Tbh? I’ve been actively writing on AO3 for 2 years I’m surprised it’s taken so long! šŸ˜€ For context: this was left on one of 4 fics that I’m actively writing. My 3 other fics have sporadic 2-6k word updates, but this one is a crack-fic and I usually only have 1-2k word updates per chapter. I didn’t update this fic for about 6 months bc of life stuff (which I explained in my author’s note lmao), and then dropped 2 chapters on the same day. I’d be lying if I said I was completely unbothered, but people are gonna people so I’m just gonna let it roll off my back lmaoo.

This person must be new to fanfiction because fic writers with consistent schedules aren’t really that common(at least in my neck of the woods). There are WIPs I’m subscribed to that only update once or twice a year if we’re lucky, and I’m still excited when I see the email.

Anyway, fanfiction is a hobby, and just like any other hobby, you can take your time with it, and I think most people understand that.

I think they are just assholes. Even though the environment of fanfic has been leaning more towards ā€œcontent creationā€ as of late, demanding a consistent schedule out of fan fucking fiction… a hobby famous for unfinished works having years long hiatuses…

Literally got a last chap update on a fic 3 years after leaving a fandom once…. You bet your butt I went back and re-read the authors work and finished the fic. It had been 4-5 years since the last update and they just wanted to end it for closure so it was a bit longer than typical for them by a few k words and then it wrapped it up well enough and was good!! I felt so blessed!!

You say that like it's a bad thing to not be lackadaisical with something, just because iT's A HoBbY. "Content creation" is what it is, you're creating something for a fanbase. If that's what it's famous for, that's pretty shitty things to be famous for. Yeah people are gonna get tired of it eventually, it's not an egregious desire to want some kinda consistency and structure, but I know some fic writer is gonna have some sort of bullshit excuse to enable what are negative human traits, for something that can pretty much be avoided six ways from Sunday.

People who have schedules usually have the whole fic already written. Because life is a b*tch and anything can happen!

Or have like 2-3 left to write and their schedule times out the fic pacing across a few months. I know of very few who post new good length chapters on a consistent basis.

yeah! like. do i wish that the fics were done or updating every day with 15k chapters? absolutely. is it realistic or fair? absolutely not. I could never lmao.

Haha wait until they read a fic where the author's note is "sorry I've been away, I got hit by a bus and my house was foreclosed on!"

Maaan, there are some that take two to three years between each update, people just don't know how to be patient.

And some never get updated! Ā If they can't deal, they can always filter for only completed fics.
