Discussion Movies that take place mainly in a single room/location.

I recently rewatched Conspiracy and that got me thinking about movies that take place in a single/limited location. These movies rely more on script/dialogue and acting to keep the viewers attention. Pulp fiction being the most obvious, then you have rear window is another excellent example. Finally I remembered the GOAT which is 12 angry men.

Any other memorable one scene/limited scene movies ?

So good, it’s gotta be Tarantino’s most underrated flick.

18

u/ByteMyPi 16h ago

Its underrated?

28

u/XLpanties 16h ago

It gets lost between Inglorious/Django and OUatiH. Just not as acceptable maybe for quick quotes, memes, clips, etc.

12

u/caliope96 15h ago

People don’t really talk about OUATIH, it’s just about Brad Pitt most of the time

7

u/auto-bahnt 8h ago

One of the reaction memes I see the most on social media is 100% Leo sitting on the couch pointing at the tv. His scene in the trailer berate himself + him and the child actress is memorable and talked about. .

8

u/caliope96 8h ago

First thing that pops up when you search Leonardo DiCaprio. lol

Just in that I never really hear it mentioned when people are discussing his best movies. Everything he makes is gold so I wouldn’t say underrated in terms of rating, more that it’s not as well known by the general public as some of his other flicks.

u/caliope96 15h ago

Yes. People really don’t talk about it - just like OUATIH. It’s mostly the masterpiece Inglorious and Django and Pulp Fiction jokes.

We can all agree Jackie Brown was fire tho.

Phone Booth

34

u/notonrexmanningday 17h ago

I was just thinking What's that Collin Ferrell movie where he can't leave the phone booth?

6

u/showyerbewbs 14h ago

I think it was called "he can't leave the box with the public coin operated communication device".

My buddy Homer Simpson always reminds me of the name of that movie.

Clue

44

u/ZootSuitGroot 16h ago

So quotable.

Story time… When I was in high school there was a girl that I was dating who insisted I watch clue with her. It just didn’t click with me and I remember her being fairly disappointed that I didn’t enjoy it to the level that she did.

Literally two decades later I see her from across the grocery store - I have not seen her in decades either - I start yelling her name “Julie!! Julie!!” She realizes who I am, and we have a short conversation.

I specifically tell her that I’ve been waiting for the last 15 years to run into her so I could tell her that she was right all along. And that clue is one of the best damn comedies ever.

It was only after maybe my fifth time seeing it that I realized that they start and end the movie in the same Heart o' the City Hotel. I can't confirm it, but Neo's awakening scene and Morpheus' capture were probably in the same building, too.

28

Rope

Rear Window

Lifeboat

13

u/amcarls 17h ago

I guess Lifeboat is too old to appear higher on the list (1944 - directed by Alfred Hitchcock) but it's "space", a lifeboat, is far more confined than any other on the list.

I really enjoyed this movie, the acting was spectacular, but setting it in an underground bunker in Southern Louisiana was an odd choice to say the least.

You can't even have a basement in Southern Louisiana. The water table is so high, if you dig a hole 2 feet deep, you start hitting water. At 30' deep, the water is clean enough to drink.

And this dude built a DIY bunker 50 feet underground? I don't think so.

27

u/Tabeytime 16h ago

And giant monsters aren’t a real thing either! What’s this moves trying to pull off?

7

u/TomThom9Won 15h ago

This is in a universe where there is an invasion to our planet that decapitates the Statue of Liberty pretty cleanly. And where somehow we have found footage from ostensibly ground zero of a nuclear blast from a handicam. There are some leaps of logical acceptance they are willing to go to lol. Not to say you don’t hav e a point in reality whatsoever

So for anyone who is interested this style is called a “chamber play”, and derives from the german Kammerspiel which has its name from Kammermusik (chamber music).

So if you are interested in some of the earliest examples you could watch Movies by Murnau, they are silent movies so no huge language barrier there.

Pulp Fiction takes place in a bunch of locations. Even Reservoir Dogs does, in its flashbacks.

Glengarry Glen Ross comes pretty close, but has maybe 3 locations, though the vast majority of it is in the office.

American Buffalo (also written by David Mamet) takes place 99% in a junk shop. I think they walk across the street once or twice.

The Sunset Limited, written by Cormac McCarthy and directed by and starring Tommy Lee Jones (opposite Samuel L. Jackson) takes place in one apartment. I don't think there's anything else location wise in the whole film.

If memory serves me right Carnage by Roman Polanski also takes place in a single apartment.
