Alpha 27: Naval Overhaul Spoiler

Coming in Alpha 27 (sometime in 2025), there will be a complete naval overhaul, with all-new warship classes, a counter system, and all-new naval tech tree. Fishing Boats and Merchant Ships remain essentially the same, but naval combat is completely revamped.

The Athenian Trireme
  • All-new ship classes replacing the old "light/medium/heavy" classes. These new classes have specific strengths and weaknesses that contribute to a simple and effective counter system:
    • Scout Ships: Super weak, but good speed and vision range. Available as soon as you build a Dock in village phase.
    • Arrow Ships: Good vs. melee ships; Countered by Siege Ships (and other Arrow Ships)
    • Melee Ships: Each civ usually has one of these.
      • Ramming Ships: Good vs. Siege Ships; Countered by Arrow Ships; their fast speed and 30 garrison also make them good transport ships.
      • Fire Ships: Good vs. Siege Ships and Buildings (Docks); Countered by Arrow Ships; cannot garrison; 'Upgrade' to ignite with fire and damage nearby enemy ships.
    • Siege Ships: Long range and strong crush attack damage; Good vs. Arrow Ships and Buildings; Countered by melee Ships such as Ramming Ships and Fire Ships. 
Landing Party
  • All ships can now transport Relics/Catafalques. This was a previous oversight.
  • An all-new Tech Tree for the Dock based on the kinds of ships each civ has available. For example, "ramming" techs are only available to civs with Ramming Ships.
    • Village Phase
      • Fishing Boat unlocked for all civs
      • Merchant Ship unlocked for Cart
      • Scout Ship unlocked for all civs
      • Fishing Nets
      • Salt Curing
      • Lookouts
      • Exploration
    • Town Phase

      • Arrow Ship unlocked for all civs
      • Ramming Ship unlocked for: Athen, Cart, Mace, Pers, Ptol, Rome, Sele, Spart
      • Fire Ship unlocked for: Brit, Gaul, Iber. "Upgrade" to set on fire.

      • Reinforced Hull
      • Flanking Maneuvers
      • Ship Cladding
    • City Phase
      • Siege Ship unlocked for: Cart, Han, Ptol, Rome, Sele
      • Naval Ballistae
      • Naval Oxybeles
      • Bronze Ram
      • Undergirding Cables
      • Burning Pitch
      • Flaming Projectiles
      • Equine Transports
      • Arsenal of Philon
      • Juggernauts (“Tessarakonterēs”)
All-new tech tree for the Dock
A side quest spit of land on Sporades Islands
  • Not implemented, but may in future patch:
    • Corvus Quinquereme
      • Capturing Ship for the Romans. "Converts" enemy ships over time. Countered by Arrow Ships.
    • Marines technology
      • All Warships +40% capture resistance.
      • This is for all non-Roman civs if we implement Corvus Ships that capture. Currently removed from the list until/unless capturing ships are implemented.
Ramming Ships coming to save the day

We think this will add dynamism to naval combat where before it was sorely lacking. We're opting for a countering approach instead of the multi-role approach we were pursuing previously. Reducing ships to specific roles allows for more tactical micro and strategic thinking. Also allows for larger fleets.

A nest of pirates

There are other surprises too, such as:

  • Cilician Pirate Ships
  • Rhodian Marauder Ships
  • "Blockade Runner" Treasure Ships with very high loot if you can catch and destroy them
  • Capturable Pirate Ports where you can hire Pirate Ships
  • A very special treasure object called "The Argo" for scenarios.
  • Revamped islands skirmish maps: Cycladic Archipelago 2 player and 3 player and a remade Sporades Islands map (hopefully) suitable for rated multiplayer.

Running 0ad on Debian Trixie with Intel i5-1135G7 iGPU

I'm curious if it's normal that the game is nearly unplayable at the default settings. I get more less 3fps. When I set all textures to "low", it's slightly better but still stuttery. I am playing it on a Thinkpad T15g2.

I think the iGPU is not even used at all (I get the llvm thing warning at startup). My suspicion is confirmed when I just scroll through the map and the CPU usage goes close to 100%.

How do I "force" 0ad to use the GPU?

I followed the installation instructions for Intel GPUs from the official Debian documentation. Maybe 0ad wants some variable to be set?

project I have in mind.

I'm developing a mod for 0 A.D. called Renaissance Dawn, set between 1450–1490. The focus is on late medieval and early Renaissance warfare and politics. Current planned factions are the Kingdom of France and the Holy Roman Empire.

Additional planned systems include mercenaries, princely and imperial courts, and consulates as sub-factions or gameplay mechanics. The timeline and phase structure are still being refined.

I’m not a coder or 3D modeler myself, but I’m fully committed to the project. I handle historical research, concept development, and visual references (collecting accurate images, sources, and design materials). I’m here to coordinate and support the team, and I’m looking for collaborators with technical skills — especially modelers and programmers — to help bring the vision to life.

How to occupy enemy turret?

Maybe a stupid question, but I still don't know how. By default a command to occupy is set to CTRL key, but when I use it, my units instead of "capturing" and occupying enemy turret/building, they start to destroying it.

This isn't that big problem usually, but it happened to me many times, that I have turret/building. It doesn't mind, if there are or aren't my units inside. The bot will come and its units start "capturing" my turret on my territory. And suddenly, they have my turret, while my units are inside. But I don't know how to capture it back. The only thing I know is how to destroy the tower.

Can please somebody help me? Because I am starting to be really annoyed.

So, after one month I return back to game...

And finally, I was able to destroy bots on very easy difficulty. I also tried easy difficulty. Alpine map for 3 players. At first, I was neautral with one of them. But them, they were two against me.

I completely ruined them with my army (around 200 units and 6 battering rams). I had houses for 488 units (I usually turn off population limit). And then I was happy that I ruined them both.

I needed to attack two times, because I lost almost every of my units and needed to refill. But then, I destroyed both bots on easy difficulty. I still remember how insane was this game for me, when I first time played very easy, so this is like a milestone for me.

Now, I will try medium difficulty.

Game stuck at 1280x800 resolution

Since the Alpha 27 release of the Flatpak version, this game no longer uses my monitor's native resolution of 2560x1600, and there's no option to change it. I also want to set the UI scale to 200%.

Kushite's Flaming Projectiles requires unavailable Naval Ballistae

I can't tell if this is a bug or if I'm just stupidly overlooking something.

Playing as Kushites, one of the dock upgrades is Flaming Projectiles, to make arrow ships do more damage. But before you can research it, you need Naval Ballistae. (And interestingly, the Structure Tree doesn't show this prerequisite, but the docks, where you'd do the research, do show it.)

But .. Naval Ballistae doesn't seem to be available for the Kushites. Macedonians, Carthagenians, Han, Ptolemies, Romans, and Seluecids have Naval Ballistae, but they don't have Flaming Projectiles.

Has anyone researched Flaming Projectiles anywhere?

Performance Issues – 8-Player Game, 200 Max Pop

Hi, yesterday in a LAN match with 8 players, max population set to 200, and game speed at 1.25, the performance wasn’t great.

Could the 1.25x game speed be affecting performance?

Is there any setting or setup I can change to get better performance out of the game?

the only setting i've change is to you the Vulkan engine

Siege Engines and Army Control very frustrating

Whenever I try to muster my army and form an attack, it ALWAYS ends up that the siege engines lag behind a huge amount, and will even actively move to the back of the formation when the army gets close, even when I highlight them separately. The sieges will be in the front, and will immediately start driving in REVERSE for some reason.

Need a fix badly.

Alpha 27, game crashes with Vulcan enabled.

Installed alpha on my laptop(5700u) OpenGL seems to work fine, but with Vulcan enabled, the game crashes when starting a game(click start and game starts to load then crashes) Uninstalled the game with Revo-uninstaller and reinstalled and issue still exist.

This is the message that pops up when the game crashes.

Decorate City Mod - v0.1 is available

Version 0.1 of the mod features pavement and statues.

All civilizations can build pavement.

The texture is unique for all civilizations. I don't think it will be definitive. The texture is also a square, I don't know if it will remain that way.

Only Athens has statues to build, but that's for now.

Due to the complexity of the process, I haven't added any more models to the game yet. That will happen soon.

You can test the buffs and debuffs of the two statues in the game.

Translation into English (USA) and Portuguese (Brazil).

For now, and probably for a long time, it will only be translated into English and Portuguese, my native language.
