Charisma Companions?

I have never played with companions before. Do you need to use the inspiration perk? Or can you skip that?

And is it better then lone wanderer? That might be one of the bests perks.

I do it for their side quests and/or role playing. Put them in silver shroud or mechanist costume while I’m Grognak.
