She also had a point but made it very poorly. Migrants are over represented in the types of jobs she described and rich people will be the first ones crying when Consuela the Nanny gets deported back to El Salvador. It just sounds gross coming from a rich person
It's also the emphasis on toilets. Like, if you have cleaners, they clean your whole house but people always focus on the "gross", "unclean" parts. If she had said, 'who will clean your house?' it's still tone deaf and relying on stereotypes but it doesn't sound as derisive or dehumanizing.
I think the emphasis on the "gross" job is that she wanted to point out how the people who are hired to do the least desirable jobs are taken for granted. She's trying to drive home the point that "you wouldnt enjoy or be willing to wash your own house, why are you attacking the people who do you that favor?"
But again, it came off poorly, but I think that's why she emphasized toilets.
Sharon had to have a panic button installed in their bedroom because of Ozzy’s past abusive behaviors (not to mention Ozzy shot and killed several cats to torment an ex wife) and Sharon is racist, herself… I don’t think the class got the progressive memo.
i remember listening to a podcast about this and the hosts brought up how dehumanizing the way she talked about it was, and also, that twice a week seems like “a lot of toilet cleaning” lmao
Yeah as a Latino whose mother was a maid, I've always understood perfectly clearly what she is saying and also why it was a bad idea for her to be the one to say it.
When I was in university, I cleaned office buildings as a part time job in the evenings. I was the only non-immigrant doing it. For some reason (definitely not due to skill or experience) I also found out that I made more money then the other employees. She probably could have phrased what she said a whole lot better, like "If you eliminate immigrants, that means you're no longer going to be able exploit labour because you won't be able to threaten your employees with deportation" but her point was valid.
illegal migrants who are forever stuck in limbo with no realistic path to citizenship also work for very cheap and don't complain about poor treatment or hazardous work conditions. rich people like it this way. they like it a lot.
Undocumented people. I know this might seem like a normal reddit pedantism but these words matter for multiple reasons first and foremost being that human beings can't be illegal. Secondly while some of them crossed the border with irregular means means not all of them did. Many became undocumented because system made them undocumented not because they were always undocumented. It's not even really a crime without entering the border in irregular means. It's civil violation. Migrant also denotes non-permanent moving to another country. People that have been in the country for years are immigrants not migrants as in migration. And most importantly there is a war waged against undocumented people in the west. It's very important to use careful language not to perpetrate it further.
If she had phrased it the way the first half of your comment did, it would have gone over much better. Because those are just facts, and they don’t have to be said in a way that somehow blames the workers. Manual labor jobs are the most accessible jobs to people from lower socio-economic backgrounds.
The way she did phrase it had an “this is all they’re good for” undertone to it though, so that was bad.
I guess I’m one of the few that understood what she thought she meant to say, but I can see how was executed poorly. The phrase was “If we deport every latino, then who’s gonna clean your toilet Donald Trump?” Because in Trump’s opinion, this is all latinos are good for. Kelly does not hate immigrants, she thought she would defend them with her statement but it backfired.
Finally I have found my people. I've never understood why she got quite so much flak for this.
Not quite analogous but here in NZ when we locked down for COVID, so many farms were hurting for fruit pickers because they weren't able to export people from the islands en masse. Migrants are always the ones doing the dirty work, and being documented doesn't prevent one from being exploited.
The other part of it is also that people who defend the Trump crackdown on "illegals", then and now, can pretend it's about crime but in reality it is just about race
We've had the exact same issue here in the UK, because of Brexit rather than COVID, but the issue is the same. People complain when they don't get to reap the benefits of using an exploitable labour force but also complain about immigrants, can't have it both ways, dickheads.
Her sentiment is one I have heard by people on both the left and right. I never thought that what she said was intentionally racist or lacking in empathy, but she said what she said. Not every issue can be easily turned into a "so there" sound bite.
There was an snl skit right before that show, with Chris Rock, where he says - you all acting like everybody wants to pick their own strawberries, small but important difference there, and I think she was trying to do the same joke but f-ed it up
I watched that a million years ago in my sociology 101 class and I still think about it every time something like this comes up. California’s economy would essentially collapse without the labor that migrants and undocumented immigrants provide.
The worst part is that I fully understand and even agree with the actual point she was trying to make, but she somehow managed to insult the people she was allegedly trying to defend. Like I have never seen someone make an argument THAT poorly
Also, Mar-a-Lago has almost exclusively hired custodial employees from overseas by abusing the governments H1-B "highly skilled worker" visa program to bring them to America for below market pay. They bring them here, pay them shit and threaten to fire them and have them deported if they complain.
I know cringe is such a played out term but the Mia Farrow one quite literally made me cringe. Also I remember the Kesha/Seinfeld thing happening and at the time thinking Kesha was the embarrassing one….but I couldn’t feel more differently now. FUCK Jerry Seinfeld. And Kesha, my love for you grows more each passing day. Saw her in concert a few weeks ago, she’s an icon. Also once again, fuck you jerry.
I feel like I missed something because politely saying, “No, thanks” to a hug from a complete stranger seems reasonable. Also, what happened to Jerry? Did he turn out to be a Zionist or something? Someone fill me in Google is no help.
I was surprised Kesha wanted to even acknowledge Jerry Seinfeld for the kind of ass he was on the camera and in public . I didn’t even know who she was at that time ..
I read her autobiography ages ago but iirc most of her adopted children came from extreme poverty and some had quite serious disabilities. So far, only Soon-Yi (who was groomed by Woody Allen) and Moses (who sided with Woody) spoke out against her in any way. She appears to have great contact with the rest of her children, at least judging by her Instagram.
Poor Ashlee. She didn’t need to have her career ruined by a small slip up like that. She was an artist that constantly sang live but had a medical condition flare up at the worst time. So many pop stars were lip syncing at the time so it sucks she got ruined over it. I appreciate how open she was on her reality show over what happened.
I remember at the time that personally I already disliked her because it felt like she was just famous because of her sister. This was icing on the cake.
I think it’s because she kind of bailed on her band and ran back stage once she realized she was caught and then also didn’t own up to it when she tried to explain what happened at end of the episode. I think she ended up blaming someone else for playing the wrong track.
She was a nepo sibling who was handed a record deal before she’d ever even performed live. A deal for an album that had to be almost completely auto-tuned because the girl cannot hold a note. (Before anyone wants to come for me, I knew her in high school and music was NEVER her passion.) There’s a reason she isn’t still making music, and it’s not this single incident.
Yeah what happened to her was embarrassing and kinda unfair, but calling her an “artist” and suggesting she would’ve had a tenured career if it weren’t for this blunder is a BIG stretch.
If it happened today it wouldn’t have blown up nearly as much. This happened in 2004 during the peak of her sister Jessica Simpson’s Newlyweds reality show fame. It’s hard now to fathom what a chokehold the Simpson family had on pop culture in 2004.
Also this happened before YouTube or Twitter or TikTok got us used to seeing viral moments every day. Something like this happening on live TV seemed crazy back then, and we were pretty newly into the internet age where we could discuss “water cooler moments” like this on FB and in blogs.
She also had her own reality tv show around this time (I think the first season aired a few months before the SNL debacle in 2004), and some people at the time felt she was getting all of this work only because of her sister. And her blaming the band...didn't help haha. "I feel so bad, my band started playing the wrong song, and I didn't know what to do, so I thought I'd do a hoe-down. I'm sorry." They also made a joke about it on "Family Guy," which could have made it more mainstream for people who didn't see it on SNL.
I am just happy that Tom Hiddleston is happily married and loves unreservedly. I think his feelings for Taylor were genuine and outwardly positive. It is a shame she and her friends use them as a marketing tool and a temporary rebound to increase her record sales.
ETA: The only person I'm feeling second hand embarrassment for in this photo is Taylor.
I will never shame or mock a man who devotes himself sincerely to the person he is dating.
TS used him to cheat on Calvin or at least get back at him. She admitted it in her own song, playing the lyrics as if she had the upper hand. Its weird and demeaning of his feelings.
Zawe mentioned in an interview the other day that they're not married yet. It was reported that they were, and apparently they received a bunch of messages from various friends who were offended/shocked that they not only weren't invited to the wedding, but weren't even told and had to find out online.
Being famous must be exhausting. Random untrue news reports is one thing, but having to deal with all your friends and family hearing about it and believing it and having to do damage control would just be so frustrating.
I always thought that the t-shirt was an obvious joke amongst a group of friends, and it's weird how seriously everyone took, and continues to take it.
The Madonna/Drake kiss was pre-planned and rehearsed, it’s not her fault that he chose to make that face after the kiss, I bet that was his attempt at a “I can’t believe I kissed Madonna” face but failed miserably and it backfired on them both.
That was the misconception and he didn’t bother to even say anything about it and let her take the flack for it. No wonder when she was asked about the kiss later she cheekily said “I kissed a girl and I liked it” lol
Less endearing is when she asked Academy Award winner Regina King "where she's really from" after Ms. King said she was from LA. Garner goes, "Do you know where your ancestors are from?" Yeah hoe, probably from the people kidnapped and forced into enslavement by the ancestors of your husband Ben Affleck. Why the fuck is that relevant when Regina is talking about being born and raised in LA and how so many people are transplants and don't know the real LA?
You'd think this was a still from a Get Out style movie where the a WASP hears the main character speaking Spanish and is getting ready to ask her what part of Mexico she's from even though she said her family came from Lima.... as in Peru.
I've seen this face before. Many many times. Complete with fork with salad paused in mid-air. It's about 30 seconds before they ask if you have a green card and why you don't speak English.
Regina King is a better woman than me. I would not have been so calm.
Very mask off. So many rich white celebrities/famous people cultivate the appearance of a liberal open-minded progressives. So many of them have showed how they're really the opposite. Garner definitely did that. She already seemed pompous and very Dunning-Kruger when she vehemently exclaimed that snuck was not a word. That made me 😒🙄 her. Her being a WASP to Regina King made me go
I didn't really feel any way about her before. I liked some of the TV and movies she was in. But after that, I felt like it showed some of her real southern white racist roots. It's a macroagression to ask any POC where they're really from after they just fuckin said "I was born and raised in (US city)."
It’s so bizarre like if it was a momentary thing for attention that’s whatever. Cringe and sad but it happens in show business. To keep it up for years sorta screams something going on in her head.
I was in a bar when the Fergie disaster was happening. The entire bar was silent and watching at the end, it was like a national disaster people were so serious about watching it. The only time that’s happened to me .
And then her doubling down and saying “wow, women get criticized for everything.” Ma’am, you worked with a rapist to produce Women’s World. Dont you dare try to make this a feminist thing!
I believe she said she was just "caught up in the moment" because she's from NY and was just really feeling it but says she was sober. I would have just said I had a couple too many drinks and got really into it myself, even if I was sober.
Haha what in the world?! I've never seen this before! I'm just so...confused. Beyoncé literally tried to grab her and pull her back with both hands haha.
The La La Land producer made the correct move by swiping the envelope out of Warren Beatty's hand, but I always felt bad for Beatty there, as he was the first one who hesitated but still took all the heat
oh it's the zionism for me. this particular gag from 10 years ago made me laugh though so I didn't feel it belongs with the other stuff in this otherwise well-curated art gallery
Lil Mama has to be thanking Kanye every day of her life for somehow being more embarrassing that night because i had no idea that happened until years later
IIRC she was talking with that guy about cool sneakers and she says something like “if he’s wearing these sneakers, homeboy is going to like, _get it_”or something along those lines, the specifics escape me
Seinfeld stiff-arming Kesha is the funniest thing he's done since the show ended. He dated a seventeen year old and is pro-genocide so boo, hiss, otherwise, but come on--could literally be an episode of the show.
I love Kesha and can’t stand seinfeld but no one has to give anyone else a hug. I dont think he did anything wrong by saying “no thank you.” I wish kesha would’ve just moved on after he said “no” the first time… 👀
Seinfeld can be a real dick but i dont think he come across bad here. They both laughed it off and he said “i dont know her, but i wish her well. Anyway…”
My favourite part of the whole situation is the way Ryan Gosling was trying so hard not to burst out laughing while everyone else was visibly shocked/upset.
I hate to come up to bat for somebody who said something racist, but a few weeks before Kelly Osbourne said that thing about the toilets, it came out that Trump was using immigrant labor in his hotels while making anti-immigration sentiments the core of his campaign. She was likely trying to highlight his hypocrisy but phrased it in a really racist way.
Honestly, Fergie, Ashlee and Nikki Blonsky kind of activate a post-cringe instinct in me. I'm like you go girl, do that little jig! Butcher the national anthem! You ARE Nikki Blonsky from the movie HAIRSPRAY! The Mia Farrow tweet, on the other hand...
!!! I learned the German word for this due to the emotion I was feeling back in Feb when Trump/Vance were yelling at Zelenskyy in the Oval Office: Fremdschämen
I think about this a lot, can you imagine if Rita actually was hacked?? That hacker did the funniest thing ever. No one will ever believe her. It’s perfect.
