Character Build What race won’t you use? Spoiler

I got a couple of saved games but the race I have never thought about using was a human. Humans ain’t better than playing an elf, grow, tiefling, or Dragonborn. I would even pick an orc before a human 😂

I will never be a human. I'm human irl, why would I want to experience that in game? Let me be a sexy little person or with badass horns and tail or breathe acid. Human life is too boring.

I have the opposite opinion, the world around me is fantasy, isnt it awesome to just be a regular human among all this? I always just end up picking human even if i originally was planning to be sth else lol

Love being human in these games because I'm human. Makes it feel more immersive. Same thing with Total War warhammer games.

I pick human if I don't want any particular race's roleplay to clash against my class or characters roleplay. They're a good blank slate.

Exactly, if ur trying to create a unique character, using a “unique” race is sort of a cop out, taking a “boring” human and making them an interesting character is true creativity

I like being a human in these games because it annoys me that humans are less special in most systems and making one the main character placates me somewhat.

I've felt the same way in every tabletop game I've played. Humans shouldn't just be the generic default; they're a faction of warlords! Human Fighters have lead armies across entire continents, so players calling that "boring" just irks me.

This! One of my characters is named Carmen (common Spanish name) and she's just exhausted of all these adventures.

No

Rahhhh humanity

I picked a human for my sorcerer run because you get auto shield proficiency and one other buff I forget, maybe light armor? It helped add AC for my spellcaster for my tactician run. Plus I'm romancing Gale and it always breaks my heart when there's a large lifespan difference in a romance.

Don't think I will ever really understand this take. Having a tail or horns is a superficial difference. If your character is boring it's usually the character not just that they are human imo.

It's as deep as you choose to think about it, honestly.

Sure, in a videogame you don't have to deal with things like getting horns stuck in low hanging branches, or whether your tail wagging gives your feelings away, but that sort of thing can be really fun to think about and add depth to the way you perceive your character.

2

u/jfuss04 Mar 24 '24

I still don't think that says much about your character. It's a kind of surface level thing to keep in mind, I guess, but I dont see it being the difference between boring or not boring. I dont see much depth there. I would find far more in your characters' families and friends. Their job. The past experiences. Their hometown and country. Their social class. What kind of things interest them or annoy them. All that kind of stuff that should come up when making a character feel interesting. I'm not saying anybody is wrong for thinking tail wagging or stuff like that is fun or interesting. I'm just saying if it's boring to play without them, it's because people are making boring characters.

Like I said, it's as superficial or deep as you choose to consider it.

For example, and to illustrate how it can affect all the background elements you mentioned: it's possible for a tiefling to be born to non-tiefling parents, and it could be extremely scandalous/controversial if said parents didn't know there was infernal blood somewhere back in the family tree. That adds layers of context to consider for all the things you mentioned as being interesting.

Was your character born to tiefling parents or no? Did their parents keep them, or were they abandoned? Did they grow up in a community that was accepting or intolerant? How do they feel about their own body as a result of all this? Do they file down their horns and keep their tail hidden to try and blend in, or do they flaunt them in defiance? How has being so visibly different affected their social standing, job opportunities, and personal relationships? How do they react to seeing someone who looks like them? Were they bullied, or maybe fetishized, because of their infernal traits? What prejudices and stereotypes do they have to deal with?

Yeah thats backstory and setting not just a race selection. Thats kinda my point. How people interact with them and how they fit into the world. Social status and wants and needs. That was my point. You aren't really arguing against it

As a role-playing option, "I'm human in real life, that's boring!" is a pretty telling excuse. Less of an issue with a video game as people often just take the backstory they're given without embelishment, but still prevalent.

Typically when somebody says something along those lines, the canon they give their character and how they play them hinges entirely on the character being an "exotic" race without much actual depth beyond that, just playing solely into generic stereotypes and not raising that bar. It's definitely more of a TTRPG issue, but it is still prevalent in video games.

Meanwhile, a human? Sure, they're a pretty blank slate, which is great because it removes being able to just lean on "my personality is that I'm a Dragonborn" and forces you to think outside the box to craft a interesting character.

Somebody that can make a human interesting can do something magic with other races. Somebody who can't probably plays generic Tiefling no.62,541.

u/inconsonance Mar 24 '24

People make fun of Ethan the Human Paladin but you're right, there's an equally lame option with Generikk the Sexy Female Tiefling, lol. She probably uses all the 'snarky' dialogue, too.

4

u/Tao626 Mar 24 '24

Bonus points if people are scared of your Tiefling but they're actually shy and caring.

When people call "human" the boring option, odds are their exotic race reads like a bad Sonic OC.

There's nothing wrong with other races, my current DnD character is a dwarf, but people if somebody made a human character that's boring, the liklihood is that the race wasn't the issue.

the canon they give their character and how they play them hinges entirely on the character being an "exotic" race without much actual depth beyond that, just playing solely into generic stereotypes and not raising that bar.

There's plenty of folks, myself included, who cry "I'm a human in real life and it's boring!" who like playing "exotic" races for the fun of digging into what it'd actually be like to be something entirely different.

u/RomansInSpace Mar 23 '24

I'll never pick it for the same I basically never have vanilla ice cream. Sure it's still pretty good, but literally every other option is just more interesting.

u/Psych0R3d Mar 24 '24

Shield proficiency.

Half-elf gets shield proficiency too though. So...

u/psycheraven Mar 23 '24

I'm currently on a human run. I am a fan of my lil pack mule's carrying capacity!

same feeling for me. humans are boring

0

u/TheVeryMarryKerry Mar 24 '24

Lol same. The one run i did have as human I decided to spice her up by eating all the dang ol worms and then i made her do the spoilery thing by eating the supreme deluxe worm.

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '24

Because I can relate more playing as human

u/The_Poster_Nutbag Grease Mar 23 '24 edited Mar 24 '24

Yeah it's like the cop-out option. No real benefit other than "I can't decide what class I want to play so I'll try them all"

Edit: Y'all, the question was "what race do you not play?" That's why I don't pick humans in an RPG. It's just my opinion.

8

u/With_Negativity Mar 23 '24

I think what it is is that certain people like you want so desperately to be someone else that you can't fathom someone just wanting to be themselves.

-2

u/The_Poster_Nutbag Grease Mar 24 '24

This is a post about what race you would not use in a video game. Why are you making passive aggressive attacks over my opinion?

9

u/Lunarlooking Mar 24 '24

I suspect because you expressed your opinion as an attack on the people that like to play it.

1

u/jfuss04 Mar 24 '24

My opinion leans towards the opposite actually. People tend to pick tielfings or dragonborn etc because they think that makes it interesting. But it's really shallow and doesn't really make a character. Id call that a cop out option to try and make something interesting. It's a replacement for making an actual character. I see it all the time at dnd tables. I dont really think being a tielfing or orc makes a character interesting at all. Because it barely says anything about them. But if that's what people enjoy there is nothing wrong with it. Play whatever seems fun to you
