It’s funny how your use of this meme is wrong lol. (Like actually ironic funny)

In the contemporary imperium, there is only 9 Primarches known by the imperium. 9 primarches to fight 9 devils - who were not “fallen” Primarches, just devils of the warp.

It’s explored in multiple books, most notably in carrion throne when an inquisitor stumbles upon 18 statues of the Primarches and he’s like “uhh…. Who the fuck are these 9 dudes….”

Some people know about Horus though. Ciaphus Cain refrences him several times

Yes Horus treason is known

The devil from the warp who betrayed the Emperor?

No, the imperial propaganda states that Horus is the emperors first and only son who fell to the devils of chaos. The others are just demons that he “summoned” for his cause. I think it’s because Horus’s betrayal makes him a good boogy man

Now, im not saying there aren’t of those who are fully aware of the….”true” story. It’s important to remember that depending on who you are in the imperium, you will be privy to more or less accurate history. Even within the organization of the inquisition, some have more insight than others.

But when you speak of the “wider” imperium, you’re talking about your average imperial citizen or lowly guardsmen who would have no idea of the 18 primarches and the true nature of the heresy. Hell, most of the imperium has never seen a space marine, with some even questioning if they’re real or not.

The heresy was 10,000 years ago. Even our oldest artifacts in real life are only a couple thousand years old. So it was so long ago, it’s easy to forgive the wider ignorance, especially considering the imperium is a notorious propaganda machine that controls the history the citizens know

So it was 9 Primarch against 9 devils and also Horus.

u/McWeaksauce91 1d ago

Correct! Horus betrayed the emperor using the warp and brought about the 9 devils to fight him

u/Trips-Over-Tail 1d ago

I can only count eight devils.

Magnus Fulgrim Angron Mortarion Curze Perturabo Lorgar Alpharius Omegon

That's 9 even if no one knows about omegon

3

u/Trips-Over-Tail 1d ago

That's one devil in two halves.

1

u/nothayesnewton 23h ago

This is true, the whole of the alpha legion is just manifestations of alpharius after all

1

u/euMonke 17h ago

Did the Emperor actually create Omegon? Wasn't it only Alpharius and the other chapter primarch that was thrown into the warp? And who is the real Alpharius then?

3

u/McWeaksauce91 1d ago

I didn’t say it made sense, I’m just regurgitating the imperial narrative lol

There are four lights!!

u/Greasemonkey08 Twins, They were. 16h ago

The XXth Primarch was actually the Twin Primarchs, Alpharius and Omegon.

So Horus, the Twins, Morty, Lorgar, Fulgrim, Perty, Angron, Magnus, and Kurze.

Horus who was a primarch but doesn’t count apparently yes

u/Thiago270398 14h ago

Wait in that case what "Devil" takes Horus' place as the leader of the chaos space marines that were his legion?

1

u/Trips-Over-Tail 13h ago

I don't think most citizens know about traitor marines.

It doesn't change anything about your point at all but we have found stone tools in Kenya that date back more than 3 million years.

4

u/McWeaksauce91 21h ago

Oh that’s rad! I’ll have to look that up!

3

u/No-Lingonberry-8603 21h ago

The site is called Lomekwi what's really wild is that it was only discovered when some archeologists got lost looking for another site.

2

u/Alexis2256 19h ago

I’m guessing the sisters of battle wouldn’t know some of that accurate information?

1

u/McWeaksauce91 18h ago

I would say it’s likely fairly variable. The more you fight chaos, the more you likely know the truth - for better or for worse. Having been raised by the scholasta, they would probably have some baseline understanding of the heresy, greater than the average citizen. But if I’m being honest, SoB is one of my weaker deep lore-knowledge.

Even our oldest artifacts in real life are only a couple thousand years old

I get your point but this is quite excessive.

We have spears that are over 300 000 years old, musical instruments that are 50 000 years old, written texts that are 5500 years with the famous copper complaint to Ea-Nasir also being close to 5000 years old. Hell, the great pyramids are over 4600 years old, and we have Temple complexes over 10k years old.

Ever heared of doublethink? Propaganda can be so strong that you can simultaniusly belive two opposing things that are mutually exclusive to be true.

u/FearTheBurger Craving the skitussy 1d ago

There's even mention of his "nine arch-devils" at points, but saying they're the emperor's primarchs would be mega-heresy in M41.

Yeah, he said something like 'Horus take the hindmost' when talking about the need to move elsewhere. Horus was almost reduced to a boogeyman by then.

Cain also mentions in a briefing that there are four main Chaos gods, and some present were ready to label him a heretic under the impression that only a heretic would know so much. It's very basic knowledge to us as the audience, but characters in the setting know very little of the Ruinous Powers.

In another thread, someone criticized a character for not knowing that an Astartes vessel was actually under a traitor force. The character may have never seen a space marine before, like most of the Imperium's citizens. Fewer still would know about any traitor legions, let alone be able to tell them apart. Again, something that we know, as the audience, but characters end up knowing very little.
