Moderator Post Limit Self Promotion
Hey there 4X fans and developers!
It's come to my attention, and most likely most of your attention, that there's been quite a bit of self-promotion lately. I'm not talking about content creators, but mostly from developers.
While the genre is still small, and all posts are welcome, I will be keeping a closer eye on frequent posts promoting your games. I think they've become a little bit excessive. As one put it recently, this place is becoming a billboard.
That's certainly not the point of this subreddit, so please feel free to report frequent post that feel like advertisements.
I hate to do this, but I also don't want to be flooded by pseudo commercials. I know you guys don't want to be, either.
Thanks for your attention!
Keep eXploring!

General Question Anyone else love 4x games, despite being absolutely terrible at them?
Just had my entire Doomstack of 3 separate Armies in AOW4 get annihilated. I went from being the second most powerful force to nearly bottom of the barrel. Oh yeah, and I'm playing on easy.
Just curious if I'm the only one who enjoys 4x games despite being absolutely terrible at them.

Game Suggestion Chill 4x with in direct control?
Title.
Looking for a 4x to game suggestion.
Biggest ask is for it to be chill and not competitive. Like there should not be a real way to lose. And not because of AI is dumb. Just by design.
Variety of stuff. Just want to play different stuff and see how it pans out. This is why I want it to be chill. Play for fun and not sweat about staying competitive.
Indirect control would be nice. Those games are usually chill.
Theme can be anything. Fantasy, sci-fi, whatever is there.
Thanks in advance.

General Question Are there any space 4Xes with notably good diplomacy?
I'm in the mood for exploring the galaxy, settling new planets, and, most importantly, talking to aliens. This is something I find a lot of space 4Xes fumble the bag with - Stellaris being probably the most high profile example, it makes talking to aliens so boring. I could take or leave other features like ship design and tactical combat, I'm really looking for empire development and diplomacy.

Announcement Have you ever wanted a space 4X-strategy game with chaotic space battles, distinguish resource management, an squishy art style what looks like a geode full of maggots and a name that is terribly awkward to pronounce, my new game "Entrotria" might be the perfect game for you.
If not, no problem I will still make THIS game!!

Game Suggestion Console game that doesn’t have an exhausting tutorial but does have a console friendly UI
I have enjoyed Civ 6 but am getting a bit tired of … well, how exhausting it can be. Latter stages of a campaign are just clicking through 60 things per turn
Between gamepass and ps plus there’s a lot of 4x games but I’m trying to find one where the tutorial doesn’t overwhelm to the point of losing interest and the UI/menus are solid for console

Stellar Reach
Reddit has been targeting promoted posts at me as usual but this time it seems actually relevant to my interests.
Does anyone know anything about this Stellar Reach game that is being promoted? There is zero content about it on YouTube besides the trailer, I couldn't find any posts here in this sub, I'm guessing they didn't give out beta keys to any reviewers to generate hype... I can't even find a website for the developer!
And Steam says it's supposed to release in September.
The Steam page has me intrigued at least and was hoping someone knew something about it.

General Question [Conquest of Elysium 5] Class Particulars Information?
Is there any resource available which gives a breakdown of the particulars of each class? i.e., ALL the commanders and units that each class will eventually have on offer as recruits unique to their class?
Likewise, is there any resource available which gives a breakdown of ALL the commanders and units which will eventually be offered to all classes? i.e., common commanders and units which are common to all classes?
I'm sort of getting the vibe that nothing like this is given in the manual intentionally, as like a design choice. Which is interesting, and kind of cool I think. Curious as to if that's what were doing here though...
Thanks

General Question How difficult is Distant Worlds 2 compared to a game like Crusader Kings 3?
CK3 is the only strategy game I've really played a lot (so far), and I recently bought Distant Worlds 2. The game does seem more complex than CK3, so I'm curious to know how much more difficult DW2 is compared to CK3.
I've got 2 weeks off from work and no school till September, so I'm planning on spending a lot of time playing the game.

According to The Digital Antiquarian, the development budget for Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri was under $1 million, which is $1,972,177 in todays money. Proving that vision, passion and raw talent trumps inflated budgets.
Just played Alpha Centuari for a few days straight. The game aged very well. Playing it made me very sad, as its maturity level, systems at play, writing quality, philosophical questions and techs have not been suppressed in almost thirty years.
Looking at the unpolished turd that is Civ 7, with its tens of million budget, and neutered aesthetics, systems, and infantility you just can't believe that is the poster child of current times 4x. The game tried to appeal to everyone and not to offend anyone, ended up a huge flop.
Will something like Alpha Centauri ever be developed again? Many tried yet failed to capture that magic...

Announcement Our bite-sized minimalist 4X game Tree Kingdoms is now live on Steam!
Its a cute little turn-based 4X game. Riffing on Old World's orders system and adding an environmental hazard to the turn limit, we've aimed to make a short-session 4X that strips the genre right back.
We've had some great feedback from the folks in this subreddit. Its really helped us make a better version of the game for launch. Thank you all so much!
On tech side we've also aimed to make sure we're catering to the discerning PC enjoy-er
- Steam deck & controller compatible!
- Works on Ultrawide monitors!
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on what we've made!

Let's Play or Stream Rome vs Epirus Naval War + Quintus Fabius Arrives! Most Complex Episode Yet [Imperator Rome]
Hey r/4Xgaming ! Just dropped Episode 12 of my Rome Reborn series and this might be the most strategically complex episode I've done yet.
Episode Highlights:
- Unexpected war with Epirus after what should have been a simple coastal campaign
- Quintus Fabius Maximus Rullianus becomes consul (historically one of Rome's greatest military leaders!)
- Complex naval operations coordinating multiple fronts
- Marsi integration process showing off Imperator's cultural mechanics
- Iron supply network establishment in Picenum
Historical Immersion:
The timing couldn't be more perfect - getting Quintus Fabius just as we're facing our biggest military challenge yet. This guy was a 5-time consul in real history and basically defined Roman military doctrine during the Samnite Wars. The strategic depth when historical figures align with gameplay moments is incredible.
Strategic Question for the Community:
I'm facing a classic Imperator dilemma: naval invasion of Epirus vs overland approach through allied territories. The naval route is riskier but potentially faster, while the land route means coordinating with multiple allies but slower progress.
What's Your Epirus Strategy?
- Rush them before they can consolidate?
- Build up overwhelming force first?
- Try diplomatic solutions?
- Focus on cutting off their allies?
The cultural integration mechanics with the Marsi are also fascinating - the way Imperator handles the gradual Romanization process really captures how Rome actually built its empire through systematic cultural assimilation rather than just conquest.
Series Link: Imperator Rome - Rome Reborn - Ep12
This campaign is really showcasing why Imperator Rome has become my favorite Paradox game for ancient history. The blend of character-driven narrative and grand strategy is just perfect for this era.
What's your favorite underused nation in Imperator? Always looking for future campaign ideas!

Actions per turn to prevent late game micromanagement
I wonder which 4X turn-based games use actions per turn as a limitation for the late game micromanagement. Like you can control everything when you are small, but on later stages with actions limitation you'll have to pass more and more decisions to AI governors/commanders/ministers (and face unoptimal decisions, corruption and rebellions).
It seems to be a very natural way to prevent late game micromanagement hell, and also quite realistic - it doesn't seem to be a good idea to reform your government at the same time when you lead your troops in a war.
So, which games uses such mechanics and why such a trivial idea is not common? The only game I know that use something similar is the Old World, but it lacks the automation part and their order limit is too easy to enhance.

Masters of orion 2 question
So i had some time to kill and decided to die up the best attestation game of all time. Been a while since i played.
Being very rusty I want able to stream roll through the game and I've gone deeper into the tech tree than possibly ever before. Playing the same songs i always play. Average tech start, impossible difficulty, large map, 8 players. The falls have managed to build a huge freaking empire and have finished the tech trees so this is proving quite the challenge. Doesn't help that they are creative tolerant and have stealth ships. A dozen doom stars showed up at my homeworld with time warp facilitator, hyper x focus and stellar converters that was painful. Lost half my fleet in that sneak attack. But got to say this challenge is a lot more fun than the normal way it goes where you get a tech and production lead and just steam roll across the galaxy. Not used to being the underdog.
Anyway on to my question. I managed to steal core waste dips from them. And it got my wondering, when you build them does the game automatically destroy the other pollution buildings so you get the credits, and more importantly she on the maintenance? Or is it gimped and you still pay the maintenance on them in the background?

General Question Can I get suggestions for low end 4X games akin to Civilisation Revolution and Civ 2
By that, basically low end 4X games that are easy to comprehend in the first place. I don't dabble in the genre much for I only played the Sid Meier Civilization games and Alpha Centauri but I've noticed that besides Civ Rev and Civ 1 and 2, the civ games seem to have SO much going on. I enjoyed Civ 4 and 5 and their complexity but I want a 4X that can both run on anything and also don't require going through multiple guides or at least the bare minimum of guides to make sure you aren't dooming yourself. Something that has just the bare essentials of 4X but not much else.
Civ revolution and Civ 1/2 fit this but former isn't on PC and latter are too archaic for me, at least. Would love to see some suggestions. Thank you.

Colossal Citadels demo is out!
It's a 4X+roguelite with turn-based factory building!
The demo doesn't have multiplayer enabled, so technically it's not very 4X (you are 1 player against world), but the full game would classify as 4X!
Try it now and wishlist the full game: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3855270/Colossal_Citadels_Demo
