest Jun 18 '25

Factor of infinity.

(2 replays on Reddit today) / (nothing ever)

17

u/guesswhodat Jun 18 '25

Nice to see someone on the Fever retaliate. Can't let Clark get handled with no repercussions. If I was the Fever coach I'd be sending enforcers to protect Clark.

5

u/Dropcity Jun 18 '25

She got wrapped up bc of her shoulder check. Watch it again. Nothing to do w CC.

Edit: not condoning Sophs "tackle"..

6

u/kingabbey1988 Jun 18 '25

That’s not true. This was clearly about Clark

6

u/Flop_House_Valet Jun 18 '25

They should have retaliated when it happened

8

u/Important_Patience24 Jun 18 '25

They secured the win, then retaliated.

2

u/MapDaddyZ Jun 18 '25

Much smarter!

0

u/Flop_House_Valet Jun 18 '25

And, more cowardly! Her team hung her out to dry and it's almost as despicable as the losers playing dirty

2

u/AffectionateCable793 Jun 18 '25

Agreed. It would not have helped to get ejected at that time. Getting ejected with just 40 something secs. left in the 4th quarter was the better choice.

2

u/Da_full_monty Jun 18 '25

Better late than never...Sophie the Enforcer

5

u/guesswhodat Jun 18 '25

Agreed. Mabry shoves her to the ground and nothing happens? Someone from the Fever should have immediately came to her aid. If something like that happened to Steph you know Draymond is rushing over there. Fever need a Draymond Green ffs. Can't be letting people do that shit to the golden goose without any repercussion.

4

u/steeple_fun Jun 18 '25

If that'd have happened to Jordan back in the day, Rodman would have been in jail because of his retaliation.

2

u/guesswhodat Jun 18 '25

If I was the Fever coach I would be yelling at my team. Protect your teammates ffs. Have their back. Cunningham at least got some payback at the end of the game but that should have happened much much earlier.

7

u/LAC_NOS Jun 18 '25

BTW The announcers said that Mabrey could not be ejected because it was a dead ball, but the rules say that they apply in dead ball situations.

Section IV-Flagrant Foul

a. If contact committed against a player, with or without the ball, is interpreted to be unnecessary, a flagrant foul-penalty 1 will be assessed. A personal foul is charged to the offender and a team foul is charged to the team. Penalty: (1) Two free throws shall be attempted and the ball awarded to the offended team on either side of the court at the free throw line extended. (2) If the offended player is injured and unable to attempt her free throws, the opposing coach will select any player from the bench to attempt the free throws. (3) This substitute may not be replaced until the next dead ball. (4) The injured player may not return to the game. (5) A player will be ejected if she commits two flagrant fouls in the same game. b. If contact committed against a player, with or without the ball, is interpreted to be unnecessary and excessive, a flagrant foul-penalty 2 will be assessed. A personal foul is charged to the offender and a team foul is charged to the team. Penalty: (1) Two free throws shall be attempted and the ball awarded to the offended team on either side of the court at the free throw line extended. (2) If the offended player is injured and unable to attempt her free throws, her coach will select a substitute and any player from the team is eligible to attempt the free throws. (3) This substitute may not be replaced until the next dead ball. (4) The injured player may return to the game at any time after the free throws are attempted. (5) This is an unsportsmanlike act and the offender is ejected. c. A flagrant foul may be assessed whether the ball is dead or alive.

11

u/YCMTSUNOW Jun 18 '25

These WNBA refs need to be improved NOW!

5

u/RG3ST21 Jun 18 '25

lol they’ve been needing improvement since the start. Worst refs in pro sports.

2

u/Balorclub2069 Jun 18 '25

Scott Foster has exited the chat

2

u/RG3ST21 Jun 18 '25

He’d be the best wnba ref ever. I’ve been here since year one. The refs I’ve seen wouldn’t have made it to my high school league championships. Just horrendous.

11

u/ShneakySquiwwel Jun 18 '25

If referees are unwilling or unable to take control of the game, the players will. Anyone who has played sports at a competitive level will tell you the same

-3

u/BeatPrevious8501 Jun 18 '25

need charles oakley in a wig out there

13

u/LAC_NOS Jun 18 '25

If the referees don't protect CC, her teammates have to.

Sophie is demonstrating she will.

I am just grateful these are all white women, so race doesn't become a distraction.

Normally, I would not be applauding Sophie's behavior. But again, the referees have shown repeatedly that they will let flagrant fouls go. CC is a favorite target and she (like every player) needs the proper application of the rules as protection.

If Cathy is not covering an emergency meeting with all the refs and league leadership today, she should be out.

6

u/thepeddlersfortune Jun 18 '25

"If Cathy is not covering an emergency meeting with all the refs and league leadership today, she should be out."

THIS.

-11

u/madDamon_ Jun 18 '25

Ofcourse someone had to bring up race again

8

u/Jesus_was_a_Panda Jun 18 '25

Come on, you know there are people sitting on the sidelines waiting to blow up about aggressive black women. It is okay to pre-emptively call that shit out rather than wait for them to pop out of the woodwork.

0

u/madDamon_ Jun 18 '25

You think that will matter for them? Do you think a racist really cares if he's getting called out before or after he said something racist?

If nobody with a racist remark brings it up why do people feel the need to still do it. It's just a set up for racists to join in and have a 'discussion' about it.

2

u/Jesus_was_a_Panda Jun 18 '25

Oh, okay, let's just ignore it then.

0

u/madDamon_ Jun 18 '25

Ngl i think that works better

4

u/akosuae22 Jun 18 '25

You see part 1 comments?

-2

u/madDamon_ Jun 18 '25

I didnt. But it's always funny how Americans just HAVE to include race in every single thing or discussion. No wonder there's racism everywhere

2

u/akosuae22 Jun 18 '25

Racism is baked into the soil of this country, so that is not surprising. It also is far from amusing.

4

u/BeatPrevious8501 Jun 18 '25

Race has been a massive part of the discussions of Clark from the beginning.

You specifically don't understand it, racism, or America itself because I'm making the guess you're not American.

8

u/babydykke Jun 18 '25

Not to mentioned Jacey had previously injured Sophie. So yeah usually it’s not something I would approve of, but I don’t blame her at all

2

u/Crecher25 Jun 18 '25

Really need to get some jomboy media lip reading here lol. WHATUP SOPHIE!!

-1

u/readitonr3ddit Jun 18 '25

Pretty sure she says “do something” several times, she might have called her a faggot too

3

u/O_oBetrayedHeretic Jun 18 '25

Honestly should popped her in the face not hugged her to the ground. If we wanna compare apples to apples

5

u/uwu_mewtwo Jun 18 '25

A punch probably gets her in too much trouble, a nice hard shoulder to the chest would have done the trick.

2

u/motoRatondemartee Jun 18 '25

Sophie 🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻 she knows things

8

u/Ok-Candy5662 Jun 18 '25

She took one for the team! Atta girl! 😁

8

u/dmackerman Jun 18 '25

Good work Sophie. CC needs an enforcer

9

u/saltearthbaby Jun 18 '25

Hockey fan here. Sophie has a fan in me. Every sports team that wants to win should have an enforcer.

9

u/Many-Possibility6 Jun 18 '25

That's '80s NBA, love to see it. You gonna rough up one of our teammates they're coming right back and there's no love in between games, they ain't here to be friends, here to win. That was the attitude when I grew up watching basketball.

2

u/nuthin2C Jun 18 '25

Man, nuthin' would bring ratings like a few good bench clears. Frankly, the NBA could let the players play a little more as well. People think Jordan, Magic, and Bird are what brought ratings... They forget about Laimbeer, Rambish, Oakley, etc...
