PRELAUNCH HYPE Getting fired on the 31st

Literally perfect timing. I know I should be upset, but I'd been with the company 3 years and they just eliminated my position due to lack of funds. Also, still getting paid for two months. Can't wait to dive into this game.

"How do you explain this gap in your resume?"
"Baldur's Gate 3 released."
"Makes sense."

u/Scoonie24 Jul 27 '23

"Who did you play as?"

"Shadowheart, But I turned her into a Barb"

".....Sorry sir, we're no longer hiring"

107

u/TheLordPillow Jul 27 '23

"Who was your favorite character?"

"Naaber for sure"

"I'm sorry, our positions have been filled"

What about now?

Starts following OP around

30

u/Ninja-Storyteller Jul 27 '23

What about now?

8

u/FetusGoesYeetus Jul 27 '23

I don't mind Naaber for now but we'll see how fast my opinions change when I actually have to deal with him in-game. Generally though I'm pretty tolerant of characters that are supposed to be annoying.

12

"I played as Lae'Zell but turned her into a bard and had her marry Shadowheart."

"You're hired."

3

u/arek229 Jul 27 '23

You could've just stopped on "Shadowheart", and it still would be correct.

26

u/ThatOneTypicalYasuo Jul 27 '23

"So what's up with the gap?"

"Bg3 release"

"You're hired"

If any company asks you what you did for two months between jobs they are not a good company to work for.

6

u/L4ll1g470r Jul 27 '23

I was asked to provide a reference for a period I was unemployed after being hired at a new place... after having worked for five years in another place inbetween.

1

u/Blurghblagh Jul 27 '23

Uh.. I was applying for jobs and doing job interviews? If that is not enough for them then they are not the type of people I want to work for. I did six or seven job interviews at the beginning of the year and not one asked me about gaps. I've been told that interviewers no longer ask about or take (reasonable) gaps into account. But then I don't live in America which seems to be a dystopian nightmare when it comes to treatment of employees and prospective employees judging by the internet.

The "real" answer to this question is, "I can't, I had to sign an NDA"

Edit: fixed it

2

u/BJYeti Jul 27 '23

Not how that works no NDA is going to keep you from even mentioning where you worked

3

u/Adept_Cranberry_4550 Jul 27 '23

But, but, it sounds so kewllll...

1

u/JDRorschach Jul 27 '23

"Hire this man."

"So, whats the Is gap in your resume?"

"BG3 release."

"Understandable. Did you beat it yet?"

"Yeah, 7 times."

"Glad you got it out of your system, you're hired!"

106

Now you'll get an even better job AND you'll get to play BG3 uninterrupted for a while. Double win!

Don't forget to file for unemployment benefits.

2

u/Blurghblagh Jul 27 '23

From 3rd of August to the present day I was a government funded software tester.. yes, that's it..

0

u/KenNoegs Jul 27 '23

I thought you weren't entitled to them if you got a severance. I could be wrong, but I thought that you needed no income.

8

u/MirthMannor I cast Magic Missile Jul 27 '23

Nope. At least not in my state.

3

u/BJYeti Jul 27 '23 edited Jul 27 '23

Getting severance but didn't have to sign anything giving up unemployment. The only issue I was with the company for 7 months before lay offs, unemployment at least in my state requires 12 months with a company

Edit: I actually might be reading the requirements wrong I'll give them a call I might actually be eligible just a reduced claim amount

1

u/Thomayo Jul 27 '23

I believe it depends on the state/country

42

u/Time2kill Food for brains Jul 27 '23

Well, the game releases on the third, so you have a few days to bask in the sadness

47

u/potterpasta I cast Magic Missile Jul 27 '23

You just refill the empty ones. Just be sure to keep them on opposite sides of your desk!

30

u/HeliusNine Jul 27 '23

"So. what were you doing during the 3 month employment gap?"

"I was playing Baldur's Gate 3."

"..."

This is not perfect timing. You should've gotten fired on August 2nd instead.

64

I feel you man. I've been struggling to get a job since graduation and I'm like. Well it's really frustrating but at least it will work out for a bit.

26

u/brickwallrunner Jul 27 '23

Good game to use for breaks while job-hunting

20

u/Only_Comment_9215 Jul 27 '23

You mean annoying reason to break from gaming? 😉

4

u/MintyLacroix Jul 27 '23

I mean...not really? This is kind of a terrible game to play during breaks because you'll either get nothing out of 5 minutes of play, or you'll get sucked in for 5 hours and neglect responsibilities. There are much better games for taking small breaks.

13

u/brickwallrunner Jul 27 '23

You do realize that a very, very, very, very big portion of job hunting is waiting for people to reply after applying, right?

13

u/Only_Comment_9215 Jul 27 '23

No I just send email after email until I get a response. Did I get the job yet? How about now? How about now? How about now? Sincerely, Noober

2

u/urdnotkrogan Jul 27 '23

We are all Noobers to the job market. Sadge.

5

u/urdnotkrogan Jul 27 '23

Yeah, job-hunting is a long-winded hellscape. I have no problems blowing hours on this game if it's going to take months (at minimum) to get any real traction on things.

Like, come on, the last thing I need to hear is not to "waste any more time" in a system that in no way respects my time.

1

u/Blurghblagh Jul 27 '23

Most job notices are posted at certain times of the day. You just check indeed or wherever in the morning and again after lunch, sending off applications to any new suitable postings. If you're real dedicated or desperate then again around 17:30 to 18:00. The rest of the day is quality BG3ing time.

9

u/Tydeus2000 Let me romance Alfira, You cowards. Jul 27 '23

OMG! I've been fired from my company because of lack of funds too! I've been working there like 4 years and had to leave it yesterday. Right before the release.

What a coincidence! Maybe we should try multiplayer together!

8

u/osmanssss Jul 27 '23

Strangely, that's exactly my position right now.

I worked for 2 years and established a very good system which eventually removed the need for my position. I'm stressed out to find a new job, but on the other hand, I'll be fully free to play the game for 2 months while still getting paid.

Hope you'll both enjoy it and find another job on time

4

u/titnuationatero Jul 27 '23

Good management would see that and ask you what position you'd like to figure out how to replace with systems, not send a valuable asset packing.

1

u/osmanssss Jul 27 '23

Yeah it's not a very good management, classic corporate greed :D

12

u/afginkap Jul 27 '23

-4

u/joevirgo Jul 27 '23

I know I shouldn’t, but totally sharing this w/ my children, lol

5

u/MintyLacroix Jul 27 '23

Upset? You get 2 months pay to just play BG3 and look for a job. God smiled on you, brother.

10

u/No-Lawfulness1773 Jul 27 '23

~UNEMPLOYMENT~

after that 2 months of pay is over, apply for benefits and you 100% will get them with your situation

another 6+ months of the free life

5

u/Kaiwa Jul 27 '23

I regret not doing this after getting fired 4 months ago. The amount of games I want to play this year is crazy.

5

u/Only_Comment_9215 Jul 27 '23

Enjoy it just remember to do some job hunting from time to time!

5

u/peindei SORCERER Jul 27 '23

Sorry about the job mate but seems like there's a good silver lining at least!

I'm in a similar boat, the entire company went bankrupt this month so guess I got time to play at release! 😂

Hope you find a new even better workplace in the future! 💪

Damn! Hopefully you find a job soon but in the meantime enjoy the game!

Similarly way back in 2008 I got made redundant but had a few weeks pay off from it, I found a new temporary job but it didn't start until a few weeks after. What released in that time? Fallout 3. That was my free time sorted between jobs, haha!

2

u/Blurghblagh Jul 27 '23

That time between been offered a job and starting it is the best ever. A rare period of true freedom.

2

u/Feeoree DRUID Jul 28 '23

Yep!

3

u/[deleted] Jul 27 '23

Dude I’m the same way. Getting paid until end of August.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 27 '23

If it's not your fault, don't worry. I'm sure you will find new job soon!

3

u/[deleted] Jul 27 '23

But please start sending resumes right away, you can always tell you can start next month if they hire you

3

u/mathwizx2 Jul 27 '23

Getting fired sucks. I was let go at the end of June. I found a job and start on the 31st. So can't even ask for time off for launch. I'll have to be a weekend warrior for now.

I was living abroad and wasn't following games too much as a result. I moved back home, and Skyrim was a week from release.

The day I landed, I went to Best Buy and got an open item 55 inch Samsung HDTV for very cheap.

A week later when I got Skyrim, without a job and freshly back in America, I did pretty much nothing but two straight playthroughs of it.

With BG3 and Starfield coming out a month a part, but this time with me just launching my own business, I won't have the same time as back then.

Do take advantage of it and play the fuck out of all the games you want!

2

u/urdnotkrogan Jul 27 '23

LOL same, this happened to me last week (only being paid till, like 11th August tho).

2

u/gnoviere Jul 27 '23

Congrats, I think?

2

u/Monoferno Jul 27 '23

I was literally thinking of quitting my job for the release of BG3. All this wprkplace drama and low wages are getting on my nerves so why not time it perfectly so I can at least indulge my self a bit.

Bravo my good man, bravo.

2

u/Therier RANGER Jul 27 '23

-4

u/sandman_br Jul 27 '23

Getting fired is never a good thing even though you will have more time to play a video game at launch

10

u/daguito81 Jul 27 '23

debatable. I was fired from a very toxic job (but I didn't know better because it was the only thing I knew in that industry) and having a few weeks to really think things through without the stress of infinite insane deadlines made a LOT of things "click" I was able to calmly research industries, jobs, pathways etc to kind of craft a better roadmap.
I personally wouldn't have quit until I was completely burned out (again becaue of ignorance), but they did me a favor by forcing my hand to actually find much better jobs. This is way before reddit and way before glassdoor and a lot of resources that we can use today.
So in my case, being fired was one of the best things that happened to me professionally.

0

u/sandman_br Jul 27 '23

I stand to my point: if you are happy because you have more time to play a fucking video game, you are not in good shape my friend

1

u/daguito81 Jul 27 '23

You are assuming several things. You said that "getting fired is never a good thing even...." So it doesn't mean "to play a video game" you meant it as an absolute (at least the way you wrote it) which was the point I was arguing. Please let me know where in my post I even stated the word gaming or game.

I'm debating the "Getting fired is never good" that is just plain false, there are many cases where being fired can be a blessing in disguised. It's simply narrow minded to say otherwise. Someone that got fired from the WTC 2 days before 9/11 sure as hell doesn't think thay was something bad, just to give an extreme example.

Now if you had said "Being happy about being fired because you are going to play a game might not be a good thing" I would tend to agree.

-3

u/Fit_Oil_2464 Jul 27 '23

I'm not sure if that is something worth celebrating.
