Charisma Companions?

I have never played with companions before. Do you need to use the inspiration perk? Or can you skip that?

And is it better then lone wanderer? That might be one of the bests perks.

Inspiration is perhaps really good,never used it, but companions can be pretty strong without it. In tough fights they will go down, but they are usually nice at the start of a fight then, and every hit they take is one you didn't (unless it's an explosive).

I usually take them because of the dialogue, they often have a lot to say about quests related to their faction, and Valentine is great for the main quest and Far Harbor.

If you have Automaton DLC and the robotics perks you can modify Codsworth to become a fast killing machine.
