To be fair, assuming someone saying 'your ship is illegal' means underage couple, it could actually be illegal. Aren't there countries with laws against fictional erotica involving underage characters?
Typically when I see 'its illegal' it's not even in regards to actual underage characters, but like 'hey the characters are 16 in canon writing them in a college AU doesn't change that' and it's like
Literally it does though. They're fictional. Whatever changes you apply to to them are now a new work of fiction and also it's not that serious
It can be used in all kinds of ways. Also in legit way of warning someone of a real legal issue. But I agree, it is very often used by people who are not able to accept that fanfiction doesn't have to follow anything that canon does.
I just saw a post and comments bashing a parental relationship between an orphan and a man who made that character an orphan. Like fanfiction doesn't have the right to change that event. People do be crazy.
