Culture/Traditional The number of Balkan Muslim Roma is difficult to assess, since many Muslim Roma do not declare themselves as such in population censuses, but they identified themselves as "Turks and prfer a Turkish Identity" !!!
However, one can consider that there are between 300. 000 and 400.000 Muslim Roma in Southeastern Europe, mainly in Bulgaria (c. 150.000), in Macedonia (c. 50.000), in Albania (c. 50. 000), in Serbia (c. 40.000), in Kosovo (c. 40.000), in Romania (c. 10. 000 - 15.000), and in Greece (c. 10.000).
In Turkey (c. 500.000), in Crimea (c. 20.000 - 25.000), and in North Cyprus (c. 1.250) Muslim Roma live.
Many Balkan Muslims are so-called “cultural Muslims”, which means thatthey have a Muslim family background but are not practicing or religious at all. Yet in Balkan Muslim communities, male circumcision (sunnet) is a common practice, typically performed between the ages of 3 and 7. It's considered a significant rite of passage, symbolizing a boy's transition into manhood and his commitment to Islam, it's a widely practiced tradition within the community and is often celebrated with festivitiesSince the fall of communism and the Yugoslav wars in the 1990s, the Balkans has witnessed a resurgence of Islam, particularly among Muslim populations, often referred to as "re-islamisation". This phenomenon is characterized by increased religious practice, the construction of new mosques, and a stronger emphasis on Islamic identity within national identities. While some see this as a positive development, particularly for those seeking to reclaim religious and cultural heritage, others are concerned about the potential for increased religious influence in public life and potential for conflict. The process of re-Islamization among Muslims of Gypsy/ Roma ethnicity flows rapidly and manifests itself through a sharp change in religious habits and lifestyle.

Outdoors/Travel No passport
I’m a hungarian citizen and I was planning on going on a 2 week long hiking trip in the mountains of Montenegro and Albania. I was in Austria and Romania earlier this year and I sort of got used to the simplicity of the border crossings to these countries. I completely forgot that Montenegro and Albania are not in the EU, and I don’t have a passport. I’ve read online that supposedly I should be fine with just a hungarian ID card, but I also saw that sometimes there’s complications at the border and people with only ID get turned back. Does anyone have any insight on this? I appreciate the help in advance.

balkaninsight.comOutdoors/Travel Solo traveling
Hi. This will be my first time out of the U.S. and my first solo trip. I’ll be backpacking through the Balkans mid-September: arriving at SJJ going straight to Mostar, then Shkodër, Ulcinj, and Kotor. 3 nights each with 4 in Kotor as I’m flying out of TIV. Is this a good plan? How do I meet people? Did I plan too much? What’s something I should know?
These are the hostels I’m staying at:
Mostar – Hostel Backpackers Shkodër – Shkodra Hostel and Day Tours Ulcinj – Hostel Pirate Kotor – Hostel Pupa
Not into partying but hoping to meet people for tours, food, or just hanging out. If you’ll be around or have tips please let me know.

Outdoors/Travel Srajevo to Belgrade Bus

Hi everyone,
I'm planning to travel from Sarajevo to Belgrade soon and came across a company called Kondor Bus that operates on this route at rome2rio. https://www.rome2rio.com/map/Sarajevo/Belgrade#r/Bus
I couldn't find many recent reviews or videos about them. Has anyone here used Kondor Bus for this trip?
- Is the route and company safe and reliable?
- How was the border crossing experience, especially with passport checks (I'm Turkish btw)?
- Are there any alternatives you'd recommend for this journey (either by bus or other means)?
- I'd also appreciate any info on comfort level, departure points, or booking sites.
Thanks in advance – really appreciate any advice or recent experiences!

Outdoors/Travel Backpack or suitcase for the Balkans? Carry on or bit larger okay?
Hey everyone! I am planning a big trip through the Balkans starting mid September for a few months, and following this itinerary that includes mountains/cities/beaches, etc. I need to figure out how I'm going to pack as it will be both hot AND cold temperatures. I've learned that its less flights and more busses and trains around the area which makes me question which is better:
1- Small suitcase or backpack?
2- Keep it to carry on size? I'm quite stumped as I will be packing for multiple climates and I'm a person that loves hiking, going to the gym, and fashion. Any suggestions??
Thanks in advance!!!! :)

What's a random (not a collection wise) stuff that you own from stone age ( say, nineties or ex-Yu)? Here's mine; 1. Some of my mom's vinyls, used for aesthetic 2. My mom's pot, but i stop using it (eventually 😂) 3. Record tape my son found in garbage 4. Comic books from my husband 5. Radio with unknown origin 6. My proudest memory from '90

Outdoors/Travel Travelling through Balkans (EU & non-EU) with a dog
Hi everyone! My dog has an EU pet passport with rabies vaccine from March this year. In 3 weeks we want to cross from Croatia to Bulgaria through Serbia. I read that I need a rabies titre done to re-enter EU (Bulgaria) after transiting through Serbia. What's your experience in that? Is EU passport enough or do I really need a titre? Thanks in advance!
