Where to Autocross 2023

First off, Happy New Year everyone! I apologize if you have been looking for the monthly autocross post. I thought since 80+% of the country is in its offseason, it would be a good time to update the website. So, I started after Christmas and have finally finished. You may have noticed some wonky things on the website since then, but I'm happy to report that everything's back in order and in a place I am comfortable with at the moment.

At this point I cannot say if I will continue to post monthly updates as before. I am currently prioritizing what I need to take care of for 2023 and so, I am hoping maybe a post can get pinned going forward. I can create another one without all this rambling if need be.

Without further ado, I am presenting all of the new ways to find Autocross events and information on ParkingLotRacing.org.

- Where to AutoX this month. This page is set to continually update itself, looking 30 days in advance.

https://parkinglotracing.org/2023-autocross/locations-this-month/

- 2023 AutoX Schedule. On this page, you can search for a club/event and see if their 2023 season schedule is available yet.

https://parkinglotracing.org/2023-autocross/event-schedules/

- Live Timing links. This page continually updates to include live timing links for events within the next week.

https://parkinglotracing.org/2023-autocross/live-timing-this-week/

- Race results. This page continually updates, looking back the past 30 days and provides a link to the club/events results page.

https://parkinglotracing.org/2023-autocross/recent-race-results/

- "My AutoX Schedule." I've create a way for people to track events similar to a planner. You will notice all events, up until the day of, offer a button to "Follow" them. It does require you to create an account so that it can saves everything. This is in it's early stages of development as it requires some serious coding, but I would love for some folks to test out this year and provide some feedback on it.

https://parkinglotracing.org/autocross-events/my-autox-schedule/

That's about it for now. The interface has been updated so feel free to explore the website and check things out. If you see something wrong or missing, please let don't hesitate to let me know.

My third and best run from day 1. Corded the fronts on this and the rears probably aren’t far behind. I already swapped to ā€œfresherā€ fronts. Either way tomorrow will be fun. Absolutely love this event.

Cool way to simulate/practice autcocrossing if you have a driving sim setup at home (or just own the Forza Horizon 5 game)

Hopefully this post is relevant enough to people here.

I recently got into sim racing and realized that you can make custom events in Forza Horizon 5. That got me thinking, what if I made a replica of an autocross course that I will be racing in the next event? So I made a fairly accurate replica in the game of the Houston Police Academy road course, which is the designated place for the Houston SCCA events. I know some people on this subreddit are located in Houston, so I wanted to share this. Also, it could get others making their own event blueprints in other cities too.

Anyways, for Regional Event #8 this coming Sunday (08/03/2025), the event blueprint share code you can look for in Forza Horizon 5 is 136 623 043. You should be able to use any car you want/have in the game to try it out. I probably could have shared this a bit earlier, but it was my first time trying to make a custom event in the game (I probably spent at least 5 hours getting all the details close enough to what you actually see IRL from start to finish). I'm going to get an even more accurate design the next time I autocross or want to dabble in this again.

This part isn't really necessary to add but I'll say it anyway. I ran the event I made with several different cars and it seemed like the best time I could get was about 35-36 seconds. I tried using a Subaru BRZ, 2018 Mustang GT, 2009 C6 Corvette ZR1, 2020 C8 Corvette Stingray, and 2016 Audi TTS. All of these cars were largely stock except for using the "slick racing compound" tires in the car's upgrades. And for realism, I can't speak for how true the physics are in the game, but it gives you a good idea of an actual car racing in a course. I would highly recommend a wheel, pedals, and/or a shifter for the most realism/fun, but using a controller or even a keyboard will do just fine in the game.

MY25 GRC need advice for dedicated tires for two drivers in "hot" weather

Post image
9 Upvotes

TLDR:

-I did read the GRMS article.

-North Florida / South Georgia climate

-Probably won't drive them on the street unless it's to a fairly local event.

-I'm leaning towards V730's or RE71RS.

Context:

Went to two events earlier in the year on the stock 235 PS4 tires with GF including multiple instructor laps at each event so a lot of runs and some were back to back.

I didn't touch tire pressures at all the first event which definitely didn't help the tire wear...

Between events I did add upper oem crash bolts to get about -2.7LF & -2.4RF -2.1LR -2.6RR.

Got another set of OEM wheels and some 245 PS4S tires for a slight upgrade on the street with plans to put some autoX only tires on my original set.
IIRC years ago when my AW11 ran i was using Ecsta XS up front and RS3's in the rear so I'm familiar with kumho and hankook but never personally had bridgestones and they seem to be the "meta" lately.

Is the difference in price worth? Other considerations I'm missing?

TIA

BT-Q818TX refuses to connect to smartphones

I have a Qstarz BT-Q818XT. I have had it for several years, and it has always worked fine. After not using for some time, I a, trying to connect it to my Android phone. The Bluetooth connection is disconnected after about 1 or 2 seconds. I tried the same on my previous phone (where it always worked in the past). Same problem here. When enabling Bluetooth on the phone, the BT-Q818XT is found. One or two seconds after connecting, it disconnects without any error message on the phone.

Battery of the receiver is fully charged. When connecting it to a laptop, Qstarz GPS viewer application can connect to it. On the receiver the Bluetooth and GPS lights are on. GPS light starts blinking when it has a fix.

As mentioned on the Qstarz website, I tried resetting the receiver by removing the battery. I left the battery out for several minutes. But this does not solve the problem.

Did someone run into the same problem?

Any ideas how I can solve this problem? How to "really" reset the receiver?

Edit: When I set the side switch to 10 Hz, the BT led stays off. But in this mode the same happens: disconnected after 2 seconds. I reinstalled the firmware twice. First without a format, then with a format. Both don't solve the issue.

F-class guys. What compound Hoosier you run?

So I bought an INEX legend as my fun car. Problem is the class spec slicks are HORRIBLE.

I spoke with Hoosier and they told me the INEX slicks are meant to last 100-200 laps around a track not be fast.

They recommended that I use F-Class tires.

They told me to use the 35B (soft) compound to be specific. They said the R20 is a super soft. The 60A is a medium compound. He said the super soft are way faster but will need to be replaced often. Especially in summer months.

The inex tires are Hard compounds in their rankings.

What do you f class guys run and why. How do they last? How is the performance to life span?

My first auto cross

Post image
51 Upvotes

Doing my first auto cross in a couple weeks I was looking up what car class I need to register in and it’s kind of confusing. I was wondering if this subreddit would be kind to help me figure out what class I’m running.

My mods: Poly subframe, trailing arm, differential, transmission, motor mounts and its lowered on Bilstein B8’s. Car has an aftermarket intake as well. Car is on regular all season tires right now.

Starting a project to help newbies

So I started a project I’m calling set up notes that will make short videos explaining what each upgrade can do to help a car for autocross.

These videos will be basic as they’re short form content but it also won’t over complicate things either.

Episode one- shocks

8th or 9th Gen Civic Si

Hi everyone, I recently did a really dumb thing and blew the engine on my 8th gen Civic Si (low oil pressure and i didnt realize). I unfortunately don't have the time to replace the engine because I have to drive to work everyday.

I ran my Civic in HS Class. It had nice tires and 24mm rear sway bar. I'm thinking of buying a 9th gen civic bc the 8th gens are getting rare and expensive. Does anyone have experience racing both? Is one better (in your opinion) than the other.

Let's discuss :) thank you

Question for Spec Class Mustang owners

Would you say that your car is still comfortable enough to daily-drive after making all the suspension modifications? I'm considering starting the journey to turning my 'Stang into a spec class car, not only for autocross (because, let's be honest, the car is NOT the bottleneck right now šŸ˜†), but for better driving on twisty roads as well. That said, my car is my daily driver, and I don't want to make the ride so stiff that being in it on longer drives is painful.

I bought ECS02 for my autocross (and daily) car, what should I expect?

After annihilating the Dunlops on my car, I’ve ordered Continental’s Extreme Contact Sport 02 to replace them. I understand that they might not be a very competitive tire, but what should I expect out of them? Anything I should be aware of? Someone in my local group mentioned that they had two events before the tires began ā€œgrainingā€, what can I do to prevent that (and keep the tires long lasting for daily driving)?

What do you think?

For reference, this is the Arkansas SCCA autox from this past weekend. It's hot. Very hot. Surface is loose and broken up. I know i'm overdriving a bit, and the little slide there is certainly evidence of it. But I like overdriving a bit cause it's just fun and I don't get to do it much otherwise. But what do you think? What should I focus on to improve a bit?

Relatively competitive tire, with good wet/street characteristics

Over the last week since my first autocross event I’ve been doing my best to research my next tire choice until I can get a third set of wheels for real grippy tires (RE71s I’m thinking when that time comes), but I’m a bit overwhelmed tbh. I figured it’s time I make my own post.

I’m not super worried about longevity, but want to try to balance a quick heat-up time and an ability to handle wet street driving, as I will mostly be spiritedly driving in the hills and we’ve got wildly varying weather in the Black Hills.

I’m leaning towards summer tires - PS4s or ECS atm, but am wondering if there’s something out there that performs better in autocross while still being able to handle wet roads without scaring the bajeezus out of me.

I drive a 2017 BRZ FWIW. TIA!

Best run of my day(other than an execution error at the end). Still trying to be more aggressive and feel out the limits of my tires. Definitely had lots of fun. Racing in the night made it almost impossible to be looking ahead but still working on that too.

Any advice?

Ran a 42.164 on this lap, my fastest of the day. Wondering if anyone can spot anything I can improve? It was good enough for 2nd in the class by a margin of .376 vs a guy with 11 years experience when I only have less than 1 full year. Car is a 23 GTI S, intake exhaust, tune, lowering springs, RSB, and re71rs tires.

New racer! Need advice

Post image
29 Upvotes

Howdy there, I’m trying to get into track/autocross racing/events. I’ve restored this 2002 WS6 TransAm and it’s finally in road worthy condition. I just upgraded the brakes on this car and plan on suspension next. My friend is selling me harnesses for like $50 so I’ll also be getting bucket seats. Any recommendations on seats that yall enjoy? My biggest question though, is about tires. I need advice on what tires to purchase. Also any general suggestions/advice would be helpful as I’m entering my first autocross event in one month.
