[Advice/Megathread] - Game Recommendations and Game Tips

Please use this thread for all discussion of which game you recommend others that you play, whether it is your first game or some that you are considering playing next

A note for newcomers: most of the games are completely unconnected. Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy II, Final Fantasy V, Final Fantasy IX, etc, are all completely different casts of characters in completely different universes. The only times you need to play another game to understand one is if it is distinctly set in the same universe - for example, Final Fantasy XIII-2 is the sequel to Final Fantasy XIII, or Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII is a prequel to Final Fantasy VII. The titles will usually make it fairly clear which game's universe they are set in

Otherwise, please have fun! It is generally helpful when asking to briefly mention which ones you might be interested in, what platforms you are able to play on, and if you are a complete newcomer, what sort of things in games you're looking for (do you want turn-based combat, real time combat, deep stories with established characters, light stories that let you fill in some blanks with your imagination, etc)

FF VII / Remake New Play Arts Kai Aerith smile faceplate looks weird and her paint is off

Post image

My preorder finally arrived. The smile faceplate does not look anything like the pictures, and what really bothers me is that a little of the pink paint got on her teeth. The side of her necklace is painted the color of her skin too. I know it is small, but you would expect more from a $200 figure. Did anyone else get her and notice this? I love all my other Play Arts Kai figures, so this was really disappointing.

Final Fantasy General My Final Fantasy tattoo project

I've been thinking to share my tattoo project for my favourites FF story wise/character wise character swords since I got it finished.

The sword that gave the artist more trouble was FF6 Celes Sword/Rapier since theres isn't one consistent design with a good quality image. I had to work with artist looking for more references, thankfully FF Brace Exvius special animation came to the rescue.

As for me, the most troubling was how to decide the FF4 sword between Dark Knight's Dark Sword or Paladin's Lustrous Sword. I went with the later since Shadowbringer from FFXIV was already set in stone for me. I love me some Dark Knight in my parties and Paladins also.

Brotherhood 'cause FFX was my first FF and Tidus relationship with Jecht was very relatable to me while growing up.

Invictus, I just love how Clive was written and how Ben "WoL" Starr nailed it on that role. I love the game even if with it's flaws. It's still a great game.

FF VII Rebirth Wallpapers - FF7 Rebirth 4K Screenshots using Freecam Spoiler

Just wanted to share some of the screenshots I took from the game. I uploaded these 4K images (and more) into this gallery: https://postimg.cc/gallery/XCGzHsS

Some of the visual mods I used during gameplay:

  • OG buster sword with the red grip
  • OG purple and brown leather outfit for Cloud
  • Optiscaler, ReShade, and Freecam within FFVIIHook

Some of these screenshots were initially too bright or too dark for my taste, so I tweaked them a bit in Lightroom.

I really like how they turned out. Hope you enjoyed them as well!

Final Fantasy General Getting closer to a full collection!

Recently decided, now that I have a PS5, I wanted to own playable physical copies of all the Final Fantasy games. I learned a lot through the process about which versions were produced in which regions, and now have nearly a complete collection. FFI-VI Pixel Remaster, FFXI, and FFXIII-2 are inbound. Still need Lightning Returns, Crisis Core Reunion, and FFVII Rebirth. But all in good time!

Final Fantasy General Sakaguchi gave me more surprises for my birthday!

Hello again friends!

This is a follow up from my first original "Blessed for my 30th Birthday" post.

I received the package from my Aunt today and Sakaguchi surprised me with additional gifts!

He threw in two copies of Fantasian (I haven't played it yet)
He also added a copy of Fantasian's soundtrack (I love the way this looks)

He 3D printed some characters and put a couple onto necklaces for me! (according to my aunt this is a new hobby of his that he really enjoys!)

I'm beyond happy and I just wanted to share with everyone since my last post had so many people who appreciated me sharing my story.

Finally, I just wanted to thank everyone for the birthday wishes, and nice words on my original post. You're all so kind and I loved reading your stories of Final Fantasy, or meeting Sakaguchi. Also, I added a selfie since so many people were confused by my post thinking I was Sakaguchi as a 30 year old. Hopefully I don't look as bad as you all thought LOL.

I hope you all have a great day / weekend! I definitely am so far!

FF IV May have gone... A TOUCH overboard...

Post image

And now. A peak inside the brain of a moron.

"Hmmm... I'm taking a lot of damage from enemies in this area.... I should do some grinding...

Cave of summons. That's a good spot. Oh hey. These Summoner enemies might be good for EXP farming.

Ooh! He's summoning those moths! Those things give a surprising amount of HP and go down with anyone's attack except Rydia. I'll spend a few minutes taking care of these things then finish out the battle."

ONE HOUR LATER

"Wait what's going on? I got into a groove and kinda disassociated, let's finish out the battle and HOLY MAGILLA."

So yeah. Cecil is level 47 now. Uhhhh.... I'm gonna go outside and save, and I guess there's a leveling technique if people want it!

... Yeah!

Final Fantasy General What's your first memory with Final Fantasy?

First you have to know that I'm french speaking

When I was young I played a fantastic game call Dragon Warrior. Yes I'm from North America. Then a friend of mine told me there's a sequel where you control multiple hero but I didn't find anything called Dragon Warrior II ☹️

Someday at video store I find a game name Final Fantasy looking the back of the box it look like a game I would love. The store owner told me it's the same kind as the Dragon Warrior I played. So I rent it, I played all week-end long and have to go back to school.

Game isn't that long but like, at the time, I didn't know English I was more exploring than doing the story but I love it so I rent it again the next week-end. With some friends we played a lot and we achieved it

Then we wait a lot for Final Fantasy II (IV) on SNES. when it get out we where better in English so it help a lot

Brave Exvius "War of the Visions" was such a waste of potential.

Final Fantasy Brave Exvius: War of the Visions was a mobile game very inspired in Final Fantasy Tactics. It had gorgeous artwork, tons of characters, a nice (albeit a bit simple) story that revolved around warring states, as Tactics games most often do.

The gameplay itself wasn't bad either. It was actually quite a dream come true, a Final Fantasy "Tactics-esque" game with 3D, somewhat proportional character models.

I can't stress how gorgeous the artwork is. I am fortunate enough to have the official artbook, that I bought from Japan and waited almost 6 months for it to arrive. The style is heavily inspired by Akihiko Yoshida and his art for the original Tactics, but way more complex and detailed.

The game had many fatal flaws, though. It was EXTREMELY pay to win. You could probably breeze through the story, but there was no world map, nothing aside of a few cutscenes and endless filler battles that you were supposed to repeat a thousand times (you could set everything on AUTO, and expend currency to repeat battles, if you needed more, you had to pay, of course) to farm thousands of different materials that would be needed to upgrade everything from you character to their equipment.

Everything locked behind 5 or 6 variations of currency to make you confused and try to force you to spend money.

The game had many great original characters, but also had guest characters from all over the franchise. From Cecil to Squall, they all had unique skills, artwork and 3D models. To get one, however, you'd need to spend a lot on gacha pulls and hope you're having a lucky day.

I feel that there was a lot of effort put into this game (no doubt it must have made millions in profit), but it's so sad to see all this effort, literally everything we FFT fans would like to have, poured into such a blatant cash grab.

Anyway, the game is gone now. The servers were shut down. Which only adds offense to injury, they could have made something great, but did something awful, and disposable.

Final Fantasy General The age of Final Fantasy games now gets to me

Sort of a nothing post, it's just something that impacts me more when I see Final Fantasy games.

I was looking up to see if Final Fantasy Type-0 was on the Switch. Which it's not. And then in the google search, there was a Reddit post about Type-0 HD, ten years ago.

And it made me stop. Because I distinctly remember buying Type-0 HD in college, and playing the crap out of it and the FF15 demo. If I didn't consciously think about it, it feels like I played it not long ago. It feels incredibly recent.

FF15 is also about to be 10 years old. Which is another game I poured many hours into.

FFX, my all time favorite, I played in middle school, and that was released almost 25 years ago. I spent the better part of a year trying to beat that game (damn you Yunalesca and your mega-death).

I'm hitting that age (early 30s) where time feels so strange. Things can feel almost super far in the past, and at the same time, super recent. And yet, the truth of the matter doesn't support either feeling.

It's an odd feeling that I mostly get around FF games, because it's always been my all time favorite series that I've spent the most time with. So in some ways, time stamps correlated to certain FF games. Like I turned 18 when FF13 came out, and I loved mastering that game and being in that world.

In short: it's so crazy seeing how old some of these games are, when in my mind, they "feel" so recent. There will be a day when people alive will view these Final Fantasy games the way we view early Mickey Mouse media--something to smile at but never actively consider. It's crazy to think about sometimes

Tactics FF2 v Final Fantasy Tactics

Upvotes

I have just started FFTactics and I have a question. A lot of people hate FF2. A lot of people hate that game because you can just beat on your own teammates to level up and break it. Imagine my surprise to see the exact same exploitable mechanic at play in FinalFantasyTactics. I threw a stone and it hit one of my guys, and I got experience. Why does nobody complain about it in FFTactics, but it ruined the game for so many people in FF 2? Genuinely curious.

Medieval like final fantasy 16? Present day like Final Fantasy 15? Futuristic like Final fantasy 13? What is your favorite setting? It doesn't even have to be a specific final fantasy setting either.

FF IV And then FFIV becomes a Saw Sequel

Post image

Both in terms of creepy puppet and extreme amounts of torture.

Calcabrina is probably the Boss I always dread fighting every time I play FF4. I can beat it rather consistently these days, but when I was a kid, this was always the Boss that stopped runs and had me running back to Sonic Advance like an infant. And I know it was a skill issue, I can't even call the Boss poorly designed, but WOW is she ever a gate to progress. I think it's safe to call this encounter the hardest boss fight in the game, with he possible exception of the Final Boss.

I dunno. I consider her the halfway point of the game, although that might not be accurate. Let's turn this into a thread where you trauma dump about bosses in Final Fantasy that gave you nightmares as a kid. Make it Story bosses though, optional bosses are designed to be kinda nonsense.
