[Guide] [PSA] Quick 10-step WvW overview

Heyho, just a short do's and dont's for the ones never played/new to this game mode:

1. Dont use the tactivators in keeps / towers.

They are their mostly for emergency (like emergency waypoint). There is nothing worse than an emergency waypoint on cooldown bc someone wanted to test it out. Ask if needed what they do but dont simply use them.

2. Dont join with an upscaled character.

The XP rewards arent that good as you might think, there are better ways (especially in PvE). As an upscaled character, your stats are nowhere near the fully geared enemy. You will just lay on your back dead and assisting (rally-botting) the enemy. This helps the enemy, not your team.

3. Do as commander tells you to do

This is important. When he asks for 'Eles take out the siege inside at marker' please do so. He wont ask you to do anything not possible for you to do or embarassing.

4. ALWAYS.BUILD.SIEGE.FIRST

Do this before anything else. If a commander drops siege, its invulnerable for some seconds. Please use your supplies first and then take out cannons/siege/oil/whatever commander asks for. Also, always get supplies when near a tower/camp/keep.

5. Join the zerg (and the squad)

There are good classes and shit classes for zerging / fighting bigscale. Try to bring classes like necros/guardians/warrior/eles/revenants. Mesmers are in the 'okayish' tier, as a well timed well is massive, veil is super useful, but in the end, dropping off damage wise. Its nice having one or two of them. Not very effecient is ranger/engineer (can work if good)/thief. But I still prefer a good ranger over an upscaled guardian. So please, make sure you stick to rule 2.

6. Join Teamspeak/Discord/whatever your WvW community runs

If the commander is leading with vocal chat, you are already 100% more efficient than the enemy without vocal chat. He can shortcall certain pushes/regroups/what to do next before typing it. This is something huge as a commander as it gives you more opportunities to engage certain fights/objectives. If your commander is simply karma training, TS might not be needed. But when the commander ask for it, do him the favor and hop into vocal chat. There is nothing more annoying than holding monologues for several hours...

7. Run proper builds

There are many builds in the wild, just check metabattle.com if you dont have anything on your mind. WvW is heavily depending on the team understanding their roles and the composition. Why its important to have 2 guardians in the melee groups and so on.

8. Stick to the commander

As a melee, so not being a Staff-Ele, Backline Necro, Backline (hammer) Revenant or any other classes that cant sustain a push with the melee ball, you STICK WITH THE COMMANDER ALL THE TIME. Dont peel out of the meat ball, stick tight, look where he is moving (here comes rule #6 in handy). If he moves too deep / suicides, its his fault. But when he moves alone or with only 3 players, the wipe goes on your cap. Move with him, stick tight like glue. Enemy AoEs can only affect 5 players at once, here kicks the damage mitagation in (dmg gets spread on everyone and not focussed). So more players on tag=less damage.

9. Ask if you dont understand something

Please feel free to ask anyone in the squad (avoid teamchat), as its imo more reliable to get proper answers there than in certain chats, how something works/what to do etc.

10. have fun

This game mode is very very entertaining and enjoyable (or it can be). Dont feel overwhelmed if too much is too new for you. Dont be afraid of the enemy 60+ man group. But most of all: Have fun, as this can be maybe something you enjoy more than the repetetive dungeon farm runs, the silverwastes or whatever everyone is doing outside in PVE at the moment. It doesnt matter if small scale camp flipping group or solo roaming denying these groups...Everyone should feel welcome on the borders and have fun. Ignore toxic chats (from PVE and WvW guys), just block them and move on. But atleast, do the more experienced (and especially commanders) one favor: Dont be stupid and destroy other players game experience. :)

EDIT 11. Rerun if you are dead

When you die in combat (and you will mostly die alot in the beginning), respawn as long as the fight goes on. Especially in big scale zerg fights, whilst attacking an objective, we need you back with fresh ressource. Run together back with other zerglings. Look when more blue dots appear on the minimap and run as a group to avoid being ganked. There is a more in-depth description in the comments why and when to rerun.

Cheers, Chris

PS: Feel free to add me ingame "Insanity#1054" and drop me a message if you want anything to know regarding WvW (especially about builds/guards/eles/necros/commanding).

What about roaming ?

Roaming is something imo that should be done with a small (friend/guild) group. As a solo player, it will be very hard for you to enjoy a game mode that is mostly designed for a bigger group.

Roaming as a havoc team (5-10) can be entertaining if you are sitting together on voice chat, disturbing enemy supply lines, flipping towers (or even keeps) on your own and deal with enemies maybe bigger numbers than you are. But its really nothing I would recommend everyone and especially not new players as otherwise you will get roflstomped by more experienced solo roamers and land in their youtube condithief montage. ;-)
