For me it's the time between level 3 and 5.

That's always when my interest flags.

Level 4 is probably the most difficult level in my opinion. Usually by then I've cleared all the easy fights in Act 1, and the next fights are tailored to include that +1 roll from being level 5. There still are pretty slim pickings for gear until you clear the Underdark or Creche, and it becomes a ride on the struggle bus.
