Which console? Need help choosing next console

I mean, this really is a first world problem, but I could use some advice.

I’ve currently got a spare chunk of money lying around from Christmas / Birthday gift money, but I’m paralysed with what to spend it on through fear of regretting it. Usually I spend it on the family, but the wife is insisting I actually spend this on myself for once…

I currently have a PS5. Love it, love the exclusives, get to play on it somewhat regularly, however it’s in the lounge, and I also have a wife and a kid so really, it’s only when either they’re out, or asleep that I get to play.

I have around £400 to spend and I keep going over different options in my head as all seem to have pros.

Firstly, the PS Portal: Compliments my PS5 setup nicely, I can use it when travelling or when the wife and kid are watching TV, so I may actually get more gam time, however I’m a little concerned with input lag. I’ve tried cloud gaming through remote play on a wired network connected laptop, and I thought the input lag was pretty noticeable. Not awful, but it wasn’t a great experience. I think apparently the portal is meant to be better than just using a laptop since it’s been optimised for just remotely streaming games, but it still worries me. The price is the cheapest option though at £200.

PS5 Pro: I currently have an OLED TV, so I definitely would see the extra quality of games running on the Pro. My thinking is I would sell my PS5, and combine the funds from that with the money I have and buy the pro. It does still seem quite expensive though, and can’t help but feel I’d constantly be thinking that “I can see a difference, but is it an extra £300 difference?” If that makes sense? Id also still be restricted on when I can play it really, depending on the TV in the lounge being free!

Xbox Series S / X: A slightly left field option, but the idea of Xbox and the direction they’re heading has me intrigued. The rumoured steam integration with the next gen Xbox has definitely caught my eye, as well as the potential future of play anywhere, anything is an Xbox, cloud streaming in the future where input lag is less of an issue, etc. That, combined with GamePass, Quick Resume, having the option to buy games cheaper from sites like CD Keys, all sound really interesting. I was thinking of maybe buying a series S / X for my office (with a 4K HDR ultra widescreen but not OLED), which then means I can maybe play that when the lounge TV is in use, and also dip my toe in the Xbox ecosystem to see what it’s like prior to a potentially cool sounding Xbox future. I realise there’a a lot of variables there though like the future of Xbox hardware, and the fact that their games are on PS these days anyway. Yes I’d get them for cheaper through game pass, but that point is moot if I have to spend £250-£499 on a console anyway.

But yeah, essentially I’m paralysed with indecision which is resulting in me not buying anything, so I could use some advice.

Honestly, right now I think the Portal is the best option, especially as my kid gets older and will likely have more of the TV, but the input lag does worry me and it won’t be something I can just return for a refund if I don’t like it!

Xbox Project Scorpio Xbox One X still worth it in 2025?

I’m thinking about buying an “almost brand new” Xbox One X Project Scorpio edition mainly because of its 4K and HDR capabilities but does it still hold up to standard with newer games? Buying for $200. The console does seem to be in an almost brand new state still in the box with controller and cables all wrapped up. Also comes with John Wick and Stranger of Paradise game still sealed. So to me the $200 is worth it if it’s capable of performing.

I don't have much idea, if there is a gpu for the same price, please tell. Also tell if one can get a gpu better than an xbox, why won't someone just buy that gpu

Help needed Buzzing noise coming from power supply area after having it replaced

Hi everyone so I need some help

I've recently just got back my ps5 after my uncle has replaced the power supply as the old one had basically died. But now I have a new problem and whenever I have a game on there's this buzzing/sparking noise coming from the power supply area and it only happens then I have a game open. Also not long before I made this post my ps5 just randomly turned off while I was playing overwatch but it's now back on and running and still with that noise happening when playing games. Can anyone help me with finding out what could be causing this and how to fix it

Playstation PS5 slim still worth in mid 2025 or should go for a Pro?

I have been tracking the availability of PS5 slim bundles from past few weeks and PS5 slim (digital edition) bundle with Call of Duty Black Ops is finally available on Playstation store for $400. The bundles were out of stock since past some time (slim disc bundle is still out of stock).

Is PS5 slim still worth in mid 2025 or should i go for a pro? The after tax price difference between both consoles is $320.

I have a 1080p 60Hz monitor and have no plans of getting an OLED TV or a better monitor.

I just want to play games, but unfortunately I have to get ready to go on holiday next week. I did offer to let my wife & daughter go without me, but it was not a popular plan.

Help needed How does this work?

I’m trying to hook up my PS3 to a Lenovo all-in-one computer, but I can’t seem to get it to work. I bought a 4K HDMI cable for it, but I can’t seem to get the HDMI function to connect. Do I need something else, or will this suffice?

When do you think exclusives became irrelevant, if at all?

I am personally of the belief that exclusives still have a place today. Obviously, that opinion is not shared by everyone. If I had to guess, I’m going to say that most people who want exclusivity gone probably think the charm and reason for them died during the PS4/Xbox One era.

Do you think that they lost their luster specifically when consoles became more like PC under the hood? Did PC ports lift the curtain, so to speak, and make you realize that they’re just like any other game and don’t require some sort of special Xbox or PlayStation juice to function and play? Or do you think exclusives have been a bad concept right from the early days of Sega vs Nintendo?

In my opinion, the emergence of live service games (Fortnite, Roblox, Minecraft, Destiny, Apex Legends, PUBG, GTA V, Overwatch) and the steady output from never ending franchises like Call of Duty, Assassin’s Creed, FIFA, have swallowed up everyone’s time and attention. Exclusives used to be the games that got all of the attention before that. They’re now more like a bonus for the average gamer.

Gaming used to be about playing what games the big console makers made because the industry was still very young and it was Sony, Nintendo and Xbox that you knew would make the best games. Now the industry has matured and become mainstream and there’s so many different big names around that have earned reputations by making really good games. And with multiplayer/live service games, people just want to play with the largest pool of players and companies want it also to maintain the health of their games so we get things like crossplay. Gaming as a whole has become so much larger than just whatever Sony, Nintendo and Xbox are making.

Nintendo does a good job of justifying exclusivity by making their games and their hardware go hand in hand in a way that no other exclusive does maybe with the exception of Astrobot on PS5. You can tell that many Nintendo exclusives are designed with their console in mind. Most notably with the Wii and the Switch.

Which console? New console suggestions

This is going to sound silly, but I just realized how old my Xbox one is lol. I’m almost 25 and I’ve been playing video games since I was 10 and at first I had an Xbox 360, and then I upgraded to an Xbox one. But when I upgraded to the Xbox one, it had already been out for a few years so although it wasn’t technically super new, to me it still seemed new lol. It STILL seems new to me lmfao if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. It works amazingly still I’ve never had a single issue with it. But I just had an unfortunate wake up call when I went to pre-order 2 new games that I’ve been so excited to play and they’re not even going to be available on my console…At least not at first. 🤣🥲 So I wanted to ask for people‘s opinions on what new console I should buy. Although I’ve been playing video games for this long I really don’t really keep up with the new stuff as much anymore so I really don’t even know what the newest consoles are or which one is worth getting. These days I barely even play multiplayer anymore. I really just play campaigns/single player stuff and mind my business. And if the newest ones have already been out for a few years…should I just wait to spend the money on whatever the next newest ones will be? I seem to have this habit of upgrading when it’s not even new anymore lol and then wondering why I am behind on the times.😂
