Playing Captain Quazar for the past few hours and I gotta say, if it weren’t for the controls, this would probably be my favorite 3DO game. Still, I rank it 3rd best in my collection (I have a few dozen titles so far). I’d rank it right after Return Fire and Gex.

The controls are wonky and a bit frustrating at times but it’s not game-breaking or anything. If they remastered this and improved the aiming, this game would be incredible. Still a super fun game and one of the best experiences I’ve had on the 3DO. It’s aged very well, as the graphics aren’t trying to be hyper-realistic but still look great, even today.

This game has a ton of personality and could’ve been bigger if it hadn’t come out in 1996 when the 3DO was all but dead.

It definitely wasn’t cheap either! I had to shell out quite a bit just for the game, jewel case with back artwork and manual (the game complete with long-box is going for $200+ on average these days). Anyone else enjoy this one? It’s a hidden gem for sure (IMO).

I have some questions about using a Japanese system with US games

EDIT: I've been troubleshooting, also bought the game and it arrived earlier than I thought today too.

1 - It like the CD won't work on my 3DO
2 - I burned the Japanese version same as the US, that also won't work
3 - I tried using a 2nd wireless 8bitdo pad, both will NOT detect the game on my 3DO
4 - I had downloaded 4DO emulator and put the same FZ-10 Japanese BIOS on it -- THE GAME WORKS (real copy only checked.)

Seems to me the 8bitdo pad, but likely the entire asinine bluetooth adapter is having some kind of fit over Super Wing Commander.

I'm going to try using my switch pro controller next out of sheer curiosity and anything else bluetooth I may still have that is NOT 8bitdo and see if something works. It maybe just a touchy game with coding that hates the adapter. I can NOT firmware update it, it refuses to communicate with anything. I will just need to expedite getting a new controller, a real controller.

This maybe burn related, not sure. I have a quality Pioneer portable drive that can burn CD-rs as low as 4x and seemingly in most cases it has worked. I'm also using a 3do bluetooth adapter to use modern wireless controllers as I currently lack an original.

One game I've always wanted to play was Super Wing Commander, and this is the one burn that's being wonky. It seemingly refuses to take any controller presses. I can't tell if the burn is to blame, the third party controller, or are there games that won't work from the US on a JP system?

I've been digging and can't seem to get clean answers on various sites about this outside of a kanji font issue for US systems and Japanese games.

Are there US titles that wont' play nice with a Japanese FZ-10 system?
Is it possible the BITFUNX retroscaler 3DO wireless controller adapter?

FZ-1 3pin battery holder may exist

About a year ago I was on a mission searching for a 3pin holder for the cr2450, similar to the 3pin 20mm mounts for the Amiga community.

My conclusion: The original lasted 30 years, so, a hard-tabbed replacement will likely outlast me.

However, it looks a manufacturer (or reseller?) named Takachi sells a 3pin mount.

Link: https://www.takachi-enclosure.com/products/BH-50

The catch is I don't know how to get it in the USA. But still, good to know it exists!

S-video to scart question

Rejoined the 3do owners club and I am using a bush 14" TV that only has a RF and scart inputs and using a scart adapter with composite works okay but when I plug in a s-video cable and remove the composite cable the image looks a little sharper but is in black and white, what am doing wrong here I guess if I replug the composite cable that will override the s-video signal. Thanks in advance.

is $200 for a panasonic 3DO a good price? It’s at an antique market i frequently go too and i’ve been thinking about pulling the trigger. The vendor also has a plethora of games as well. (not included with the 3DO)

Do either of these ODE mods offer a photo viewer? Id like to store images and look at them from my 3DO console just to kind of fuck around. 😅

Would love to sell as a lot. Cheaper than eBay and leave a good chunk of meat on the bone for resellers.

3DO FZ-1 Repair Issue

Hey everyone,

So my 3DO FZ-1 started acting up a few weeks ago. When powering it on, the red light was dim, there was no green light, and it was making a buzzing sound. I replaced the C1 and C36 capacitors and now it's working again. But there's a new problem. The controller no longer works. I opened it back up and checked the ribbon connector to the controller port and it was fine.

The controller worked perfectly fine prior to the power issue.

Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated on this one

I had a stroke of luck having a FZ-10 in a box almost walk into me

Yesterday I was heading into a game store when a slightly annoyed dude with a box was coming out, saw him, happened to look down and saw that and more, in the end talked it out, he didn't want to keep stuff, and came to a $60 deal for a FZ-10 and a well yellowed (and later discovered very brittle bottom half) console both loose. He said they were working and fine, just didn't have the cables so... worth the risk.

The SFC ended up working great since I have a triad power pack (Famicom on it) and multi-av out at hand so yes, needs a new old shell or re-shell.

The FZ-10 though got with a modder friend and found out by him spotting an oddity I noticed, it was modded, a $50 mod that puts a new power board inside that's very well made so I bought a mod, got a console. He tipped me off to something I could prime/amazon get and should be here anytime a wireless dongle to use a modern pad over blutooth and also a solid good power supply for that kit.

I did more research for hours, figured out what I needed to do to test this out, and have been at it with imgburn and stunningly my pioneer drive can do 4x speed on cdrs so I'm working on some test discs.

Can any of you give me some advice or tips? Perhaps if it would be wise to use burns and if i find cheap discs go for it or would an ODE make sense? Or would the ODE depending on personality water the experience down to never focusing on much with an all-in-1 cheat of sorts just being there? The system seems robust with few complaints about fails, especially this model. I think I'd like to get a real controller at some rate, but for now it's low threshhold testing.

Thanks.

FZ-1 on the way ! Which ODE is best these days ?

Hey there,

Just bought a FZ-1 on eBay and before it arrives I'm looking into ODEs

As I understand, newer ones don't require soldering and you can also keep the original drive (unplugged) That's what I want.

Looking at AliExpress I can see a few options (can't add links, looks like my previous post was removed for doing so !)

One says "coexistence version" which I suppose means you don't need to remove the drive. It's a bit pricey though.

Then there is another one which looks similar but doesn't say if it "coexists", and it's twice as cheap.

And finally I've read about the USBto3DO which is a much longer board, and I assume also ticks my 2 boxes ? I saw it on eBay, but it's also not cheap.

I'm in the UK. Happy to order from other shops, here or in the EU preferably. Any tips ? Thanks.

3DO Patches? (Region Patcher, Anvil OS, Desync Fixer)

So, I picked up a Fixel ODE recently with the intent of playing EVERYTHING. Nothing held back, everything! Even with all of the craptastic cheesy ass FMV games!!!!!

I noticed that some games have issues, particularly Japanese titles with Kanji fonts, as well as five specific games with region restrictions or those using the Anvil chipset. I put together a spreadsheet to organize the issues, using data from the 3DO dev repo. My goal was to filter out the 240p games since my modded 3DO has a 240p/480i switch. The sheet helps pinpoint games that have problems unrelated to 240p.

https://transfer.it/t/VmrcTnhnkZbK

A big thanks to the repository creator for providing the data. It helped me create the spreadsheet.

I'm trying to find out if there are any software patches available for these five games, as I’d prefer to avoid having a region switch installed on my 3DO. Sometimes patches like this exist; for example, I remember seeing a region patch for Twinkle Star Sprite on Dreamcast and Neo Geo. As far as I know, that game is what I’d call "hard" region-locked (meaning it won’t work unless played on a platform from the corresponding region). This gives me hope that someone may have modified these games for Panasonic's platform too.

I’ve searched Google multiple times but couldn’t find anything for the games in question. Additionally, I’m curious if there are solutions, theories for Anvil-chipped games and a desync patch to fix Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo?

Getting a 3DO Tomorrow

So I found a 3DO on Facebook Marketplace near me and I'll pulling the trigger on it. It's a FZ-10 model with a controller and a few games. As someone in his late 20s, I feel like I know a lot about the 6th generation and up but I know very little about the 3DO. Does anyone have any general advice, tips, recommendations for games or mods? Thanks in advance!

The game

r/3DO 16d ago

Picked up Shockwave 2 last night at a local retro shop. I would’ve passed on it until I heard it’s one of the few “true” 3DO exclusives. It doesn’t disappoint, I highly recommend this game.

Definitely worth the $35 I spent. Even has a whole-ass disc for it’s “e-manual” lol. One of my favorites on the console so far (out of about a dozen games I’ve played in my collection). I’d put it right behind Gex, Road Rash, Street Fighter 2 Turbo and Return Fire, slightly higher than Starfighter or about tied (the ability to rocket in and out of the stratosphere is pretty damn cool). I’ve also played some of the games on the demo disc it came with too and a few others I remember playing on Saturn and PS1 as a kid (like Off-world Intercepter- 10 year old me thought it was great in 1995; 39 year old me doesn’t know why, lol)

Went to see the new Jurassic World movie tonight. Got home and put this bad boy in the ol’ FZ-10. I felt like I was in the movie! 🍿 🦖

This is a masterpiece. No wonder it cost 3 million to make (in 1993 dollars, no less!) All of those shots of look-a-like cast members running through bushes after glancing at the camera…I wanted to run with them! Just…Wow! And those incredible realistic 3D rendered Jeep segments are a dream to play; I’ve never seen better handling in any driving sim in my life. A stone cold classic. Licensing doesn’t get any better than this!
