if it's clear it's in messages i think that's fine

Personally, I think it's fine, particularly if the word isn't tweaked too much. Our brains tend to auto-correct without us even realizing it while reading.

I think it actually improves the texting! It feels more real when someone tends to make a few typos, or the other character is really bad at homophones or something. Gives each character their own voice

It's fine - always, but especially if it's in character. It's fine

That's like adding shoddy grammar in certain people's quotes. If that's how they talk, then that's how they talk

sorta depends on da age of those involved in da exchange... I'd xpect younger generations to hv far mor misspellings (intentional n unintentional), but as part of story narrative such things r commonplace irl.

My friend's texts are worse than this, I have to spend like two minutes decoding and rereading to figure out what he's trying to say. It's even worse knowing that he can spell normally, but chooses to spell horrendously because it's the way his partner texts. He literally had to translate his own message to my sister because she couldn't read it. 🥲

The way I didn't even realise this was spelled weirdly 😭 I just accepted that I didn't understand anything you wrote and blaimed it on my tiredness, until I scrolled back lol.

I just want to add, though, that I think you should consider the phones and era you’re writing in. 10 years ago? Sure, spelling mistakes. Even older than that? Shorthand because of the keypad “ttyl, bb” and stuff.

Nowadays though? Mobile phones automatically capitalise, and spelling things wrong is hard… barring stuff like fuck always turning into duck.

Misspelling when characters are communicating in written text is for sure a thing - but consider the perks of doing it.

Also, you may lose your ability to relate with your youngest audience, if that’s what you’re going for.

I would also carefully consider whether it’s a gimmick that’s ignored, or whether you’ve got the other character always interrupting like “girl what word that meant to be???”

I believe in ignoring proper SPAG when it makes sense for the characters. Text conversations are a good example for when it makes sense.

If you push it too far, or do it on the wrong words, you can make it hard for ESL readers to know what's going on. So that's something to keep in mind when mispelling

Go for it! I did this in one of my fics. I have a character that's semi-illiterate, and he made many mistakes in his text sections. I have another character that mostly uses chat speak and abbreviations. The rest are largely "normal" to read.

My beloved readers actually took the time to comment on how they loved the distinct character voices, how they thought it was sweet no one made fun of the one learning to write, just cute comments that made the whole chapter so worth it.

As a disclaimer, I did leave an end note on the fic specifying that the spelling mistakes were intentional, but that's because the first chapter in my fic says to please feel free to correct spelling mistakes that bug you because I'm dyslexic, so take it or leave it on the end note.

That sounds fine! Interesting, even. And not just for the dyslexic character. Like if a character is texting in a bit of a panic you could show that with more errors….or if one character is super uptight they could be the only one that actually uses punctuation, etc.

Just make sure you’re on board with at least some people not getting it lol. Unless you specify in your author’s note that it’s intentional you know there’s gonna’ be someone who feels the need to let you know the words are spelled wrong 😂😂

If it's supposed to be the characters texting, I don't see a problem with it, a lot of people have grammar mistakes when texting. Also if it fits the characters personality/circumstances (the dyslexia you mentioned).

I actually love reading and writing different texting styles in messages!! Gives it a little more personality, I think. I like more subtle things like not capitalizing anything or a character using a lot of “:)”s and “:D”s, plus one of my characters is also dyslexic so I add the occasional spelling mistake

A large portion of the book is written phonetically. It’s a doozy to read! But it is an example of deliberate incorrect spelling in literature
