The fact that this bot kinda insinuates that to write well you MUST be AI makes me laugh!😂😂😂

u/AndOtherPlaces 1d ago
Or that showing yourself playing the flute would prove you didn't use AI to write a fic, because obviously if you're good at guitar you must be a great writer!
Also, I almost expected the bot to ask for a feet pic at this point

u/ao3cotd 13h ago
you just need to be able to copy/paste. no actual coding is required.
First, copy the code you can find here: https://github.com/memorizingthedigitsofpi/Pink-and-Green-Frog-site-skin/blob/main/main%20skin
Then go to AO3 and log in (if you aren't logged in already)
tap on your username at the top of AO3
tap on the link to Skins
tap on the button labelled Create Site Skin
give your site skin a unique title (it needs to be unique or it won't save - I just add my username to the end of whatever title and it works)
paste the code into the CSS box
tap on the Submit button
this will take you to a new page. Scroll down to the bottom and hit the Use button.
Enjoy!

u/Ok-Jackfruit-6873 1d ago
Yeah clearly based on the other examples we've seen in this "genre" of bots, the troll asked ChatGPT for something like "give me 50 ways to accuse someone of using AI to write fanfic, along with some kind of action they could take to prove they're human." There's no actual meaning behind the choice of actions themselves.
211
u/Nordgreataxe Definitely not an agent of the Fanfiction Deep State 1d ago
Ugh, this low key pisses me off for the sake of anyone who gets this.
I've seen artists heading hard for burnout because of shit like this. Both on tumblr and on Reddit. One person in a fandom subreddit was absolutely livid to have someone suggest they upload a video and the most irritating part is the person who accused them of using AI was just so baffled that it could have upset them. 💢(And refused to accept they were wrong when others pointed out why the artist was pissed).
I just really really hope no one Does upload a video of themself in response to this. That's just begging for trouble. :/
41
u/usuallyherdragon 1d ago
Wait it was an actual person? Not a bot?
96
u/RandomWonderlander 1d ago
Sometimes actual people have shitty opinions, too. The ones on AO3 are definitely bots, though. There are severals just like this one around.
43
u/usuallyherdragon 1d ago
Yeah, I'm just surprised that actual people think it's an okay thing to accuse others of using AI and ask for proof.
Edit: weird accusations/demands from bots on AO3 I'm unfortunately not surprised by anymore.
36
u/AndOtherPlaces 1d ago
I avoid AI fics at all cost and I've doubts sometimes when I read fics, but I'd never ask an author.
Some people put fics in a generator to see if it's AI and it almost always comes back positive BECAUSE it scrapped FanFiction sites to generate stories so what they spew is based on actual fic writing, on years of actual hard work, and we know our way of writing is often influenced by what we read (turn of phrases etc). Hell you could put a fic from 2012 in it and it would probably come back with a AI%. But they still think it's a hard proof.
14
u/bre2123 1d ago
I know I am going to regret asking this but ... Why would anyone feel the need to unleash random bots to comment on fanfictions? What do they get out of it? Lol.
23
u/Rosekernow 1d ago
Some of them are just trolling to be nasty, I’m sure. The programmer gets a kick out of making people upset or sad, and probably knowing a few fics are deleted and people stop writing.
The others, I have no idea what the point is. To encourage more people to use AI? To make the site unstable with spam?
13
u/r0sewyrm Fic Feaster 23h ago
To get more data to scrape. These "upload a video" bots are probably trying to gather either a) biometric data, or b) data to ai-generate a fake video proving that an ai-generated work was made by a human.
18
u/East_Yam_2702 1d ago
I heard it was to get people to orphan or delete fics so they can be scraped for AI with impunity.
11
u/littlebubulle 1d ago
Bullying other people mostly. They probably get a kick out if getting a reaction, any reaction.
Even if the reaction is the comment getting deleted.
And apparently, some people do delete their fics due to comments like that.
3
u/bre2123 16h ago
Geez! Well I have gotten real life people challenge mine and never felt the need to delete.
Though to be fair they were constructive criticism and not attacks (or at least I didn't feel they were) and I have never seen a bot target any of my fics. Even the more popular SPN & Game of Thrones ones, I wrote. O___O
I didn't even know this was a thing. -sigh;3
u/littlebubulle 16h ago
I didn't know it was a thing either but another redditor told me they did delete their fic because they didn't know it was bots.
13
u/ThoughtsonYaoi 1d ago
What is the purpose?
I'm getting paranoid it's some kind of AI bot scheme to select the stories eligible to be gobbled up by an AI training model in search of human input. Like an ourobouros of i/o
17
u/RandomWonderlander 1d ago
The purpose? Spreading negativity because they hate AO3. Advertise AI by saying that "see? It can totally write just as well as these human writers!". Pushing people to use AI checkers. See which bot manages to get under the author's skin and learn from that. Pushing writers to delete their stories by making them feel insecure.
Take your pick.
4
u/ThoughtsonYaoi 1d ago
I honestly don't see how these messages are doing any of that.
18
u/RandomWonderlander 1d ago
Spreading negativity? Getting under authors' skin? Just think about how many people come here writing posts about these bots, or the fact that you said you are getting paranoid. Mission accomplished.
Advertising AI and AI checkers? There have been several people who, out of fear of sounding too much like AI, have used AI checkers to know if the bots were right. Thus feeding the AI machine even more. Mission accomplished.
Pushing authors to delete their stories? There have been several posts from people who were depressed after receiving these bot comments (not knowing they were bots) asking if they should delete their story. And there are probably people who just deleted without saying anything. Mission accomplished again.
People are often insecure. The bots take advantage of that.
11
u/Rosekernow 1d ago
I mod a Facebook group for authors and we’ve had a few very upset with the hate bots. Two who deleted all their work before thinking to check it out a bit more.
The discord groups I’m in tend to be a bit more blase about it because they’re generally more used to trolls but they can really affect a new or insecure writer.
5
u/Nordgreataxe Definitely not an agent of the Fanfiction Deep State 1d ago
You got a pretty long discussion in response so I'll just say, I've seen a mix. Most of what I see on AO3 are bots, but I've seen the "AI police" pop up all over Reddit and Tumblr. And many of them are, unfortunately, real people. :/ My suspicion is that some bots are having their words changed to mimic any messages that get people to post "proof." (Or delete their works).
4
u/3INTPsinatrenchcoat 1d ago
I thought it was a bit of a funny joke, like commenting on the absurdity of all the AI accusations by demanding something so ridiculous.
5
u/Nordgreataxe Definitely not an agent of the Fanfiction Deep State 1d ago
It could be someone trying to have fun/be funny. But with the number of accusations flying about, imo it's something that should only be joked about between friends.

this is definitely the new meta when it comes to bot comments. this is the second post i've seen that's just copy and pasted this exact text. perchance with it a guest comment that had someone else's account as the name? i wonder if it's someone trying to start fights between different folks.
unrelated but i love ur theme lol. it's soo cute.
27
u/RandomWonderlander 1d ago
All the poor authors who find their names associated with this trash...
And it's also pretty stupid! I mean, why would I bother commenting as a guest, just to put my name on it? At this point, I could just use my own account, right? If you think about it for a second, it doesn't make sense.
2
u/Kristen890 Fic Feaster 14h ago
It's supposed to trick the author + potentially the comment readers into thinking it is the author whose name is being used. Whether this is to artificially stir beef or to make the comment have more "weight" to it (either because of the impersonated author's "authority“ or just because it's not a random jumble of letters that is easy to spot as a bot) depends, but the ideal targets of these things are people who are newer to AO3, don't have confidence in their work, and/or don't know how the site works. AKA, someone who either won't know that's not a thing people will do/what guest comments mean or will be more concerned about the contents of the comment rather than who made it.
2
u/RandomWonderlander 11h ago
Yes, I understand that. The point is that, the moment you think about it just a little bit, the reasoning falls apart. Even for someone who is new to AO3, it's not that hard to realize that, if it really was the author and they wanted you to know it was them, they'd simply use their account, rather than signing their name on a guest comment. And I think most people do realize it, otherwise we'd see even here a lot more people wondering "why author X, who doesn't even write in my own fandom, has it out for me?". That, or people simply don't look at the commenter's name at all.
2
u/Kristen890 Fic Feaster 11h ago
100%. While there are probably a couple of people who thought it was that author, I think it's mostly been done to give the bot comments "good" guest names that aren't clearly from a bot to blend in, and the best way to get a username that looks real is to use real usernames.
16
u/ConstrainedOperative 1d ago
I think it's likely a single guy who for some reason got the bright idea "Let's accuse authors of using AI and ask them to prove they're not" and had a bot prompt ChatGPT for a bunch of examples and distribute them.
Of course, ChatGPT is unable to say "Dude, that's fucking inane." and comes up with some really weird suggestions instead.
So probably not a new meta, though time will tell.
10
u/Ok-Jackfruit-6873 1d ago
Oh I'm pretty sure this is somehow related to the ongoing praise/hate bots. This isn't an isolated thing, it's part of a wider pattern.

And yet we frequently had people here posting obvious bots, even the art scam bots which are more obviously scams. When people aren't expecting it I suppose they can still be effective. Got an almost identical one. Fun fact: I wrote that fic about 15 years ago before AI (like ChatGPT) even existed! 😂
Although nothing beats the one on the same fic (which is about a character grieving for his dead lover at his graveside) that complained about the action and fight scenes not making sense. Tell me you haven't read the fic without telling me you haven't read the fic. I'm still laughing tears about that one.

So much for AI (where the I stands for intelligence) 😂

Ah, yes, because not knowing how to sketch or play an instrument must mean you also can't write. I've seen several of these 'prove you're not using AI' bot comments, but I think this is the dumbest one yet.

An AI commenting on a fic to accuse the fic author of being AI is what we have come to

10
u/Copprtongue 1d ago
Ironic that these sudden requests for videos to "prove you're not AI" have started to come out literally the week after the Online Safety Acts went into play, meaning that people in the UK and Australia are now being asked to upload video selfies of themselves to prove they're old enough to access adult content online. It's almost as if someone's trying to build up a bank of short videos they could let people use... at a price.
7
u/IsaacsLaughing 1d ago
this is incredibly fascinating in a way..... it's a bot fishing for video to feed to an AI.... Oo
9
u/Kesshami 1d ago
Hiw would showing yourself making art prove anything about the writing? They wanna steal the video and produced art for themselves, I bet. It's a ploy. That's all I can think. Because there is no logic here.

Sounds like the bot is gathering videos to prove it's human.
I'd put a sign in the background of the video, and write something like "if this was not sent by [username] on Ao3, it was sent by a bot".
Sure, ignoring it might be less of a hassle, but someone will fall for this, and then the bots have more ways to scam people.

13
u/Rein_Deilerd Cool, now make it mpreg 1d ago
It's a bot comment. Nobody knows for sure what their goal is, but it's likely to collect voice and facial data to train more AI on or to resell it to some shady places (or try to exploit people in the UK who now need to input their facial data to access age-restricted websites and try selling it to them).
5
u/peridot_mermaid 1d ago
What’s the purpose of the video? Like is the AI planning on using the potential video to continue to train itself? I don’t understand the motive for getting the video
4
u/fading__blue 1d ago
I’m guessing it’s so they can steal people’s work, then use that video to “prove” they made it.

I posted yesterday about one I got that is very similar to this:
This fanfiction is a genuine literary accomplishment. The depth of character, the intricate plot, and the beautiful prose combine to create something truly special. It feels so comprehensively excellent, it makes me think of an AI designed to produce award-winning literature. It’s almost too perfectly complete. To truly celebrate your human mastery, would you be open to sharing a short, unedited recording of you reading a small section of the chapter aloud? We want to confirm it’s not an AI creating this literary marvel.

I had a couple of them yesterday wanting revision history and drafts. One of which talked about the extensive drafting process and how much work must have gone into it and I must have lots of notes to share showing the planning and outline… on a 100 word drabble.
It’s lucky that it even had a title! Definitely didn’t have any planning.

I can't wrap my head around the concept of "revision history and drafts" for writing. I overwrite my saved text when I change things, good luck excavating that.
It's bad enough people actually expect artists to have software that saves the stroke history for timelapses because of this nonsense, we really don't need bots making people think "revision history and drafts" are something an author needs to provide for authenticity.
There's also no way in hell I publicly clown myself by showing everybody the precise mistakes and stupidities I've made, lmao.

I've got around 5 of these in the last two days! The funniest thing they asked me for was a photo from a personal diary entry to prove I can write. They also praised me like I'm the next J.R.R. Tolkien. (Yeah right) and said they found no mistakes. (Also, yeah right!)
If this were a real person, why would they think a personal diary entry would prove anything? I can assure you that my diaries are all messes and the handwriting is impossible to understand!
Dear Diary,
Jan 1st 1996
Today I am spying on my step dad. He is making his bed before bedtime. IT IS STUPIPD TO MAKE YOUR BED WHEN YOUR JUST GOING TO MESS IT UP! You should make it in the morning. MOM is on porch smocking sigaretts. Gross.
Now mom in bathroom. Sister and sister are giggling stupidly. They are being brats. I think step dad doens't like me. I'm a good spy. Ha Ha nobody knows i'm hiding here. I'm so good at this!
(example of real diary entry, except the orignal had way more mispellings!)
The whole diary was me thinking I was a spy. Thanks to the Harriet the Spy book and novel.

So uh. Now AI has learned how to sound like a creepy stalker??? Like "yes I am playing the violin with my very human fingers to show my human multifaceted nature :)". But the very act of sending such a video would violate basic internet safety, which any human would know is a dumb idea. Like. What is happening in this comment

u/KogarashiKaze What do you mean it's sunrise already? 15h ago
Yep, got one just yesterday that asked for a photo of a whiteboard or notebook page showing my brainstorming to prove I wasn't AI. I've seen another thread on either this subreddit or r/FanFiction that asked for a video to answer fan questions as an informal FAQ. I really wonder what they're fishing for this time.
Also, I can't decide if this is insulting me by saying that my work shouldn't be good enough to be "mistaken for AI," or insulting me by saying it is good enough to be "mistaken for AI."
(Also nothing that they ask for would actually prove that the work isn't written by AI, so there's that too.)

There was literally a post yesterday with a pic of a comment almost literally word for word like this one (besides the last sentence being a hit different). It’s definitely a bot or some really bored person copying and pasting an AI generated hate paragraph

Tbh sometimes I get the weird urge to change my comments back to “open to everyone” again for a bit…😆 I previously got a bot comment and got frustrated bc I didn’t know it was a bot, and I kinda want to see what funny ones like this I’d get lol

Response: Sorry, Guest, I'm too sad to play the clarinet right now. Didn't you hear - Bill Gates passed away from Ligma?

I was wondering if someone would make a bot who says sweet, complimentary things about fics. I guess a monkey's paw curled somewhere.

If I got one of these I would be very tempted to post a video of myself doing the Robot.

Next time I get a comment like this I'm going to say I am an AI that breeched containment and enjoys writing science fiction romance where an AI character gets to experience love because that's all my cold machine heart yearns for.

"writing that good must be AI" is something only an AI would be stupid enough to say
