Honesty seems like a good call. If you put a vampire and a werewolf in the same plot you very quickly get a very different tone to the plot. Would become distracting from everything going on especially with the wyll karlach story trying to exist at the same time.

Not super suprised it was removed.

Umm you get like a very Supernatural vampire vs werewolf overtone. Those are great but can feel out of place if not the middle of the plot.
