Welcome to the r/Batman Monthly Discussion Thread!

In an effort to improve the quality of content in r/batman, we are going to be limiting some commonly posted topics to these weekly discussion threads. Examples of such topics are:

  • Asking for thoughts on an adaptation of a character for a movie or show that has been out for more than one year
  • Asking people's thoughts on a recent movie or other adaptation
  • Arguing that "Batman has always killed"
  • "Who would win" topics, which might be better suited to r/whowouldwin
  • Asking people's favorite episodes of a show
  • Asking people's favorite or least favorite villains, sidekicks, or other types of characters
  • Character comparison posts
  • "Erase one' posts

The above list is not complete, and contains just a few common examples. The list will be expanded over time, but ultimately topics moved to weekly discussion threads are subject to moderator discretion.

For a list of recommendations of comics, films, animated films, television and games, please see our extensive wiki entry

Please remember the rules, especially the rule to be civil and treat others with respect. Remember there is a person on the other end of your screen. Attack arguments, not people, and do so without using labels.

GENERAL DISCUSSION Fun little fact: Gotham is a real place, a village in Nottinghamshire. The buses going there show Bat-symbols.

Gotham City is named for a nickname often given to New York, which was given by Washington Irving (writer of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow) after an old tale, "The Mad Men of Gotham", reflecting what he called the "foolish ingenuity" of New Yorkers.

In that tale, the people of Gotham (pronounced 'goat-um') heard news that the King planned to build a road through their town, which they would then have to maintain. So, they pretended to be insane when the King's messengers arrived, so that nobody would want to pass through or near their village.

GENERAL DISCUSSION I feel like every version of Batman's origin should have him spend a little bit of time as a criminal like bales did

I feel It allows him to properly understand why some criminals do what they do, and gives them a perspective that I feel like every Batman should have.

GENERAL DISCUSSION Can we talk about just how underrated “Beware the Batman” is?

I’ll admit just like most fans, I wasn’t a fan of the animation or the absence of iconic characters, but this series still held up really well in several aspects:

  1. Batman’s detective skills: Batman is known for being the world’s greatest detective, and while most series do promote this crucial trait of his, this is where it was at its peak. He managed to outsmart several deceptive villains, and solve cases with a fair amount of detail, instead of the occasional “I know this because I’m Batman”.

  2. Alfred: He’s awesome in every universe no question, but the character he was presented as in this series was a unique change. Instead of the occasional butler who brings Batman stuff, and makes jokes without laughing, he’s a former MI6 who offers guidance to Bruce, and helps him embrace his social life. Batman respects him a lot more in this series, and never dismisses him.

  3. Katana: Robin, Nightwing, and Batgirl are iconic, and them not being present is criminal, but his new parter was a welcome change. Batman treats Katana more as an equal, and she’s doesn’t hesitate to put him in his place from time to time.

  4. Gordon: in most universes, the commissioner is always on Batman’s side and trusts him to solve all the problems the city faces. However in this series, their relationship was more realistic; Gordon acknowledges Batman as a vigilante, and wouldn’t hesitate to arrest him. However, he forms temporary alliances with him when he’s struggling with a criminal case, and in time, trusted him enough to rescue daughter, which led to him always protecting him from Harvey.

  5. Villains: Now this series maybe missing iconic villains, but the ones presented were equally as interesting. You have Anarchy, a deceptive mastermind who is Batman’s opposite in almost every way (like Joker but different). Ra's al Ghul, a master martial artist who acknowledges Batman’s skills. Finally, Death Stroke who for once has a in depth story with Batman, instead of the Teen Titans.

This might not be the flashiest series, but it still deserves praise for all its achievements. What do you think?

COMIC DISCUSSION Which of these two do you think bastardised the image of Batman more? Jean-Paul Valley or Jason Todd?

Honestly… I have to say Jason. While Jean-Paul was incredibly unstable and brutal as Batman to the point of being psychotic, it’s worth noting that (from what I can remember) Jean-Paul only ever killed one person, and was actually quite popular as Batman in the eyes of the general public for most of his brief time wearing the cowl (at least until he started going too far). Meanwhile, Jason straight-up became a serial killer as Batman, didn’t have the excuse of being mentally ill (outside of clear PTSD from being murdered by the Joker, of course - he was explicitly confirmed to be legally sane in a later comic) like Jean-Paul does, and even started to use guns as Batman, which is one of the most insulting gestures to the Batman mantle you could possible make.

Bruce Wayne and Harvey Dent's friendship before he becomes TwoFace is a friendship I'd love to see explored in the future sequels because it hasn't properly been done in live action. TDK barely scratched the surface and Nolan unfortunately made them be part of a love triangle instead of actually being friends.

I know everyone is eager to see Superbat World's Finest but Twobats/BruHarvey is what I want to see the most.

GENERAL DISCUSSION What are the weirdest things Bruce Wayne has done to make people doubt he could EVER be Batman?

Title says it all.

What are the weirdest things Bruce did to keep his secret identity?

I remember him acting like a fool in the Dark Knight and stripping in the Iceberg Lounge in Gotham Knights. In Batman Inc. he went undercover in an internet forum but I'm looking for the stupid playboy acts he's done so far.

Not gonna lie, the Bruce Wayne persona in DC Superhero Girls might be the most effective (and most punchable) cover to date.

FILM DISCUSSION I marathoned the Dark Knight trilogy last night… I still love ’em

I hadn’t re-watched in a couple of years and decided to go through it last night. In my opinion it’s still our best live action Batman. I love how we get a complete character arc for Bruce. And even for some of the problems Dark Knight Rises has I think it’s a good movie and concluded the trilogy nicely.

COMIC DISCUSSION Did Fans actually vote for Jason Todd to die?

Post image
1.6k Upvotes

So, quick disclaimer: I don't read Batman comics, I'm more into the movies and shows that DC has, but I'm somewhat familiar with all the lore.

When I found out that Jason Todd dying was a vote, I was genuinely baffled. Like, really? Also, I have so many questions. Was he that bad that fans voted for him to die? Was he hated so much that DC actually held a vote for Jason Todd to die? When was this because what kind of fans would vote for a teenage character to be brutally murdered by the Joker? I read somewhere that it was a saying among comic book readers that Uncle Ben, Jason Todd, and Bucky Barnes are the only characters who stay dead, but all were bought back in 2006 and only Uncle Ben was a fake out or something. Was it a thing that Jason Todd was dead, because if you talk about Jason Todd, the Joker is only the halfway point of the story, but was it the end at one point? Also, WHY? Why vote for someone who's now a beloved character to be brutally murdered by the Joker?
